year at Sanderson’s Field —and sense the exhilarationand enjoyment of whatthey’re doing.
But, it is only when youare there, high above theearth’s surface, that you cantruly understand.
That giddy sense of joyspoken of on the groundcan be felt in the chest onceairborne. It is a combinationof an adrenaline-filled rushin tandem with a deep feel-ing of serenity. It is also thejoyful change of perspec-tive, seeing somethingyou’ve seen hundreds oreven thousands of timesfrom an angle that gives thesubject new life.
Flying from Greenlandto Hampton Beach, onestops being a participant ofSeacoast life and insteadbecomes an observer. Thehustle and bustle of I-95, thelocal beaches filled with theclamoring masses and thenatural beauty of the saltmarshes can all be seen asone looks at life as thoughthrough a microscope.
The pilot, Craig Morse, who also happens to be theman who built the 587-pound plane we’re travel-ing in today, is more thanhappy to share in the joythat he’s been experiencingfor years. Even after 54flights during the week ofthe fly-in there’s still a bigsmile on his face while inthe air.
Craig and his wife,
Jeanne, have been sharingthat fun through their busi-ness Mainely Sport Planes.Since 1999 the two havebeen turning people on toultralights and sport planesand the fun they can pro-duce. The two sell the air-craft, build them and evenoffer instruction in theiroperation from their homein Patten, Maine.
“We basically try to helppeople get up in the air andstart flying,” he said.
Craig was inspired tostart the business after hisfirst time in a sport planewith a friend from Virginia.
“I had so much fun Ithought everyone needs achance to do it,” he said.
There is a certain
amount of faith that goeswith flying in a planeassembled from a kit. But,Craig built the Sky Rangerwe’re flying in — the 14thsuch plane he has construct-ed — and he’s piloting it soif it’s good enough forhim…
Comparing this ride tothat of a commercial airlineflight is like comparing aride on bus to that of amotorcycle.
In a smaller craft thesights and sounds envelopyou unlike the large airlinerwhere the only sensory
input is a tiny bag of honeyroasted peanuts as themind is washed over withthe brain-deadening droneof turbine engines.
There is also more to doon this little plane. The pas-senger actually can see thepilot and speak with himinstead of wondering ifsaid pilot even exists. Atone point mid-flight Craigreleases the controls, demonstrating the stabilityof the little plane.
“As you can see,” saidCraig in jest, “it’s very hard
to handle.”We lean forward in our
seats and the planes nosebegins to dip, lean back andthe plane climbs.
A demonstration of theSky Ranger’s power andmaneuverability has the lit-tle plane turned on its sidewith its passenger facingthe ground in a short-radius turn. There is thebriefest of moments wherethe heart leaps into thethroat as gravity becomesmore reality and less theo-ry. Fortunately for Craig, breakfast is not a big mealfor me.
While flying in sportplanes and ultralights maynot be for everyone, Jeannesaid they have taken peopleof all ages on the ride. Infact, their oldest passengeryet, a 93-year-old woman, was among the severalwannabe fliers that theMorse’s transported lastweek.
“She loved it,” saidJeanne. “She got out of theplane and said, ‘That wasfabulous.’”
As one would logicallyassume, all this freedomisn’t free. The Sky Rangerkit alone rings in at $15,295and that’s sans engine, instrumentation or pro-peller. Toss those into themix and you’re looking atthe mid-$30k range. Theplane we flew in todaytotals closer to $50,000.
While that may seempricey, Jeanne said theinvestment can last a life-time.
“Once you spend themoney and maintain whatyou have,” she says, “it’sgoing to last.”
