It is my privilege to welcome everyone to this Liturgy, both those who havegathered from theparishes, chaplaincies, schools and conventsof ourDiocese in SaintBarnabas’Cathedral,andallwhowillbe following theMasson thediocesan JubileeofMercywebsite,www.bemerciful.co.uk;IalsowishtothankallthosewhohavepreparedtheLiturgyandtheresourcesthatwillbedistributedtoyouafterwardsforuseduringtheExtraordinaryJubileeYearofMercy.
Thelove,mercyandcompassionofGodareattheveryheartoftheGospel,andinthis Jubilee ofMercy we are being asked to celebrate thatmercy.We can do this byseeking the mercy of God in our own lives, by rediscovering the importance of theSacramentofReconciliationandcomingbacktotheLordinhumilityofheart,orbygoingonpilgrimagetotheHolyDoors,bothintheDioceseandbeyond,andseekingtheJubileeindulgence. Butwe are also called to celebrate this Year by sharing themercyofGodwithothers,bybeing‘Merciful,liketheFather’(Luke6:36),andfindingnewandcreativewaystoputintopracticethecorporalandspiritualworksofmercy,whichIcommendtoyou:
The corporalworks are: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe thenaked,welcomethestranger,visitthesickandtheimprisoned,burythedead.
Thespiritualworksare:tocounselthedoubtful, instructtheignorant,careaboutsinners,comforttheafflicted,forgiveoffences,bearwrongspatiently,andprayforthelivingandthedead.
So,aswededicatethisJubileetoAlmightyGodandaskfortheprayersofOurLadyof the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of the Diocese of Nottingham, let us in ourdailyprayergazemoreattentivelyonGod’smercy,asrevealedintheperson,works,andteachingofJesus,sothatwemightbecomeamoreeffectivesigntoothersofthismercy.

We gather in Saint Barnabas’ Cathedral for this Opening Liturgy of the ExtraordinaryJubileeofMercy,whichhasfiveaspects:
• TheIntroductoryRites.Duringthispartofthecelebration, intheMcMahonRoominCathedralHall,wewillgather,blessandpraiseGod,listentoapassagefromtheGospelaccordingtoStLuke,andhearapassage fromtheBullof Indictionof theExtraordinaryJubileeofMercy,‘Misericordiaevultus’
• TheSolemnProcessiontotheCathedral.TheprocessionsymbolisestheChurchasthepilgrimPeopleofGod.Pilgrimage‘hasaspecialplaceintheHolyYear,becauseit represents the journeyeachofusmakes in this life’,andourprocession recallsthe fact that ‘mercy isalsoagoal to reachand requiresdedicationandsacrifice’(MV14).
• TheOpeningoftheHolyDoorofMercy.Thedoorsofourchurcheshaveparticular
ChristologicalsignifiancebecauseChristhimself isthedoor,thegatewaybetweenusandGod.UsingthewordsofPsalm118,BishopPatrickwillinvoketheopeningoftheDoorthat leadsustoGod’smercifulheart,madeaccessiblethroughtheopenside of Christ on the Cross (cf Jn 19:34). The Cathedral’s Holy Door of Mercy isdecoratedtoremindusofitssymbolicvalue.StandingattheDoor,theBishopwillholdtheBookofGospels,thewordofmercy,holdingitforusalltosee.AswellastheHolyDoorsofMercy intheCathedral,therewillbeholydoors inMountSaintBernard Abbey, Holy Cross Priory in Leicester and, for the benefit of the youngpeopleofourDiocese, theBriarsCatholicYouthRetreatCentre. Inaddition,eachchurchandchapelintheDiocesewillhaveadecorated‘DoorofMercy’,whichcaneitherbethedooroftheconfessionalorasuitablechapel,toremindusoftherolethatGod’smercyshouldplayinourdailylives.
• TheRemembranceofOurBaptism.TheSacramentofBaptismisthedoorbywhich
weenterthecommunityoftheChurch,andtheblessingofholywater,andthentheBishop’s sprinklinguswith it,area living reminderof this sacrament. Justifiedbyfaith,unitedwithChristinhisDeathandResurrection,andanointedwiththeHolySpirit,thebaptisedareadoptedasGod’ssonsanddaughters,becomemembersoftheBodyofChrist,andaremadetemplesoftheHolySpirit,‘achosenrace,aroyalpriesthood,aholynation,apeoplesetapart’(1Peter2:9).
• The Eucharistic Celebration. As the action of Christ and the People of God, the
celebration of Mass is the centre of the whole Christian life for the UniversalChurch,foreverydioceseandforeachCatholiccommunity.Thesacredliturgyisthethreshold of God and humanity, because in it God sanctifies the world throughChrist,andthehumanraceoffershimfittingworship,adoringtheFatherthroughJesusChristintheHolySpirit.IneachcelebrationofMass,Godrusheswithmercytomeeteveryonewhoseekshimwithasincereheart; that iswhytheEucharisticCelebrationistheclimaxoftoday’sOpeningoftheExtraordinaryJubileeofMercy.
THEINTRODUCTORYRITESAsmanyaspossibleareaskedtogatherinandaroundtheMcMahonRoom,inCathedralHall, for the Introductory Rites. Thosewho cannot gather in the Roomandwhowouldprefer to stay in the Cathedral will be able to take part in the Introductory Rites bylistening to the Bishop, Deacon and Reader on the PA system and by making theresponses.While the Bishop accompanied by the concelebrants deacons andministers, process toCathedralHall,theCathedralChoirsingstheEntranceAntiphonfortheSolemnityoftheImmaculateConceptionoftheBlessedVirginMary(Isaiah61:10):

TheBishopintroducestoday’scelebration:TheBishop Dearlybelovedbrothersandsisters,witheyes fixedonJesusandhis
merciful face, Pope Francis, on this Solemnity of the ImmaculateConception,hasinauguratedanExtraordinaryJubilee,thusopeningtous,andtoallmenandwomen,thedoorofGod’smercy.
In communionwith theuniversal Church, this celebrationmarks thesolemnbeginning of theHoly Year in theChurchofNottingham; onSunday,doorsofmercywillbeopenedineverychurchandchapelinour Diocese, a prelude to the profound experience of grace andreconciliationthatawaitsusthisyear.
We shall joyfully listen to theGospel ofmercy, that Christ the Lord,the Lamb of Godwho takes away the sins of theworld, continuallyproclaims throughout the world, inviting us to rejoice in his love:aloveannouncedagainandagaintoeverycreatureonearth.
TheBishopinvitesustojoinhiminprayer:TheBishop Letuspray.

sum up themystery of the Christian faith.Mercy has become livingand visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him. eFather,‘richinmercy’,afterhavingrevealedhisnametoMosesas‘aGodmercifulandgracious,slowtoanger,andaboundinginsteadfastlove and faithfulness, has never ceased to show, in various waysthroughouthis-tory,hisdivinenature.Inthe‘fullnessoftime’,wheneverything had been arranged according to his plan of salvation, hesenthisonlySonintotheworld,bornoftheVirginMary,torevealhislove for us in a definitiveway.Whoever sees Jesus sees the Father.Jesus of Nazareth, by his words, his actions, and his entire personrevealsthemercyofGod.’
‘We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is awellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salvation depends on it.Mercy: theword reveals the verymystery of theMost Holy Trinity.Mercy:theultimateandsupremeactbywhichGodcomestomeetus.Mercy:thefundamental lawthatdwells intheheartofeverypersonwho looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on thepathof life.Mercy: thebridge that connectsGodandman, openingourheartstothehopeofbeinglovedforeverdespiteoursinfulness.’
‘Attimeswearecalledtogazeevenmoreattentivelyonmercysothatwemay become amore effective sign of the Father’s action in ourlives. For this reason I havepro- claimed anExtraordinary Jubilee ofMercyas a special time for the Church, a timewhen thewitness ofbelieversmightgrowstrongerandmoreeffective.’
