WE WELCOME OUR GUEST PREACHER TODAY, THE REVEREND STAN FORNEA,

Collect
Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always
those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without
you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33
The king, David, ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying,
"Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And
all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the
commanders concerning Absalom. So the army went out into
the field against Israel; and the battle was fought in the forest
of Ephraim. The men of Israel were defeated there by the
servants of David, and the slaughter there was great on that
day, twenty thousand men. The battle spread over the face of
all the country; and the forest claimed more victims that day
than the sword. Absalom happened to meet the servants of
David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went
under the thick branches of a great oak. His head caught fast in
the oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth,
while the mule that was under him went on. And ten young
men, Joab's armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck
him, and killed him. Then the Cushite came; and the Cushite
3
said, "Good tidings for my lord the king! For the LORD has
vindicated you this day, delivering you from the power of all
who rose up against you." The king said to the Cushite, "Is it
well with the young man Absalom?" The Cushite answered,
"May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up to
do you harm, be like that young man." The king was deeply
moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept;
and as he went, he said, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son
Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my
son, my son!"
Psalm 34:1-8
1 I will bless the LORD at all times;
his praise shall ever be in my mouth.
2 I will glory in the LORD;
let the humble hear and rejoice.
3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD;
let us exalt his Name together.
4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me
and delivered me out of all my terror.
5 Look upon him and be radiant,
and let not your faces be ashamed.
6 I called in my affliction and the LORD heard me
and saved me from all my troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encompasses those who fear him,
and he will deliver them.
8 Taste and see that the LORD is good;
happy are they who trust in him!
Ephesians 4:25-5:2
Putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our
neighbors, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do
not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not
make room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather
let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to
4
have something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come
out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as
there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who
hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you
were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. Put away
from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and
slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another,
tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has
forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved
children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself
up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
John 6:35, 41-51
Jesus said to the people, "I am the bread of life. Whoever
comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me
will never be thirsty. Then the Jews began to complain about
him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from
heaven." They were saying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of
Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now
say, `I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus answered them,
"Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me
unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that
person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, `And
they shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and
learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen
the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the
Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life.
I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the
wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down
from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the
living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this
bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life
of the world is my flesh."

All are welcome to receive Holy Communion with us. Our tradition is to
receive both bread and wine, sharing in the common cup. Please assist the
chalice bearer by guiding the cup to your lips. You may also intinct by
dipping the wafer into the chalice. You may wish to receive the bread
only. Receiving the bread only is a valid and acceptable way to share in
Holy Communion. After consuming the wafer, simply cross your arms
over your chest to indicate that you do not wish to receive the wine.
Gluten-free wafers are available on request from the communion minister.
If you are feeling sick, please refrain from receiving the wine and be
mindful of those near you when passing the peace or shaking hands as
you enter and exit the church.

WE’RE ALL HERE TOGETHER
St. John’s has several members who have lived in this area all their lives.
But for most of us, we are transplants from other communities. We
moved to the DC area to go to college, to get a job, or to be with a
special friend. Perhaps we moved here because the military assigned us
to this area, or because of an election or Presidential appointment. We
travel back to our hometowns for reunions and to see old friends and
relatives. We have all found a church home at St. John’s! We may not
know the name of the person sitting next to us in the pew on Sunday, but
we do know that he or she has also found a home at St. John’s. Can you
play a role in insuring that other people can also be blessed by St. John’s
ministry?

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY OF SUMMER
SUNDAY SCHOOL
The last class of the Summer Sunday School will meet today, August 9, in a
one-room class for grades pre-K through five. The lessons are based on the Holy
Moly curriculum, which uses a short video and innovative activities to tell great
stories from the New Testament and help students understand how the Bible
might have meaning in their lives. The class starts at 10:30 a.m. on the second
floor of the Parish House. All students will come in to church to join their
families for Communion. Church School classes for the regular program year
begin September 20. For more information contact the Rev. Sarah Taylor
Miller at [email protected].
SEPTEMBER 9 WITH THE LATROBE YOUNG ADULT FELLOWSHIP
Wednesday, September 9, 7:00 p.m.
The Latrobe Fellowship for Young Adults at St. John's Church is an active and
engaged group of adults, both singles and couples, primarily in their 20s and
30s. We will meet on Wednesday, September 9, at 7:00 p.m. for a service of the
Holy Eucharist followed by a wine tasting led by the Rector. The suggested
donation for the event is $10. Please contact the Rev. Sarah Miller to RSVP
or if you have questions at [email protected] or at 202-347-8766
ext. 304.
PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT
Friday, September 11, 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Enjoy free time with your significant other while your children (infants through
age 10) are cared for at St. John’s. We will provide child care, a light supper,
and entertainment for your children while you spend time with each other. Drop
your children off in the Parish House nursery and take advantage of the
restaurants within walking distance. All we ask is that you sign up by noon on
Wednesday, September 9 so that we will have an adequate number of
attendants and that you pick up your children before 9:00 p.m. when the
doors will be locked. Sign up with Evangeline Gravina in the Parish Office
at [email protected] or at 202-347-8766, ext. 301.
THE NEXT DATES FOR BAPTISM and required pre-baptismal classes with
the clergy are as follows:
• September 13, 9:00 a.m.; pre-baptismal class, Thursday,
September 10, 6:45 p.m.

If you are interested in having a child baptized, or in baptism for yourself,
please contact Kaye Edwards by e-mail at [email protected].
Please note that the parents or grandparents of children being baptized must be
active, pledging members of St. John’s. Adults interested in baptism for
20
themselves must attend the Rector’s Adult Inquirers’ Class and be active,
pledging participants in the life of the parish.
ST. JOHN’S BOOK GROUP
Thursday, September 17, 6:45 p.m.
The September book is The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard
Flanagan. Our October book is The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson.
The meeting will be October 15 at 6:45 p.m. in the parlor. If you like to read and
meet with others who like to read and talk about books, the book club is for you.
For questions or more information, please contact Leila Taaffe at
ST. JOHN’S BICENTENNIAL – SAVE THE DATE!
Sunday, September 27
St. John’s will celebrate its Bicentennial starting this fall. We will begin our
celebration with special services on Sunday morning, September 27. The Rt.
Rev. Marianne Edgar Budde, Bishop of the Diocese of Washington, will be with
us on that date. Please mark and save the date on your calendar. The
Bicentennial celebration will span the program year, ending in May 2016. Plans
so far include a distinguished-preacher series; a number of special Bicentennial-
themed Adult Forums looking at both our past and our future; and several pieces
of music commissioned specifically for our 200th anniversary. Stay tuned for
more information over the coming months.
THE RECTOR’S FALL ADULT INQUIRERS’ CLASS
Saturdays, November 7 and November 14
If you would like to be baptized, confirmed, or received into membership in the
Episcopal Church at St. John’s, please join the Rector’s Fall Adult Inquirers’
Class. Led by the Rector, the class (a two-day session) will meet on Saturdays,
November 7 and November 14, from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Parish
House. Anyone interested in learning more about our Christian faith and life,
the Episcopal tradition, and the ministry of St. John’s Church, is encouraged to
attend. For more information or to register, please contact Kaye Edwards,
at 202-347-8766, ext. 317 or by e-mail at kaye.edwards@stjohns-
dc.org. Those who participate in this class, or have completed another
inquirers’ class session, may attend a Service of Confirmation, Reception, and
Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows at the Washington National Cathedral in
2016.
LATEST UPDATE ON RENOVATION OF STAINED-GLASS
WINDOWS THIS SUMMER
Our stained-glass window contractor has returned the first two windows to be
renovated this summer. The Garden of Gethsemane (over the entrance to the
organ console chamber) and the Transfiguration (over the president’s entrance)
are back in place. The Pinkney semi-lune window in the AFL side of the
21
balcony has been removed and should be back before September. The total cost
of the renovations and new protective outside covers this year is $49,000.
TWO EASY WAYS TO HELP OTHERS
• The empty casserole pans in the Parish House are waiting to be filled with food
for our partnership with So Others Might Eat (S.O.M.E.). St. John’s is
committed to sending food once a month to S.O.M.E. to be served in a meal
program for homeless and low-income persons in D.C. Participation is easy
and flexible! Pick up an empty casserole pan in the Parish House, fill it with a
casserole, and drop it off in the freezer near the dining room soda machine. A
parishioner picks up all the casseroles once a month and drops them off at the
meal site.
• When you travel, bring back unopened toiletry items for homeless
shelters. Place them in the basket in the connector between the Church and the
Parish House.
JOIN THE SUMMER CHOIR! All singers, whether experienced or not-so-experienced, are invited to sing in the
choir on Sunday mornings at St. John's, from Sunday, June 21 through Labor
Day Weekend. Members of both the St. John's Choir and the Parish Choir will
be on hand to lend their voices as well, and you may sing for one Sunday or all
Sundays. The rehearsal begins at 9:30 a.m. sharp each Sunday morning in the
church, to prepare for the 10:30 a.m. service. Please be in touch with Ben
Hutto at [email protected] or Michael Lodico at
[email protected] if you are interested in singing in the
Summer Choir or talking about the program. There is a straightforward voice
trial for admission, but the main qualification is your interest in serving St.
John’s in its music program.
RECEIVE THE ST. JOHN’S WEEKLY LEAFLET AND THE
MONTHLY WORD BY E-MAIL
To improve our stewardship of the environment and reduce costs, we only e-
mail the weekly Leaflet and The WORD, our monthly newsletter, using Constant
Contact, which gives members an easy way to update e-mail information. To
insure that you continue to get the latest information about Sunday services and
other ministries at St. John’s or if you have questions or concerns, please
contact Serina Freeman at [email protected] or at 202-347-
8766 ext. 300.
PASTORAL CARE OPPORTUNITIES
MINISTERING TO THE SICK AND THOSE IN CRISIS is an important
part of the ministry of St. John’s Church. If you know of a parishioner who is in
the hospital, is ill, or has other pastoral needs, please notify the church
office. You may also fill out a Request for Intercessory Prayer card, located in
the narthex, and leave it with an usher or greeter, put it in the offering plate, or
22
mail it in. Please don’t assume that someone else will notify us. We would
rather hear from several people than not know when a member of our
congregation needs a clergy visit. Also, let us know of those who may not need
a visit but should be on our prayer or flower list.
FLOWER DELIVERIES
Help brighten the day of parishioners who can’t be with us by taking them
flowers, located in the side chapel. A card is attached to each vase with contact
information. Thank you for checking to see if a delivery address is convenient
for you.
Flowers need to be delivered on Irving St NW, Washington, DC; Penn.
Ave., NW, Washington DC; Reservoir Road, NW, Washington, DC.
OUR PRAYERS are requested for the special needs and concerns of this
congregation, especially:
Those who are sick or recovering:
From our parish: Penni Alison, Margo Arnold, Cay Buser, Isobel Clark,
Nelson Crouch, Ruth Harwood, Ben Hutto, Jemera Rone, and David Taylor.

O’Brien, and Lisa Wood.

via email as soon as you can with corrections, additions, and updates on
status.

IF YOU ARE VISITING
a warm welcome to St. John’s.
We are delighted to have you worship with us. Please let us know who
you are and how we can best serve you by filling out a “Welcome”
card and leaving it in the offering plate or with an usher or greeter, and
joining us for the coffee hour following the service.
We welcome families with young children at our worship services.
Children’s Worship Bulletins are available from the ushers as you
enter the nave. For parishioners and visitors alike, nursery care for
children under age three is provided on Sunday from 9:15 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. The nursery is located next to the elevator on the lower
level of the Parish House. Take the elevator or stairs to the basement.
We also offer Summer Church School (during the 10:30 a.m.
service through August 9) for children ages three through ten.
All persons, including children, are invited to take part in the Holy
Eucharist. Parents may decide if their children receive the bread
and/or wine. Children may instead signal their desire to be blessed by
the priest at the altar by crossing their arms across their chest.
Follow us on Instagram at @stjohnslafayettesquare. See photos

Sunday services, and more. Relive the moment or experience it for the
first time through the touch of a button on your smartphone. Help St.
John’s capture each moment by submitting your photos from events,
worship services, trips, and volunteer efforts. For more information,
