The Reproductive System!
Inside the woman’s body
• For a women the possibility for reproduction starts in the ovaries.
• The ovaries act as an egg carton, housing more than 500,000 eggs, in which a women comes fully stocked
with at birth.
• The female egg reaches it’s maturity in one of the two ovaries usually between the 12th and 16th
days of the menstrual cycle.
Woman’s body• When a mature egg is released into the
abdomen its sucked up by a fallopian tube, which is a canal leading from the
ovaries to the uterus.• This is known as ovulation.
• The average egg only lives in a woman’s body for 24 hours, if it is not met by a
healthy sperm, it ends it’s journey at the uterus where it disintegrates and is expelled in your menstrual cycle.
The man’s body: making the baby fertilizer.
• While women are making a single egg every month, men are almost
constantly at work producing millions of sperm.
• While women are fully stocked with all the eggs they’ll ever need, men make
sperm on a regular basis.• From start to finish it takes about 64-
72 days to create a new sperm cell.
• Even with all the sperm created only one can fertilize an egg.
• The gender of a child depends on which sperm burrows into the egg first.
• Sperm with Y chromosome makes a boy.• Sperm with X chromosome makes a girl.
• Since the average sperm only lives a few weeks in a man’s body, about
200-350 million sperm are released in each ejaculation.
• Sperm production begins in the testicles, but the only way a
healthy sperm can be produced is if it at 94 degrees. The reason testicles are outside the body is
because they’re very sensitive to temperature.
• Once produced the sperm is stored in a section of the
testicles called the epididymis where it’s mixed with semen
prior to ejaculation.
INTERCOURSE!
• Once you get to the big moment, intercourse your body builds up tension
hoping it all ends up in a important biological function, an ORGASM!
• In men it is essential, when a man has a orgasm enriched semen is propelled
against a woman’s cervix at 10 MILES PER HOUR!
• Ejaculation gives the sperm a head start to the egg.
• When the woman has a orgasm it aids in the swimming of sperm to the cervix.
The Sperm Journey(aka conception)
• If conception is going to happen it usually does in the first few hours of
sex.• The first obstacle for sperm is the acid level in the vagina which can be
deadly to sperm.
• Also, the cervical mucus acts as a net and traps the sperm, only
the strongest will make it through.
• In all, the sperm must travel about 7 inches from the cervix,
through the uterus, and then the fallopian tubes.
The journey goes on…
• The fastest swimmer can find the egg in as little as 45 minutes, but some
may take up to 12 hours.• If the sperm doesn’t find a egg at the
time of intercourse they can wait up to 72 hours in the fallopian tubes.
And on….
• Once the sperms find the egg they still must penetrate the egg’s outer
shell.• Once one does the egg
instantaneously makes a shield so that no other sperm can get in.
It’s the end of their journey!
Once the sperm is safely inside, the real miracle begins.
You are not actually pregnant till the bunch of new cells, called the
embryo, travels down the fallopian tube and attaches to the wall of
your uterus.
Things to know…
• Woman have a 25% chance of getting pregnant.
