Dear Tidal Industry Colleague,
Welcome to the 4th International Tidal Energy Summit and Awards 2010!This year has witnessed a plethora of activity and heralds a significant turning point for the tidal energy sector. We’ve seen the first recipients from the Marine Renewables Proving Fund be rewarded over £10mn.
In addition to this Carbon Trust funding, the Technology Strategy Board, the Scottish Saltire Prize and also EC funding all hold promise… but only for those companies right at the forefront. What about the rest?
The announcements from the Crown Estate on the Scottish waters leasing agreements marks a new dawn for the tidal energy industry as commercial scale projects are moving into action for serious development. With 700MW of installed capacity on the table by 2020, the industry has a great deal to accomplish in the next decade if tidal energy is going to be a viable resource.
The next 5 years are critical for device developers to get their devices in the water and move towards pre-commercial prototypes that will prove the technical reliability and economic viability of their devices and the tidal energy sector.
But there are significant challenges to overcome if the industry is going to develop successful tidal arrays in some of the harshest engineering and operating conditions known to man. In addition, the need to establish effective tidal projects that comply with existing marine users and demonstrate benign impacts on the marine environment is not going to be an easy task to deliver.
With limited government grants and funding available, now is the time for new industry-wide “investment pull mechanisms” to encourage innovative financing, whilst helping to build infrastructure and manufacturing supply chain partnerships.
ITES 2010 – The Most Important Event in the Tidal Energy Calendar!Based on the developments the industry have witnessed this year, and the significant challenges it has to overcome, Tidal Today are thrilled to present the 4th International Tidal Energy Summit to you – with the very first Global Tidal Today Awards ceremony.
