Congratulations Michigan Banner for Eight Years of EnlightenmentSaginaw, Michigan
has had its good share
of African-American
visionaries who have
conceived of ideas and
worked to bring them
to ingratiating fruition
in the community.
Im very proud to
have known and met
many of these visionaries such as Jerome
Buckley, Publisher of the Michigan Banner
newspaper, who Im proud to say was a serious
student in my African American History
classroom at Saginaw High School in the 70s.
He has now made history of his own by having
created a viable newspaper that has endured
and enlightened thousands of readers for eight
solid years of dependable and professional
journalism.
As part of his history lessons, Jerome
learned about The Black Codes during the era
of slavery that made it illegal to teach slaves to
read or write because learning and therewith
knowledge on the part of slaves might
intellectually awaken them and threaten the
institution of slavery. Jerome understood
that if you can shackle a persons mind that
you can then also shackle his outlook on life.
I hardily commend The Michigan Banner
and all who have helped to provide our
community with enlightenment for eight, glorious years. Knowledge is power.

To the staff and management of the Michigan Banner
Congratulat ionson your eighth year
of service to God and
the community. I
say service to God
and the community
because you have
been given a charge
to assist in educating
our community about
issues and problems that plague it. We are toldin the Bible that my people are destroyed
for the lack of knowledge; Hosea 4:6. You
are one of the sources of that knowledge for
our community.
Having the responsibility to assist in
educating a community is not an easy orwelcome task. Quite often, the educator is
vilified and criticized. The educator is asked
what makes them think that they have a right to
expose problems, or lack of leadership, or even
corruption. Newspapers have served in this role
in our country for as long as they have existed,
and must continue in that role. As a community
based newspaper, it is the responsibility of
the Banner to hold us accountable for what is
going on in the community. Some of us maynot always appreciate what you tell us, or how
you say it, but you have to continue to do what
you are charged to do.
As you celebrate not this anniversary, but
those to come in the future, continue to hold
up a banner which our community can lookto for light and direction. Continue to be a
spokesperson for those who fly under the
radar and are forgotten by the powers that
be. Continue to speak out for those who have
no voice of their own, but yearn to be heard.
You not only have a charge but a
responsibility to be successful. Your
continued success will help to usher others
in our community to the success that is due
to them.I will remain your friend and supporter as
we work together to move our community to
higher levels of success and growth.
Pastor Charles H. Coleman, D.C.E.

Thank youloyal advertisers and sponsors of which the
Banner would not be possible without them.
During our 8-year anniversary we are alsohonoring our nonprofit directory listings, for in
these times without the volunteers throughout
the community, much of the work could not be
accomplished. As we continue to move forward
with the effort of empowering communities
and changing Lives, we also thank you the
readership in the community and our extended
readership across the nation. No one is a lone
ranger in effecting our community and the
nation, and let there be no mistake that our
Great Lakes Region is blessed with theleadership that is a prototype for a nation.
We, at the Banner, believe we will once
again be acknowledged as we were in the
1960s when we received the distinction as
an All-American City; as we continue to
develop innovative ideas and bring those
ideas to completion for the success of the
Great Lakes Region.

In the June 16 edition, I invited readers
to provide their suggestions for what types
of articles they would like to see in The
Michigan Banner. The lack of response
is no surprise. Although I was trying to be
democratic, Im almost embarrassed to have
asked, because people dont want to besurveyed these days. Those who still carry
hope are looking for answers, action steps
and solutions.
This caused me to recall a neighborhood
meeting from within the past year. A
facilitator at the front of the room had a
big easel and a Marks-A-Lot pen. Through
audience participation she was making a list
of community problems and needs. For those
among us who have attended numeroussimilar meetings through the years, how
many times have we observed this process?
As the easel was filled with information, I
went to my own little pad. I wrote: Lack of
jobs, crime, schools, rundown neighborhood
conditions, and youth. Early during these
proceedings, I handed it to an acquaintance
who was sitting next to me. And sure enough,
this was close to the final result of all the
easel jottings. This does not make me proudto have done this. It was sort of cynical, and
did not require any sort of intelligence. Im
Who Will We Get in 2012?By Mike Thompson
For The Michigan Banner
just telling the little story to reinforce that most
of us are tired of being surveyed. Readers may
still send me suggestions at mwtsaginaw@
yahoo.com, but I am not going to focus anymore
on doing a survey. As Jerome Buckley and
Pastor Charles Coleman have written recently,
maybe sometimes we have to be lone rangersand step up.
On the pages of The Banner, a reader will
observe a wealth of positive actions that are
taking place here and now, and a boatload of
ideas that are in the development stage. Im
trying to figure out whether I have anything
different to offer. The word boycott keeps
going through my head, for some reason. Some
of the boycotts from the past, mostly national
but a few local were highly effective at rallying people and producing results. Think Cesar
Chavez and grapes. Think Jesse Jackson and
a host of corporate entities. The problem is, I
dont know exactly what to boycott. Wal-Mart?
FOX News? Fast food? Musical artists who
keep producing these lewd videos? There are
endless options. Also, people at that meeting
did not include lack of voting on their top
five list. To me, that is a big omission.
A couple historical notes have struck melately:
In researching the early Saginaw
experiences of the dearly departed Henry
Marsh, I found that Harry Browne nearly
was elected to the City Council in 1955,
six years prior to Marshs eventual victory
in 1961. Browne received 5,500 votes, but
he STILL lost. Last fall, Stacy Erwin Oakes
won the 95th District state House seat with2,235 votes. And the 95th District is larger,
at least geographically, than the city of
Saginaw. Please understand, this comparison
is not meant to be a reflection on Stacy. It
just goes to show how the lack of voting has
become epidemic.
In the mid-term national elections of
1966, there was a great White backlash
because of President Johnsons civil rights
legislation, along with Blacks staying on thesidelines. Democrats lost their advantage.
In the mid-term national elections of 2010,
there was a great White backlash simply
because of Barack Obama becoming
president. Democrats lost their advantage.
As a follow-up in 1968, we received Richard
Nixon as president. Who will we get in
2012? Mitt Romney? Michele Bachmann?
Newt Gingrich? This is why my lone ranger
self believes much more must happen so thatpeople become more politically engaged.

To be sure President Obamas
accomplishments are to be commended
and admired and you can count me as one
of them. But then had the commentary
stayed to overcoming circumstances and
accomplishment there would be little need to
comment on. Instead it broached the subjectof President. I am taken aback by the constant
refrain from Democrats that Republicans
stand opposed to President Obamas policies
and then infuse the idea that its racial. No, its political. Its called
public policy. If Republicans agreed with the President on HIS
agenda then that would make them Democrats I suppose. Many
tend to act that way anyway but thats a different commentary.
A President (R or D) tends to posture in public as being bi
partisan and cooperative; but behind the scenes appoints those
partisan zealots to carry out the Ideology work. The Healthcare
Option was a dismal political snafu that when its all said and done;
killed all of the Presidents opportunity to be transformative and
completely polarized the Right. It led to the retaking of the US
Congress and that was a fatal blow on a cooperative Congress.
This President is Centrist in much of his verbiage but behind the
curtain; weve learned like in The Wizard of Oz.things look
different behind the curtain. The field of Republicans running
in 2012 against the President is competitive only if its the smart
ticket. That well have to let play itself out along with any numberof economic factors or International conflicts were involved in.
Like they say; thats why we vote.

Editorials
It is Called Public PolicyPresident Barack Obama,Chess or something other
than chess.
As one who has taken the time to read the
books that President Obama has written, I am
constantly amazed at the people who are upsetat the President for working to govern from the
Center rather than from the left.
Anyone who takes the time to read the
two books, Dreams from my Father and the
Audacity of Hope, will learn that the reality
of President Obamas world is actually based
in the reality that success for our country will
come from leadership that is neither at the left nor the right, but as we
learned from President Clinton, in the center. As the President of all
people, as President Obama has repeatedly called himself, he realizesthat he must work from the center to move our country forward.
Those on the right, who went into the Presidents administration
stating that they wanted to see him fail, are doing all that they can
to insure that this happens. As a citizen, it is my hope that this
country succeeds, no matter who is leading. There were decisions
made by previous administrations that many of us disagreed with,
but we did not purposely work to cause that administration to fail.
Work was done to try to get the opposing point of view included in
the decisions. It is interesting that everything that Wall Street and big business
has asked for as assistance to create jobs has been done, but jobs
are not being created. What is happening is that profits are rising
at rates that are unprecedented. This is the tool that the Republican
Party will use to try to elect a President of their party. We need to
understand how this works. Jobs are created by business, business
tends to support the Republican Party, and it is not because they are
not making money that they cannot create jobs.
Republicans, if you love this country as much as you claim to,
lets work together to bring it back to the glory of the past. Successfuladministrations, of both parties, were successful because they worked
together and did not try to destroy the other party.

Dads Retirement from a Sons PerspectiveBy James Falls
I walked in the
Council Chamber of
Saginaw City Hall in
search for my father
when I encountered
two of his fellow
female co-workers.
After speaking to
them, one of them
asked me a question that I never thought
about in my entire life. The woman askedme, Do you think you will follow in your
fathers footsteps? Looking at her baffled
and thrown off by the question, my mundane
thoughts encourage me to laugh. In a jovial
manner, I smiled and replied no to the woman
and continued on the search for my father.
But then I sat down and began to think about
the question on an esoteric level.
My concentration at CMU is journalism,
which is completely on the other side of thespectrum of what my father does. Sitting at a
desk? Attending meetings and conferences?
Late nights at the office for over 25 years?
Thats not my ideal characteristics of a career
by any means.
As my fathers retirement party went on,
more people came up to me talking about my
fatherthe things he has done inside the office
and out. Employees from all over the building
were telling me about how my father affected
their lives. From bright smiles to helping people
get jobs, my father has done it all without the
extra paycheck.
He has been more than just a provider
for me and the rest of the familyhe has
provided for several others throughout the cityof Saginaw and you cant put a price on that.
Helping others out of the kindness of your
own heart is something that you dont see very
often, especially during these times.
One of my African proverbs (I believe its
Swahili) are as follows: A low-class man
will just talk; deeds are the hallmark of a
gentleman.That proverb best describes my
father. As a child, he always taught me to serve
others, not for self-gratification, but to make adifference in a persons life.
And I finally understood that seeing
how people were sad to see him leave. His
vibrant energy illuminated that building, and
personally I believe thats what helped kept the
building at peacewell from what I could
see whenever I came to visit. Perhaps I can
follow in the footsteps of my father, just not
from a business aspect. Friends and family
members alike always comment on our
similarities. I hear all the time that I conduct
myself in the same ways as my father.
During my young days, I would try to
separate myself and try to become my own
individual, but its hard to deny something
that youve inherited from your father. Sonow I am taking on that challenge. I am
making that vow to make changes in the
lives of anybody that I encounter during my
lifetime. My father hasnt passed the torch
down to me exactly, but I think that I am just
going to take it and run with it anyway. By
my actions and deed, people will know who
my father is.
Dad, you have done well for yourself. I
know you have made differences in the livesof many people including minenow you
can live it up for the rest of your life.
Enjoy your retirement!

Dr. Nashs Dental CornerDr. Jack Nash
has been practicing
dentistry for over 35years. He is a graduate
of the University
of Michigan Dental
School. He also has
been an adjunct
faculty member at
Delta College and
is currently a Fellow of the American
Academy of General Dentistry and a
recent graduate of the prestigious Council
on Innovative Dentistry.
To ask Dr. Nash dental questions write
to him at: Dr. Jack W. Nash, PO Box
1442, Saginaw MI 48607 or email him
at [email protected]. All opinions
discussed in these articles are those of
Dr. Nash; treatment options should be
discussed with an individuals personal
dentist.Do I really need to floss?
Dear Dr. Nash: I hate to floss and I find
it cumbersome....so do I really need to floss?
Yes. Floss removes plaque and food particles
that stick to teeth and gums in between teeth, polishes tooth surfaces, and controls bad breath.
Plaque is a sticky layer of material containing
bacteria that accumulates on teeth, including
places where toothbrushes cant reach. This can
lead to gum disease. By flossing your teeth daily,
you increase your chances of keeping them for
a lifetime and decrease the possibility of getting
periodontal (gum) disease and tooth decay.
Flossing is the single most important weapon
against plaque, perhaps more important than the
toothbrush. A toothbrush cleans the tops and
sides of your teeth. Dental floss cleans between
them. Some people use waterpicks, but I believe
floss is still the best choice. Many people just
dont spend enough time flossing and many
have never been taught to floss properly. When
you visit your dentist or hygienist, ask to be
shown how.
Does smoking/tobacco cause damage tomy mouth and teeth?
Dear Dr. Nash: I have been a smoker for
many years and I have noticed that my
mouth seems dry and my gums are sore.
Does tobacco harm my mouth and teeth? If you smoke or chew, you have a greater
risk for gum disease and oral cancer. Men
are affected twice as often as women, and 95
percent of oral cancers occur in those over 40
years of age.
The most frequent oral cancer sites are
the tongue, the floor of the mouth, soft palate
tissues in back of the tongue, lips and gums.
If not diagnosed and treated in its early
stages, oral cancer can spread, leading to
chronic pain, loss of function, facial and oral
disfigurement following surgery and even
death. More than 8,000 people die each year
from oral and pharyngeal (throat) diseases.
If you use tobacco, it is important to see a
dentist frequently for cleanings and to ensure
your mouth remains healthy. Your general
dentist can perform a thorough screening for
oral cancer during regular office visits.
