Tadej, it is obvious that you can’t ran out of challenges, even after the end of your professional cycling career. Managing Vila Triglav is more than a full time job and yet you took on triathlon. You started TK Pokljuka and dove head in organizing ETU TNatura Cross Triathlon race. Why triathlon, why Pokljuka?

I want to stay active, it is something that I enjoy, that it is in my nature. It helps me stay fit, healthy and positive, even with very limited free time due to running Vila Triglav. Triathlon? Triathlon was one of the ways, ideas on how to promote Vila Triglav as a training destination. Talking with my friend who now runs our club, one thing lead to another and eventually we got into contact with manager of TNatura, Mr. Sandro Salerno.I know Pokljuka and Bohinj well, so when mapping the course I started thinking that this is something I would like to do, compete in. I have always loved riding MTB, so this was a perfect challenge.

This is the first race your club is organizing, the first triathlon race of this format in Bohinj. What is the hardest part?

There are unlimited number of issues we are dealing with, as soon as you solve one, another shows up. It kind of reminds me of certain times in my career, pushing to the max on every race, using all of my resources, knowledge, energy to be the best I could be. The hardest thing is convincing partners and sponsors that we are serious and that this race is here to stay and can only develop as a great opportunity for tourism of the whole region. Yes, it is our first time, but we aim to put together the best race possible, even when lacking support.

There were some major changes in location and the format of the race in the past week. What are the main reasons?

The main two reasons are connected to finances and logistics. The new course is easier to »control«, there is just one transition area, less people are needed for security and medical staff and logically that means less costs. I think it is a smart decision, the course is equally fantastic, easier for fans to see their athletes and cheer for them. As mentioned, the main primary goal of this race was to promote Pokljuka and Vila Triglav, but we believe that this can still be done in the next years (maybe with TNatura MTB race or trail run). For this year, changing the course was the only way. The only other option was cancelling the race.

interview with tadej valjavec

Tadej Valjavec is an ex-Slovenian professional road bicycle racer, who won »Baby Giro d’Italia« in 1999. He was well-known as a good climber due to his rides on mountain stages in the Giro d’Italia. He has consistently performed well in the Grand Tours, with three top ten and four further top twenty finishes. He retired in 2013 and is currently running a tourist mountain chalet in Pokljuka, offering his guests active vacations, biking program and tours. As one of the founders of Triathlon club Pokljuka he is largely responsible of bringing TNatura Cross Triathlon Series to Slovenia. We had a chance to talk to him about different challenges in competing and organizing TNatura Slovenia race.

Page 10: TNatura Slovenia 2014 ETU Cross Triathlon Race Manual

In spite all of this issues it is clear that Bohinj and Pokljuka have a lot to offer to endurance athletes, be that runners, cyclists, triathletes. Not only as a race venue but also as a perfect training destination, seminars, camps.

I agree, Bohinj and Pokljuka are perfect destinations, completing each other. Even historically, Pokljuka »developed« as another source for need of farmers from the valley. On Pokljuka we can offer ideal conditions for altitude training, in Vila Triglav we even have a special system of high altitude rooms that are an invaluable tool for endurance athletes, great climatic conditions with perfect infrastructure at biathlon center … And the most beautiful lake in the region, lake Bohinj. Add to that knowledge, experience, kindness of the local people, great food and wine, it really makes a one of a kind experience.

You tackled your first triathlon in May this year at TNatura Cross EU Championship in Sardinia. Even with limited training time, no experience in multi-sport race and a bad crash on the bike you managed to finish as 14th (with a far best bike split, even with the crash)! A really impressive start. Is triathlon your new passion?

From the result point of view, I expected more from myself even with limited training and experience. But looking back on the race now I can honestly say that I did my best in given circumstances. I am sure that with maybe more experience in swimming the podium was realistically in my reach. Cross triathlon is a fantastic sport but my lack of time to train and prepare is the main factor that I did not compete more this year. I don’t have it in me to do things »half way«, especially when I know I can be with the best when I have the time to prepare.

Are you planning to compete at TNatura Slovenija? It is your home race.

I would love to compete, home race, a great course, lots of Slovenian fans. On the other hand, LOC is already short on staff, month of Avgust is the peak of tourist season at Vila Triglav, which automatically means no training time. I think I will decide just prior to the race and do what is best for the event, for the race.

The last race of the TNatura Circuit will be held in Bohinj, on a beautiful lake in Triglav National Park. After analysing the first version of the MTB and run course LOC decided to move both back to the lake for a more traditional format of triathlon, with only one transition zone and multiple laps on the bike and the run.

The main goal is to offer a race that is not logistically complicated for athletes, but still offers a challenging and spectacular course, easy accessible for supporters and fans to cheer for their triathletes! The average air temperature in September is 16,5°C and water about 22°C. But due to amount of rain (and bad weather) we are getting lately there is a high possibility that neopren suits will be allowed.

The distances of TNatura Slovenia are as follows:

SWIM: 1,5km (two laps of 750m)

BIKE: 22km (4 laps of 5,5km, with more than 500m of climbing)

RUN: 7,2km (6 laps of 1,2km)

The course offers a good challenge for elite athletes, and on the other hand is suitable for every AGR athlete to test their fitness levels!

swim: 2 laps of 750m – 1,5km TOTALThe race starts from the beach of Lake Bohinj. Slovenia’s largest lake is a picture of peace and serenity. With its crystal clear water, brooding and mystical feels are encouraged by the steep mountain faces that rise out of the of the lake on the northern side, with mountain peaks also dominating the background to the west and south.

bike:

The bike course is 4 laps 5,5km long course with a single steep climb. It is an attractive course on mostly gravel roads, combining riding on the coast of Lake Bohinj, through the small village called Stara Fužina and over the historically known Devil’s bridge.

run:

The run lap is short but dynamic! It will take you near the coast of Lake Bohinj, on gravel single path over a short hill and back to the transition area. There are 6 laps to complete, but such a format allows lots of loud fan support!

The first settlements date back to the time of Iron Age (7th century) due to rich deposits of iron ore. Even the first climb to Mount Triglav was sponsored hoping to find new ore deposits. Some of the initial mining and charcoal colonies present today’s alpine meadows. Alpine Dairy Farming (and cheese-making) represent the foundation of Bohinj agriculture in 13th century. The construction of the Bohinj Railway in 1906 opened wide doors for the development of Bohinj tourism.

Peaceful lakes and booming waterfalls, deep gorges and silent pools, timid animals and luxurious alpine flowers, impressive creations of nature and majestic natural phenomena ... Bohinj is an oasis on the sunny side of the Alps. Explore by yourself or, even better, with an experienced guide. But always retain a healthy respect for the fragile natural balance.

You can always find something to do in Bohinj. We invite you to attend International Wild Flowers Festival in Spring (May and June), experience bustling life in Summer with music festivals and different events, presenting old Bohinj traditions. In Autumn life from alpine pastures renders back into the valley, but months are ideal for hiking. HIking and Fly Fishing Festival welcome you in September in October. Moreover, smaller ski resorts, mountain ski resort Vogel and cross-country trails, spread around the valley, classify Bohinj also a popular winter destination.

Welcome anytime!

The only Slovenian national park – Triglav National Park abounds in clean waters, diverse landscape and exceptional flora and fauna. The preserved cultural heritage and nurtured culturallandscape are the result of co-natural living of manand nature. More than two thirds of the Bohinj area lies within Triglav National Park.

Slovenia lies in the heart of Europe, where the Alps meet the Mediterranean and the Pannonian Plain meets the Karst. This small green country measures 20,273 km2 in area.

The collision of four major European geographical units has created a very invigorating landscape, much of it thickly forested. More than a third of the country’s area is protected.

The most mountainous region is the north, where the Alps begin. The Julian Alps and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps have many stunning sharp peaks. The peaks of the Karavanke, the mountains bordering Austria, are more gentle.

Much of the east of the country between two biggest cities, Ljubljana and Maribor is uplands. There are gentler hills in the south-east and east, where the vine flourishes, while plains and basins populate the areas between the hills. The capital city Ljubljana and its region lies in the largest basin.

Slovenia also has a large plains area, as the east of the country is part of the Pannonian Plain. Not only is the land surface very invigorating, there are also wonders underground: some of the country’s 9,000 karstic caves are among the most beautiful in the world, Postojna and Škocjan Caves on south-east are the most popular.

Slovenia is home to 2 million sincere, hospitable people of great diligence. Slovenians constantly want to prove themselves, that is why Slovenia has an exceptional number of top athletes, and a wealth of cultural creativity.

Slovenia is a member of European Union since 1st May 2004 and has excepted European currency Euro as national currency on 1st January 2007.
