OUR SUGGESTION BOX – MAY I SUGGEST?
As part of our Strategic Plan, our Saint Paschal Baylon Pastoral Staff and Pastoral Council are always interested in your ideas, suggestions, improvements and more! In the Fickel Narthex there is a “yellow” suggestion box where you may write your suggestion. Through our “ombudsman,” Tom Kelley, you are able to share your input through an email: [email protected].
FROM THE PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE…
14th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: “Come to me all who are burdened; I will give you rest.” How often in the last few months has this scripture line, found in today’s Gospel, been on your mind? There has been so much unrest in our world and in our lives. Have you
had trouble sleeping? Staying on a diet? Being motivated? You are not alone! It’s perhaps one reality that is united in the COVID-19 crisis across the globe.
Jesus gives us assurance once again! Christ hopes for us to join the “yoke club.” What I mean by that is that we each have a buddy who is working, living, being side-by-side, our best friend, Christ the LORD. Christ is next to us with that yoke, perhaps a little tight, but not getting rid of the pain and suffering. Christ is there with us in the suffering. And just as animals have a yoke to make them work in tandem, we too have this yoke buddy in Jesus, who is working in tandem with us as we plow through these new, uncharted times. What assurance we have indeed!
HELP WITH OUR VIDEOTAPING THE MASS: How the team and I miss the Bourgeois Broadcasting Booth on Sundays! That’s where we used to tape the Mass with the great quality of our equipment there. We are so grateful to Deacon Joe and his family for donating this to the school. Could you help us replicate this in the church? The bids we are looking at bring a system with 5 cameras (above the heads of our congregation), mixing board, Wi-Fi, installed into our sound system, with installation for $15,000.00. This would allow us to broadcast ANY EVENT in the church for we would stream it live to our Facebook page and then it would automatically upload to our YouTube channel. It’s the magic of technology – but at a price to pay. Would you be able to help us with a donation specifically for this? We would even honor you or your love one that you donate the system to with your name, as we did for the Jansky Learning Center school broadcasting center. Please let me know!
Those of you who are regular viewers know how each week there have been obstacles to sound, folks in the way, signal lost (trying to use as a hotspot too) and the challenge of being 90 feet from what we are taping. We thank you for your support and the extra amounts that people have been donating due to the fact we are doing this outreach and evangelization.
OPENING UP SLOWLY: As we all know, COVID-19 is starting to spike again. We are being extra cautious here at SPB, and are so grateful for all the folks are doing to keep it so. If a group is going to meet:• Please have the group leader take attendance for
tracking purposes – no sign-in sheets• Wear masks• Make sure you have some hand sanitizer.• Schedule with Michelle (mmazza@saintpaschal.
com), our Business Manager, or me, and maintain physical distancing at all time. Many are using the larger spaces or outdoors.
THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME JUNE 28, 2020
MINISTRY LEADERS: If you have an announcement for Mass, email Roberta at [email protected]. Also know that the Ministry Banners are due. If you didn’t get a chance to make one, you may pick up the material in the parish office.
UPDATED OFFICE HOURS: We are pleased to have Gigi back in the front office, now in her revised role as Office Manager. She is here Monday-Thursdays, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
PLEASE BRING BACK YOUR BOTTLES: Thanks for helping Birthright and young mothers with pregnancies through your Baby Bottle donations. Bring them to the narthex baskets or at the front office. We are grateful to Linda and Jim Peters from our For Life Committee for their annual efforts to bring us awareness and organize this special project.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Our parish is now in a new fiscal year. We’ll have a report later in July with how we did. I am so grateful for the hard work of our parishioners, helping us catch up, sacrifice and share their treasure with our parish family. It’s also time for my annual summer time away. Please pray for my travels as I drive to see my family in New England.
In Christ our Eucharist,
Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS, Class of SPB 1979Pastor - @jtlanesss or [email protected]
A Brief History of the Shrine of Saint Ann, Highland Heights, OHBy Brother Michael Perez, SSS
Around the year 1978, a part of the relic of St. Ann from New York, was brought to our community of Saint Paschal Baylon here in Highland Heights. The relic is housed in the former Seminary Chapel. Thus was established the Shrine of St. Ann in Cleveland. The beauty of this chapel is its simplicity. The chapel was designed to keep the mind focused on the goal of the students, their ordination to the Priesthood. To this end the Celebration of the Eucharist and the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament was central, besides their academic studies. The Way of the Cross is on the wall as you exit. They are square wood carved symbols with Latin text. They remind us, and the students of old that you are to go into the world, to take up the cross and follow the
LORD. As you enter the Chapel, on both sides of the doors, are seven (7) small wood carved square plaques, these represented the seven steps towards Ordination. The student received: Tonsure, Porter, Lector, Exorcist, Acolyte, Subdeacon, Deacon, Priesthood. These plaques were designed by one of our Fathers when he was a student. When the Chapel became the Shrine, Bro. Gary LaVerdiere, SSS redesigned the seminary chapel to make it the Saint Ann Shrine. He worked with local artist Norbert Koehn. The Tabernacle was designed after the celebrated Benedictine Monastery of Cluny in France, established around the year 910. On the outside wall of the chapel is a pictorial design of the tabernacle and reliquary and kneeler. The story of the special statue of Saint Ann with the Child Jesus Mary is well described.
Daily Eucharist is celebrated at 11:30 a.m. There is also the Rosary before the Mass there and the veneration of the relic of Saint Ann on Tuesdays. Annually a TRIDUUM is held in the parish Church. Thus the devotion of our Province is expressed. Good Saint Ann, pray for us! Pray for our children, pray for healing, protect our families.

Because of you, thousands of people across our diocese have found help and hope at Catholic Charities during these challenging times.
Requests for assistance have increased drastically since the pandemic began. Hot meal programs that transitioned to a takeout model saw an increase of up to 50%, Saint Augustine Hunger Center is delivering more than 500 meals per day to those in need, prepackaged pantry distribution has increased up to 3x more than before the pandemic began, and the Saint Elizabeth Center shelter is practicing social distancing by moving all clients to motels. Thanks to your generosity, we are able to respond to these requests, serving more people and changing more lives than we ever thought possible. As of April 30th, a total of 36,249 faithful donors from across the Diocese have pledged $10.5 million towards the Annual Appeal goal of $13.5million. Here at Saint Paschal Baylon, 275 participated (that’s only 15% of our parish), Pledged $116,363/Received $82,207 – Parish Goal $162,641. Thank you on behalf of those served by Catholic Charities.
