The ŠKODA Superb
Effective: April 2012
2
The Superb is a car with history dating from the 1930s. The original Superb’s design was luxurious and elegant both inside and out, built to appeal to the world’s leaders and royalty. Superb takes its sumptuous design cues from its earliest predecessor and builds on these strengths.
The ŠKODA design philosophy is to produce cars offering the best of both worlds – world class engines, smoothtransmissions and high specifications, wrapped in distinctive, elegant and practical bodies.
The Superb takes this philosophy and develops it. It’s the first car ever to have a boot which can be opened as a hatch or a saloon. It has more rear legroom than manyprestige chauffeur cars, and some nifty technological advances such as AFS (adaptive front light system), touch screen technology and park assist.
Now, building on the considerable strengths of the awardwinning hatchback the Superb Estate is the largest and most luxurious car to ever wear the ŠKODA badge.
So now the introductions over, why not have a look at the Superb in a little more detail?

ŠKODA Superb Estate key features
Luggage compartment lighting. The boot of the Superb Estatecontains some thoughtful features to make life a little easier. Two fixed lights on the inside of the tailgate illuminate theinside of the boot when open, whilst the parcel shelf retractswhen touched, so you can load bags without having to putthem down.
Electrically controlled fifth door. The Superb Estate isavailable with an optional electrically operated boot. At thetouch of a button - either beside the gearstick, on the key fob(press and hold for 2 seconds) or on the boot itself, the bootwill open automatically.
When you have finished loading, press the button on the insideof the tailgate and the boot will close. This system has a cleverfeature for when you may park somewhere with a low ceiling -the height of the boot opening can be pre-set so you don’thave to worry about any unwanted scrapes and dents.
4
Handy light. A handy LEDlight positioned on the inside of the boot, illuminates thelarge luggage area when thetailgate is opened. The lightcan also be removed andused as a torch. It has amagnetic back so that it canbe attached in any positionon the car in case you everneed to light a specific areain the dark.
5
Partition system. The Superb Estate features a very functional partitionand tether system (standardon SE and Elegance). Twoaluminium plates run thelength of the boot and havean extendable bar to keeplarge items in place with atether system to keep smalleritems stowed to one side. Both the bar and tethersystem are removable.
6
ŠKODA Superb Hatch key features
Incredible space. The Superb has an enormous 595 litres of usable space in theboot. With the seats down, the Superb offers an astonishing1,700 litres of space. Passengers benefit from enormousamounts of legroom, more than even an S Class Mercedes.
7
Park assist. Optional on Superb SE, SE Plus and Elegance. Park assist is an innovative system that uses a set of ultrasonicsensors placed at various points around the car to judge the suitability of parking space before assisting in the parkingmanoeuvre itself.
Twindoor (Hatch only). Twindoor is ŠKODA’s revolutionary bootopening mechanism which allows the boot to be opened intwo different ways; as a hatch or as a saloon at the simplesttouch of a button. This gives you great versatility and morepracticality compared to a standard hatchback or saloon car.
Touchscreen Technology. There are three touchscreensystems available on Superb;the ‘Bolero’ with integrated 6 CD changer and SD cardreader (standard on SE) andthe‘Columbus’ or 'Amundsen'satellite navigation unitswith a 30Gb hard drive andSD card reader ('Amundsen' isstandard on SE Plus whilst'Columbus' is standard onElegance and optional on SE).Each of these systemsreduce the physical numberof buttons on the dashboard, using an innovative and easyto follow interface. Theyallow the driver to controlfeatures within the car, aswell as displaying informationregarding the vehicle such as parking sensors, heatedseats and externaltemperature etc.

1.6 TDI CR 105PS DPF. The economical four cylinder 1.6 TDI dieselengine in the GreenLine II produces just 114g/km CO2 which meansa VED band of C, which is £0 road tax for the first 12 months.
The Superb GreenLine II has an excellent combined fuel economyof 64.2 mpg.
Low profile tyres. The Superb GreenLine II has 16” Spectrum Alloys (205/55 R16 91H) these lighter alloy wheels with low rolling resistance tyres have a higher prescribed air pressure to reduce friction.
Energy Recovery. Energy recovery is the process of convertingkinetic energy (energy created through movement) back intousable electricity, which is either stored in the battery, orimmediately used again by electrical components on the vehicle.
Depending on driving style, electrical energy is supplied to thevehicle by the alternator or directly by the battery. The principle ofenergy recovery is to reduce the load on the engine and thereforecontribute to lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption.
Stop/start System. This innovative system turns off the enginewhen it is not needed, for example when the driver is stopped attraffic lights or in heavy traffic.
When a normal car is stationary, the engine will idle, which in turnconsumes fuel and generates emissions. The Stop/start systemcleverly cuts out this unnecessary work by stopping the engineautomatically when the car is stationary, in neutral and the clutchpedal is released.
The Stop/start system does not inhibit a quick getaway either. As soon as the driver presses the clutch to put the vehicle in gear, the engine immediately starts up so acceleration is as instant as if the car had been idling.
Aerodynamics. One of the simplest ways to improve fuel efficiencyand reduce emissions, is to create a more aerodynamic vehicle.
The Superb GreenLine II has a small rear boot spoiler (Hatch only)and slightly lowered suspension to facilitate better airflow.
To keep the weight and drag of the GreenLine II models down to a minimum and thus ensure the model is as efficient as possible, there is a reduced list of options available.
However, the comfort and safety of all occupants has not beencompromised and so important features like airbags and airconditioning have been retained.
Gear recommendations. The recommended gear feature on the trip computer or Maxi-dotdisplay shows the driver whether the gear they are in is appropriateor whether they need to change up or down.
The aim is to help the driver achieve optimum engine speed andreduce fuel consumption.
ŠKODA GreenLine II Technology
As the world becomes more environmentally sensitive, ŠKODA has responded by developing GreenLine II technology. The following information will explain the key technological features of GreenLine II and how they contribute to making a cleaner, greener customer experience, as well as reducing fuel costs for the driver and our impact on the environment. GreenLine II is available on Superb S, SE and Elegance.
The optional equipment list on Superb GreenLine II is the same as the
corresponding trim level, with some exceptions. Due to weight and power
restrictions some options are unavailable on GreenLine II.
Please see page 22-23 for availability information.

EU Directive 99/94. The consumption
calculation according to 1999/100/EC is
based on the actual unladen weight of the
vehicle. Additional specifications can lead
to a higher weight class and hence to
consumption figures of this higher weight
class. The driving style, road and traffic
conditions, environmental influences and
vehicle condition can in practice lead to
consumption figures which may differ from
those calculated in this standard.

ABS: the anti-lock braking systemprevents the wheels from lockingduring heavy or emergency braking, enabling the vehicle to remainsteerable. When braking, wheel speed sensors measure the roadwheel speed and should one or more wheels start to lock the systemreduces brake pressure to that wheel.
Elements of the ABS System :-
• Dual Rate Vacuum Brake Boosters:increases brake effort underemergency braking conditions.
• EBC: Electronic brake control. The engine brake torque controlregulates the power supply byintervening with the enginemanagement system.
• EBD (aka EBV): Electronic BrakeDistribution automaticallydistributes different pressures tothe front and rear brakes to stop the rear wheels from locking upunder heavy braking. It alsocompensates for loaded andunloaded vehicles therefore doingaway with the need for a LoadSensing Valve on the rear axle.
CAN Bus: the CAN Bus is anelectronic data bus which links thevarious different electronic controlsystems in the car. It ensures ideal co-ordination between systems andreduces the amount of wiring neededin the car.
Fuel cut-out: should one or more of the airbags inflate after anaccident, this system automaticallycuts out the fuel supply, thuspreventing subsequent leakage of the diesel or petrol.
Trip Computer: the trip computer notonly features an impressive range ofdata displays, operating it is simplicityitself. A multifunction touch keyenables you to call up all relevantdata on the easy-to-read display.Features include external temperature, time, current fuel consumption, averagefuel consumption, miles driven andaverage speed.
DPF: diesel particulate filter is part ofthe exhaust system responsible forcleaning the engine exhaust gasesbefore they enter the atmosphere. The DPF catches soot particlesemitted in the exhaust gas and itworks in conjunction with thecatalytic converter, which reduces theamount of harmful gases entering the atmosphere. The DPF mustperiodically be emptied of the soot particles, a process known asregeneration. This involves elevatedexhaust system temperatures. A drivingstyle is required during regeneration, where a constant vehicle speed above37 mph must be maintained. This doesnot always suit customers who makefrequent short journeys or experiencestop/start driving or drive within inner-city or urban areas.
CR: the completely new range ofdiesel engines are built on a systemof Common-Rail fuel injection. The diesel engines have a high-pressure common rail direct injectionfuel system and four-valve technology. As a result, the new engines are muchquieter, more refined in their operationand consume less fuel, compared tothe Pump Duse engines andsignificantly reduce emissions.
ESP: electronic stability programme isdesigned to stabilise the dynamichandling response of the vehicle bycounteracting any tendency towardsoversteer or understeer. The ESPconstantly compares the actualmovement of the vehicle withpredetermined values and accordingto the situation ESP reacts by brakingeach wheel individually (according todirection of slip) and automaticallyadjusting the engine’s output.
Elements of ESP system:-
• ASR: anti-slip regulation tractioncontrol ensures the Superb’sstability when pulling away oraccelerating. If the engine power ortorque being transmitted to thedrive wheels is too great, forexample on a slippery road surface, engine torque is automaticallyreduced until optimum road holdingreturns, thus preventing wheelspin.A light indicates whether the ASRsystem is on. It can be manuallyswitched off.
• MSR: the engine torque controlsystem recognises when the wheelsare subject to too much slippageand regulates the power supply by intervening in the enginemanagement system. This preventswheelspin when, for example, changing down on a smooth or wetroad surface. MSR is a constituentpart of the ASR system.
• EDL: the electronic differential lockcontinually compares the rpm of thedrive wheels, and if it identifies adifference between them whichcould lead to an individual wheelspinning, for example if the twowheels are on different types ofsurface or accelerating on wetleaves, the system brakes the wheelaffected until uniform rpm of alldrive wheels is restored.
• HBA: Hydraulic brake assistantincreases the optimal build-up ofbrake power. It ensures completeuse of the brake system potential, thus shortening the brakingdistance.
• HHC: Hill hold control allows for asafe hill start by holding the brakefor a small amount of time, reducingthe risk of unintentional reversing orroll back.
• TPM: Draws the driver’s attention toany pressure loss in any of the tyres.Early warning can prevent damagefrom occurring as a result of anunder inflated tyre or a defect thatradically changes the cars behaviourand driveability.
• DSR: Driver SteeringRecommendation – in a crisissituation it helps the driver stabilize a skid by making a slightintervention in the steering.
• ESBS: Electronic Stability BrakeSystem – targeted interventions inthe braking process improve thehandling of a car as it brakes whenpassing round a bend and keeps itfrom veering.
• AFM: records and assesses allavailable data about the journey to optimize the ESP system’sreactions, which can thus beadapted to any driving style and the current vehicle payload.
• Xenon lights: the Xenon lightsproduce about 2.5 times the light of standard Halogen lights with 35% less energy consumption.
