The Swedish delegation presents:
LundaMaTs
- an integrated effort of creating a sustainable environmentally friendly car
traffic in the city of Lund
An introduction
LundaMaTs is an integrated effort to create an environmentally friendly transportation
system in Lund, Sweden. Since 1997 studies have been conducted of how to
improve the environmental situation of the transportation in Lund, and during the next
three years 120 million Swedish crowns (about $12 million) are to be invested in different measures connected with the
LundaMaTs system.
An environmentally friendly transportation system is one that is in harmony with both human beings and the
environment. Not only does this apply to the use of the transportation devices, but also the production and the
final disposal of the vehicles as well as the infrastructure. This goal was to be reached by:
Minimizing the use of non-renewable resources,
stopping the emission of substances difficult to decompose,
maintaining the physical conditions needed to sustain natural replacement cycles and
by using renewable resources no faster than they are produced.
Lund, the bicycle cityLund is already today one of Sweden’s most
bicycle-friendly towns. But to be counted as a good European bicycle
city, Lund has to be further developed.
The people who are working with this have put up five projects, which make it easier for Lund to be
a better bicycle city. They are: To change people’s attitudes to the bicycle
traffic, so that people look at it as a part of the solution and not as a problem.
To make a better-built bicycle road network.
To start an organisation with a bicycle group and a bicycle centre, where people can go if they need help.
To make the bicycle traffic safer, so that there wont be more bicycle accidents just because there are more bicycle traffic.
To do scientifically evaluations of all the projects which are done.
When all this is done, you think that the bicycle traffic in Lund will increase with 40% until the year 2005, and with 70% until the year 2020.
In the same time, you think that the car traffic will be reduced by 3% until the year 2005, and by 5
% until the year 2020.
Other effects will be more open grounds and better health.
Environmentally friendly car trafficIn Lund we try to make the trips people take by car more environmentally friendly. Even though many people try to decrease the amount of cars
there will still be some left. There are four paragraphs:
If we change the car-owners’ way to think, so that they can see what damage the cars do to the environment, maybe they’ll buy more environmentally friendly cars.
Technical improvements in vehicles, for example in the engine, preheaters, new forms of fuel and new types of vehicles can make the cars more environmentally friendly.
If we change the street traffic, it could be done for the better of the environment.
More parking lots outside Lund would make a more car-free inner-city.
With an environmentally friendly car-traffic the emissions of carbon dioxide reduces a whole lot, but this is something that the community may
find hard to affect.
Extended public transportationThe project extended public transportation includes five separate projects, all of them
directed at reducing dependency upon cars to improving public transportations. Many of these projects are expected to result positive effects
not only in the community but also in the entire region.
These five projects are the following:
The community is trying to get people to go by public transportation and to give high priority to strategic projects to improve it.
The building of two light rail systems, one which connects Lund with a nearby city and one which connects to the bigger working places in Lund. This will make people go with the light rail system instead of cars.
Intermodality, a project aimed to make it easier to change from one form of transportation to another.
Developing the public transportation within the town, so that the bus system is getting a higher priority.
Developing the regional public transportation so that it will be easier to reach sites outside Lund.
The costs of this project are estimated to be about $68 million.
Commercial and industrial transportationThis includes making both transportation of
workers, as well as goods and raw materials, environmentally friendly. The community’s role is
to initiate the projects and later on act as a catalyser. The four projects are at the moment:
Coordinated distribution, so that transports as much as possible are fully loaded so that no unnecessary power is used for transporting empty space. In average 25% of the trip is now without any cargo. When fully loading the transports the trucking transport will decrease and will give both economical and environmental profit.
Coordinated distribution
Transportation Demand Management
TDM (Transportation Demand Management) aimed at coordinating travel of employees through measures such as carpooling, car sharing, alternative collective traffic such as bicycles, telecommuting and parking management. These issues can be connected to the environmental certification ISO14000.
Competitive bidding in environmentally friendly transports, to work out guidelines for people to buy more environmentally friendly transports e.g. special kinds of fuels, education for the driver and the use of security measures.
Bidding of Transportation -Environmental Demands
Home delivery of goods, aiming at finding systems for home delivery of everyday commodities like buying food over the internet and get them delivered at home. Through purchasing goods you can decrease the use of transportation and decrease the environmental burden. It probably won’t cost any more than it costs now to drive and buy food by yourself.
Decrease the Purchasing Transportations
Other Environmental Solutions
In Landskrona, the community has decided to invest in trolley bus technology which is unique for Sweden. Lund, Malmoe and a lot of other cities have come far with alternative fuels and vehicles, e.g. electrical vehicles, gas buses, ethanol cars etc.
ITIt is a difficult thing to predict whether IT will decrease the
amount of travelling or not, but it’s very likely to change travelling patterns, so that there will be fewer
short trips and instead more long ones, the latter through an increase of global connections being established. The three aims of the reform are:
Creating IT-centres in small communities to increase telecommuting,
increasing internet support for various projects and
routing guidance information systems in order to minimize the distance travelled.
