PresidentsWelcomeIwanttothankyouforbeingamemberoftheElkGroveHistoricalSociety.Ithasbeenadifficultyearforsomanypeopleinmanydifferentways.YoursupportissoimportanttoourorganizationinpreservinghistoryintheElkGrove,GaltandSacramentoCountyregion.ThemostrecenthistoryactivitywastheFoulksHouseDedicationperformedbytheNativeSon’softheGoldenWestatHeritageParkonDecember5.ThankstoCountySupervisorDonNottoli,CosumnesCommunityServicesBoardMemberJimLuttrellforattending,alongwithmanyFoulksfamilymembersandourmembership.Year2021appearstobeheadedforalongtermCOVID19periodrequiringprotectivehealthandoperationalmeasures.ItispossibleourregionwillbesubjecttoShelter-in-Placerequirementsagainforthreeweeks.Ourdailyroutinesareimpacted,likeshopping,dining,travelanddailybusinessneeds,wherewearingmasks,socialdistancing(6feet)andtemperaturechecksarerequired.Manybusinessesarenolongeroperating.TheHistoricalSocietyhashadtoadjusttohavecomputer/phoneVirtualBoardMeetings,nolongermeetinginperson.Generalsessionmeetingsarecanceled.

TheNewHistoricalSocietyBoardMembers

TheAnnualBoardPlanningMeetingisinquestion,astohowitmaybeconducted.TheRhoadsSchoolEducationalClassesarecanceledfortheyear.EventPlanningisdifficultatbest,astowhetherwecanhostthemorcancelthem.IwanttothanktherecentlyelectedandappointedBoardMembersfortheHistoricalSociety.Theyarecarryingonouroperationsandbusinesswiththeirdedicationtoserve.TheyareRosemarieMiller,1stVP;DennisBuscher,2ndVP;PamPhelps,RecodingSecretary;CindyMahon,CorrespondingSecretary;JeanetteLawson,Treasurer;DavidChalmers,FacilitiesManager;LouieSilveira,Webmaster/NewsletterEditor/ArchivistandRobertaTanner,RhoadsSchoolDirector.Ialsowanttothankthemanycommitteechairpersons,assistantpositionsandmembersthatcontinuetovolunteertheirtime.WithalittleluckwehopetohavetheYardSaleinJune,whilewearestillmonitoringpossibilitiesfortheSpringTea.BigDayofGivingisjustaroundthecornerinMay.Theseeventsarekeytofundingourprojects,liketheSummerKitchentobeattachedtoElkGroveHouse.Withyourhelpandkindness,wewillmoveforwardsuccessfully.Happy Holidays and New Year 2021! Jessie(Cumpston)Baker

WeallknowthefabulousElkGrovewoman,JessieBaker,themotherofasonwithdisabilities,whoimmersedherselfinastatewidequesttofindopportunitiesforherson’seducation.Ultimately,shecreatedthefirstpublicschoolinCaliforniaforchildrenwithseverementalandphysicaldisabilitiesin1963.TheJessieBakerSchoolislocatedbehindouroldElkGroveElementary(nowCCSDheadquarters).SheforeverchangedthewaywelookatspecialeducationalloverCaliforniaandinrecognitionofherperseveranceanddedication;shewasnamedElkGrove’sCitizenoftheYearin1965.ShewasborninEauGalleDU,WisconsintoRoyalCumpston(1872-1936)&Ivah(Vanderpool)-Cumpston(1877-1970).

TheirdaughterJessieEmmaCumpstonmarriedLesterBaker(1900-1961)andtheyhadthreechildren.(FYI–AbranchoftheCumpstonfamilyownedtheSheldonstore,whichultimately,becametheSheldonInnRestaurant)

Butdidyouknow?InanoldarticleabouttheElkGroveFireDepartment,theytellstoriesofseverallocalresidentswhomadeearlycontributions...“Oneofthemostinterestingstoriesoflocalfirefightingisthatofthefirstwomanvolunteerfirefighterinthearea,JessieCumpston.ShegraduatedfromElkGroveHighSchoolin1920,butasa17year-oldstudent,shetookthetaskoffirewatching.ThewindmillonherparentsranchonBrucevilleRoadwasherlookout.Sheclimbeditseveraltimesadaytoseeiftherewasanydangertothesurroundingfarms.Herhorse,Cleo,waskeptsaddledandreadytogoifneeded.Whenshespottedagrassfire,sherodeacrossthecountrysidetonotifythefarmers.Everyonekeptmilkcansandwashtubsfilledwithwaterforjustsuchemergencies.Thesewerequicklybroughttothefirescene.Everyonepitchedinbydippinggunnysacsintothewaterandswattingouttheflames.Teamworkwasessential,forfastmovinggrassfirescoulddestroygrainfieldsinminutesandreduceeventhemostsuccessfulfarmertocindersandashes.”

OurLivingHistoryProgramisinjeopardy.Ourdocentsareindependentcontractorsandwiththenewlawsarefindingitdifficulttoworkunderthenewguidelines.Weare

researchingpossibilitiesbutwillhavetoseeifwecancontinuetheprogram.

OnSaturday,December5,theoldestsurvivinghouseintheSacramentoarea,theFoulksHousewasdedicatedatHeritagePark,after167yearsandsixgenerationsoffamily.Itwasmovedtotheparkin2005andittookus15yearstoraisefundsand

completetherestorationandwecouldn’tbeprouder.Thankyou,members!

Theeventwasattendedbyabout85interestedguests,including15FoulksfamilydescendantsandourownBoardofSupervisorRepresentativeDonNottoli.Local

historianDennisBuschergavea10-minutenarrativeofthefamily’shistorythathadusallinaweofthisfamilyandincrediblewomanandwhatshewasabletoaccomplish.TheNativeSonsoftheGoldenWestinstalledabronzehistoricalmarkerwitha

ceremonythatwasledbyseveralofficersfromalloverthestate.Toursfollowedanditturnedouttobeatrulywonderfulevent.
