A survey conducted by JCI Irelandshows that 16% of Irish people be-lieve that volunteering is a more rep-resentative act of active citizenship asopposed to joining a political party, where 0% voted in favour. The sur-vey was conducted to mark the an-nouncement of JCI Ireland’s ActiveCitizenship Week on October 3-8th2010.
The JCI survey revealed the surpris-ing fact that politics is not consideredpart of community involvement, withthe majority of people (19%) believ-ing planting flowers in a public areaas a major act of citizenship. Howev-er, 3% would see writing a letter to alocal politician as being proactive intheir community. JCI Ireland encour-ages as many people as possible to dosomething to activate their citizen-ship during the week of October 3rdto 8th every year. The websitewww.fityways.com has a list of waysto pledge to be an active citizen.
Mark Kelly, JCI Ireland President, feels this survey is a reflection of themind set of the nation. "I was sur-prised to see that not one person
would consider joining a politicalparty. I feel that Irish people feel letdown by our political system thoughit is important to note that as IrishActive Citizens we can not expectgovernment to do everything for us.Our active citizenship week will en-courage people to become involvedin their local communities, make adifference and they will grow as citi-zens in the process"
10% of those surveyed consideredjoining a local JCI branch to be activecitizenship. JCI’s 50 ways to ActiveCitizenship is a great way to start be-ing a more active citizen today. Thepurpose of the 50 Ways to ActiveCitizenship is to give the members ofthe Irish community fifty easy waysin which they can become more ac-tive citizens and put the magic backinto our communities.
JCI Ireland is part of Junior ChamberInternational, the largest personal andleadership development organisationfor young people in the world.

2010 sees more volunteersand fewer politicians!JCI Ireland survey shows that Irish people believeactive citizenship starts with volunteering

A smile cost nothing, but givesmuch. It enriches those who receive, with-out making poorer those who give.It takes but a moment, but the mem-ory of it sometimes lasts forever.None is so rich or mighty that he canget along without it, and none is sopoor but that he can be made rich byit.A smile creates happiness in thehome, fosters good will in business, and is the countersign of friendship.
It brings rest to the weary, cheer tothe discouraged, sunshine to the sad,and is nature's best antidote for trou-ble.Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is some-thing that is of no value to anyoneuntil it is given away. Some people are too tired to giveyou a smile.Give them one of yours, as noneneeds a smile so much as he whohas no more to give." - Unknown Author

Grassland Management.
Most grassland was suffering fromdrought until today (Monday 28th
June) when the first rain for overthree weeks fell. If you had nitrogenapplied, to which grass had not re-sponded, there should be no need toapply further nitrogen for the nextgrazing. However if nitrogen had notbeen applied you should now applyas follows:-Overall farm stocking rate Nitrogen inrate July
0.95-1.0 acres/L.U. 28 units per acre
1.00-1.12 acres/L.U. 17 units per acre
1.18+ acres/L.U. 14 units per acre
Apply all remaining slurry to landaccording as it becomes available.Delay any addition chemical Nitro-gen fertiliser for approximately 5 -7days after slurry.
Weed control in grassland can giveup to an extra 1t/ac Dry matter grassyield – worth about €200. There is awide range of products all with dif-fering metits. Eagle (not for use indry weather), Asulox and Prospectare good for dock control and willnot damage clover. CMPP is cheaper, will burn back docks and cover arange of other weeds. Bandock, Kil-dock, Dockstar, Pastor, Foundation,Hygrass and Hiload Mircam cover awide range of weeds but will alldamage clover. Metsulfuron methylis a relatively new product for thecontrol of a range of grasslandweeds. Starane 2 and various formu-lations are now being used to controldandelions, nettles and establisheddocks. Do not graze fields that con-tain ragworth until 3 – 4 weeks afterspraying.
Soft rush is present in many wetterfields with poor drainage. It may becontrolled now with the applicationof MCPA and 2,4 D. Control of rushis obviously important for grass pro-duction but is also important in lessintensively grazed land to ensure thatthe land continues to be classified for
Single Farm payment as forage areaand not as land abandonment
Dairying
Grass covers determine the amountof grass per m2 or per ha. Howeverin order to make full use of this infor-mation and budget grass properlyyou need to determine grass demandand paddock areas.
Grass demandCow type/ size kg DM/Cow
Large Holstein (600kg) 19 – 20
High EBI Holstein Herd (550kg) 17 – 18
Jersey Crossbred herd (450 – 500 kg) 16 – 17
Paddock areas.
Paddock areas should be determinedbut accurate measurement. There arenumber of specialist companies thatwill do that for you using GPS.
Farm Cover.
The DM (dry matter )/ha for eachpaddock multiplied by the paddockareas added together will the totalfarm cover.
The average farm cover is the totalcover divided by the total area.
Target Pre Grazing Cover.
The target pre grazing cover is dert-ermined by multiplying the follow-ing:-
Stocking rate (cows/ha)
Allowance (kg DM/cow/day)
Rotation length (days)
and add the residual (what will beleft in the paddock after grazing)
Cereals.
Spraying for disease is completed onmost crops. The main task now is towalk crops and to hand rogue wildoats. If there are areas where thereare too many wild oat plants forrouging those areas should bemapped so as you will know wherespecific wild oat herbicides will beneeded for next year. You should al-so monitor lands for scotch and iden-
tify fields where preharvestglyphosate should be used. Areaswith other grass weeds should also beidentified and mapped.
Farm Safety.
School holidays have now com-menced and with that comes an in-creased need for vigilance.Farmyards are very attractive to chil-dren, but are not a playground.
Replace slat/manhole covers afteragitating/removing slurry. Do notallow tyres to stand so that there is arisk of falling over. Alltools/equipment/machinery must bein good order when in use and leftsafe after use.
Farm inspections.
It is important to take some time outeach week to check that everything isas it should be. Farm inspections byboth the Department of Agricultureand the Local Authorities focus ongood farm management. Farms mustbe kept stockproof so if you had towiden gaps recently for silage equip-ment now is the time to go back andresecure the fencing.
Make sure that silage effluent contin-ues to be directed to proper storagefacilities and that all storage facilitiesare leak proof. Any level of contami-nation near a storage facility indi-cates a problem which must beaddressed. Now is also a good timeto repair/replace chutes and down-pipes, where necessary, as it is a re-quirement under the nitrateregulations to ensure separation ofclean a dirty water.

What started out as 2 or 3 food blog-gers coming to Oldfarm in Redwood,Lorrha, Co. Tipperary for tea and achat, turned into a food fest of 9sitting down to afternoon tea!
It all began when 2 bloggers - There-sa Storey of The Green Apron andMargaret O’Farrell of A Year In Red-wood - missed out on attending aBord Bia event in May. CarolineHennessy of Bibliocook took the ini-tiative and thought she would organ-ise a foodies group meeting outsidethe Pale! So now there were three!
Next decision was where to meet?Margaret offered to host the event atOldfarm, so it was all systems go.
Wednesday, 16th June in glorioussunshine, 9 people - who had nevermet before - gathered to talk tea, coffee, milk and food. And that isliterally what was discussed - real tea, real coffee, pasteurised or unpasteur-
ised milk and growing, sourcing andeating good food.
Naturally, as Oldfarm is mainlyabout Pork and Bacon, there wassome talk about pigs and of course, avisit to meet them all. Ralph Haslamof Mossfield Cheese joined us forpart of the afternoon, as it is the wheyfrom his farm that is fed to the pigs,as well as locally grown barley andvegetables. Oldfarm sell their pork
and bacon via a box scheme at €10per kg. delivered nationwide to yourdoor (Tel: 086 8100 125)
Visiting pigs is hungry work, so itwas now time to sit down to after-noon tea. And what a spread thatwas! There was Battley Cake fromThe Green Apron, as well as Choco-late Raspberry Jam! Bibliocook andDinner Du Jour had brought two dif-ferent types of chocolate cookies.
The piece de resis-tance was theChocolate Tortebrought along bySome Say Cocoa...wow! There wasfresh strawberriesand cherries fromthe garden. Ralphhad brought someof his wonderfulcheese along. Andthere was evensome old-fash-ioned fried bread -
home-made soda bread fried in Old-farm lard! The table was suitablygroaning with all the food!
The afternoon finished with plans foreveryone to try to meet up again forthe Kilkenny Food Trail.
Next event at Oldfarm is a BBQCourse on Saturday, 3rd July, withChef John Whelan, formerly of Qua-glino in London. A full day workinghands-on with a master chef. Learnabout the different styles of bbq, when to use rubs versus marinades, what accompaniments work best. This day long course from 10 - 6 pm.includes lunch and dinner and costs€125 per person. PrayersPrayer to St. AnthonyO holy St Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for Hiscreatures made you worthy when onearth to possess miraculous powers.Miracles waited on your word, whichyou were ever ready to speak for thosein trouble or anxiety. Encouraged bythis thought, I implore you to obtainfor me (Here, mention your request). The answer to my prayer may requirea miracle; even so, you are the Saint ofMiracles. (Continued from previous issue)Self-care, safety, healing and forgiveness, following leaving an abusive relationship.
In the last article I looked at steps that shouldbe considered when a victim decides to leavean abusive relationship. But the question thenarises, what to do to survive, to ultimatelygrow, to heal and hopefully to forgive, whenthe survivor has left the relationship.
It is a fundamental principle that people strivefor their own good. It is equally true thatpeople have within themselves everythingthey need to be happy. We have seen howabuse scars the person, but the above twoprinciples imply that people have the capacityto recover from abuse (trauma) and findhappiness. Some survivors of abuse sufferfrom Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD),and recovery from this may require specialisttherapy. When a person decides to leave anabusive relationship they are taking steps toprotect themselves from boundary violationsand taking back their power.
That is a most important step, but theobstacles are many, and some people neverleave an abusive environment. That is theirdecision. For others leaving an abusiveenvironment offers the opportunity ofgrowth. Usually the survivors use their ownstrengths and abilities, but some reach out forhelp from others.
Psychologists have outlined what they callpositive coping strategies that help to reduceanxiety and make matters better for thesurvivor of abuse not only on a short termbasis but for the long term future. The firstone is to use natural supports such as friendsand family in whatever way the survivor feelsfit. Secondly, it is always advisable to learn
about abuse and how traumatic it can be, andwhat it does to the person. The books that Ihave recommended at the beginning of thisseries of articles are very useful andeducational.
One of the best ways to recover from abuse isto talk to other survivors. This is not alwayseasy since victims tend to conceal abuse, butit helps the survivor to feel less alone orperhaps to receive practical help, especially ifthe survivor suffers from PTSD. There aremany relaxation techniques that are useful. These include breathing exercises, meditation, stretching, yoga, prayer, listeningto quiet music, and walking in a rural area. Itis necessary to manage these, however, because when a survivor is relaxed, theintrusive thoughts of the trauma (abuse) mayincrease. Apart from relaxation, being activeis also an important way of dealing with theafter effects of trauma. These can be classedas positive distracting activities. An exerciseprogramme (having discussed it with adoctor) is also advisable. This would includewalking, swimming, jogging, and perhapsgym activity.
