RECTOR’S LETTERMy dear friends,St George’s Church Baghdad The next time your daily paper plants a question in your mind aboutMuslims, spare a thought for the Church of England in Iraq. Church of England in Iraq! I never knew there was such a thing!. Well, there is, and if you are C of E, then it is part of your church. It’s beenthere since 1936, and Canon Andrew White is the Vicar. It’s a bit bigger than any of the parishes in the Owmby Group. It has over1200 members, and is now, in the middle of all the violence, the only growing churchin Baghdad. How do I know all this?
Well, Canon White wrote a letter to the Bishop of Lincoln, and the Bishop ofLincoln has passed it on to me so that I can pass it on to you. Here it is.
February 2007
We write to you in the hope that you will be able to encourage your people andparishes to support our parish. Surely it is the most dangerous parish in the world. Inthe past month we have had over 110 people killed in our road of Haifa Street. 30bodies were recently hanged on the lamp-posts outside of our Church. But people stillflock to worship their God. We have learnt that when everything is gone, Jesus is allwe have left.We as a church have to look after all of our people. Increasingly our staff and malemembers of the Church have been killed, so we have to look after their families, andwe do so with joy. With inflation at 77% and the fall of the $US against the Iraqi Dinar,we are now having to find $18,180 per month. This works out at about £300 per day,and we do have many churches that support us for a day, covering 35% of thecalendar. We are therefore looking for more. Last year the Dioceses of Guildford andPortsmouth supported us as part of their lent appeal; this has dramatically helped usto continue amidst great opposition. We have wonderful people and I love them all. They are so grateful to the Churches inEngland for their help in our chaos and tragedy. We will not stop serving the Prince ofPeace and we invite you to join with us in our service of God in this difficult place. Iattach some of our updates and reports which will give you a greater idea of ourparish.Blessings and Peace from Baghdad,
Canon Andrew WhiteAnglican Priest in Iraq

GLENTHAM PARISH COUNCIL
The following was discussed at Glentham Parish Council’sMeeting held on Thursday 9th November 2006 in The Village HallMembers of the public raised concerns about the following issues:
· Four year plan – The Chairman, Cllr G Wiseman said that the Parish Planhad, in effect taken over the proposed four year plan. The Parish Plan wouldformulate an Action Plan which would define the aspirations of the Parish.
· Village sign – Lincolnshire County Council were not willing to pay for newsigns. Clerk had been exploring funding opportunities when the Parish Planconcept arose. It seemed more applicable to leave this matter to the SteeringGroup who could ascertain if the village wanted new signs as only onedesign had been submitted after the appeal.
· Former Councillor – A thank you letter had been sent to Cllr Wilson. TheCouncil and the Parish are very grateful for all Mr Wilson’s hard work andhis wisdom and expertise will be missed.
CHAIRMAN’S REPORTCllr G Wiseman reported that Councillor R Summers had tendered her resignation. Aletter of thanks for her past hard work has been sent to Mrs Summers. Noticesregarding the vacancy have been put on the Village Hall noticeboard. The Council isnow two members short. Parishioners are reminded that the Parish Council do anenormous amount of work, which is often not recognised, especially with regard toHighways. Anyone who feels they could commit to hard work with no payment, would be very welcome to apply for these vacancies! On a serious note, if you areinterested in your community and would like more involvement and be able to reallymake a difference by having a voice in how the Parish is run, please contact the Clerkon 01427 628417.PLANNING – MONCKS ARMS SITE – GRANTED UNDER DELEGATED DECISIONSTEERING GROUP – The grant application has been submitted. The Group have awhole summers worth of activities lined up – watch this space! There is a suggestionbox in the Post Office for anyone with bright ideas.CLOCK- Grant funding is still being sought.LITTER BINS – Several litter bins have been broken and the Council are seeking tohave these replaced.REPORT FROM VILLAGE HALL - Cllr A Lakeman reported that the recentquestionnaire had been well received and several new ideas put forward.PLAYGROUND FENCINGThe damaged fencing has been repaired and sprayed.NOTICEBOARDSThe Clerk is unable to open one of the noticeboards and the other is extremely stiff. Itwas agreed that Mr Harris should be asked to repair these.WEBSITE:Cllr G Fox is to administer the new Parish Council website and will be asking foritems for inclusion on this LCC run site.

‘The story of the loaf from the field to the table’ by Mr Stan Dales was a veryentertaining talk given by a true Lincolnshire ‘gent’. His enthusiasm for country lifeand his reminiscing of life ‘as it were’ was very pleasant. His love of the oldertractors and farming machinery was very evident.
Mr Geoff Trinder will be speaking on April 10th at 7.30.p.m. on ‘His WildlifeGarden’.
Thin out bamboo plantsNOW'’S the time to thin out bamboo canes, before new growth starts.Pull out any dead leaves, then snip out thin, weak shoots at ground level. You can take out up to a third of the canes, which will leave you with an open
plant that looks much better. If your bamboos are growing in the garden, watch out for new plants
appearing from underground. They can appear several feet from the parent plant andcould invade a large area of your garden if you don't remove them.
Now's the time to chop out these spreading clumps — they're perfectly goodplants and ideal for potting or planting in another part of the garden.

HACKTHORN C.OF.E PRIMARY SCHOOL
Forget London, Paris and Milan, Hackthorn is now the fashion design capitalof the world – official. Key Stage 2 were visited by the artist Wendy Reeve, whospent a day in school demonstrating the art of screen printing, and then brought outthe inner designer in our pupils, who set about printing their own t-shirts. The array ofideas which went on show at the ‘good work assembly’ later that week were a sight tobehold, ranging from designs to grace the backs of the 2020 England squad, throughto one particular example which Mr Picasso himself might have been quite pleasedwith.
Continuing the artistic theme, this time on the performance side, Key Stage 2took to the stage with a superb musical production of ‘The Iron Man’ based on thebook by Ted Hughes. This was a technical triumph overcoming many dauntingpractical difficulties as the show featured an earth quake, a dragon that flew to theSun and an Iron Man as big as a house!
Everyone is looking forward to meeting potential new classmates on April 2ndduring our preschool art afternoon , or if you are unable to join us then, why not comealong to our Easter Service at Hackthorn Church on April 5th at 2pm? Contact theschool on 01673 860295 for further details, or to request a School Brochure.
First week back after Easter sees the return of the weekly swimming lessons. We take the Whole School, because – as with all things – we believe the earlier theylearn, the better.
