June 2016 | First Presbyterian Church of Deerfield
The Messenger
Daring to be Yourself Sometimes the months of summer change our ordinary schedules enough
that we can slow down and reflect upon our place in the world. Summer
can be a good time to listen to the yearning of your heart, to contemplate
your place in the universe. You do that, right?
If you do, and I do recommend it, contemplate this---By the love of God for
you, and by God’s own wisdom about what was good for the creation—
God made you to be a creature after God’s own likeness. More than any
other created being, humanity was made to be a reflection of who God is.
We’re not gods, surely that is clear, but we are made to be a mirror
reflection of God. When others look at us, they should still be able to see
God’s reflection.
The Apostle Paul writes in his famous 1 Corinthians, chapter 13, “Now we see
in a mirror dimly, then we shall see face to face; now we know in part, but
then shall I know, even as also, I am known.”
As our lives move forward into their inevitable end, may you find a way in
this sweet lifetime to “be yourself”---not just a self-centered “selfing”, but a
self that has in character, demeanor and practice that reflects God’s true
character of steadfast love and justice making. May you be yourself as a
true reflection of God’s love.
Have a wonderful summer. May each day give you new revelation of who
in God’s love for you and for the world, you are.
See you in church!
Pastor Suzan

…26 Then God said, "Let Us make humanity in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let
them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the
earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." 27 God created man in His own
image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed
them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule
over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the
earth."… Genesis 1:26-28
NOMINATIONS SEASON
Each year, our congregation chooses leaders from among its faithful membership to serve
in particular offices of the church. Elders and deacons are spiritual leaders. Elders serve in
the governance of the church. Deacons serve in compassionate ministries.
Qualities needed in officers include:
* Observed Commitment to the Church
* Leadership skills (ability to organize/delegate, complete tasks, work with others)
* Lifestyle (Christian expression of faith, hope and love)
* Dedication (enduring faithfulness to FPCD)
* Compassion
* Communication skills and abilities
Please offer names of people whom you believe the Nominations Committee should
consider for officer. Nominations can be placed in the offering plate or nominations
collections box. Or you may send your nominations to Susan Furmanski
NW Quadrant News
As June opens, the conversations with stakeholders in the NW Quadrant (that’s the area that
includes the church properties, retail facing Waukegan Road, the Village Hall and Library) have
been in regular biweekly conversation since February. A remarkable cohesiveness and
collaborative vision is emerging from this conversation. We are finding ways to share and to vision
a future that makes room and beauty for all parties involved. There will be no road through our
West parking, but we are looking toward a changed configuration there and more shared parking
toward the south. We anticipate a new entrance into the south municipal lot (owned by the
Village) that will change traffic flow some, but begin to move us toward a more efficient use of
space and the possibility of shared beauty. Safety remains a priority, as does neighborly
cooperation.
The Session, your elected governing body, is studying the details of a forming plan. Do anticipate
more news and opportunities to talk as the plans come increasingly together. If you have
questions, please contact Pastor Hawkinson at [email protected].
Church & Money Matters
Church Matters - Time
I was rushing through dinner to head to a committee
meeting when one of my daughters asked me, “why
do you spend so much time at church?”. It was a
simple question, but the answer could not be
simplistic.
I responded that I felt a calling, an inner drive that
showed me that my contributions mattered not only to
the committee, but to the overall vision of where we
as a congregation wanted to be, but also where the
Church needed to be. A quizzical look prompted
more explanation. I said, “Jesus came into the world
to save us, to provide a path for us. He told us to serve
and spread the word. It did not mean send money to
allow us to sit back and let others do the work, it
meant follow his example, such as washing the feet of
the disciples.”
Turning the question back on Jess, I asked her what
the most meaningful time in confirmation was. She
replied the learning was great, but it was in the service
projects that she felt like she was truly making a
difference in people’s lives, especially working with
PADS.

Time Talent and Treasure Committee
So we must not grow weary
in doing good, for in due
time we will reap, if we do
not give up. So then,
whenever we have an
opportunity, let us do good
to all people, and
especially to those who
belong to the family of
faith. GALATIANS 6:9-10
We each only have a certain amount of time in this
life, how we decide to spend this time is a true
reflection of where our priorities and heart are.
We were recently reminded that our First Presbyteri-
an Church of Deerfield has roots that go back 140
years! Of course since then many churches have
come and gone, but FPCD endures. Being financial-
ly responsible plays a big part in that, and we again
have a balanced budget for 2016. Financially this
year is moving along pretty much as expected. Total
revenue for the first four months is $334,000 com-
pared to expenses of $292,000. We are slightly over
budget on building repairs and maintenance, a
continuing concern with an aging main building,
most of which is over fifty years old. We will be re-
viewing this as the year progresses. In the absence
of unforeseeable events, we anticipate finishing the
year on target with a breakeven result.
Our church is one of over 10,000 congregations
which comprise the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
The PCUSA is divided into 16 regional units called
Synods, which are further divided into 172 smaller
units called Presbyteries. Our Chicago Presbytery
includes about 100 churches with about 32,000
members. FPCD provides financial support to the
national organization through an annual “Per Capi-
ta” assessment. Our contribution for 2016 is $25,146
based on 762 members at $33.00 each. You will be
hearing more about this shortly. You may if you wish
help FPCD pay this obligation and Special “Per Cap-
ita” envelopes are being prepared. These funds
help support national and regional governance,
prepare candidates for ministry, train and support
interim pastors, care for retired ministers, as well as
other needs.
Please check out our impressive updated website.
In addition to useful church information, just click on
“Give Today” to manage your FPCD financial sup-
port. We encourage use of the convenient Bank
Direct Bill-Pay procedure, where you request the
bank to send checks to the church for either one-
time or recurring donations, saving the expense of
credit card transactions.
Thank you so much for your continuing support!

Mission Work Graduation Time For Dreamers
In 2000 FPCD partnered with First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest
and the Foundation of the College of Lake County to adopt a
group of kindergarten students in North Chicago with the pledge
to provide them with academic, social, cultural, and family
support, including financial assistance for attending college. The
local program is affiliated with the national I Have A Dream
program.
Over the years, some Dreamers moved or dropped out and others
were added. As they neared high school graduation there were
28 active Dreamers. Of these, 27 graduated high school, 25 started
college, and 24 are still enrolled in college – except for 2
graduates.
In December 2105, Yesenia Fernandez received her associates
degree from CLC in culinary arts/hospitality and is in the
work force.
In May 2016, Eric Rogers graduated from Marquette with a
degree in communications/advertising and will begin an internship this June in New York City.
Also in May 2015, 2 CLC students received their associates degree and are planning to transition to a four-
year college:
Lamonte Brown will study business at UIC. Monica Luna will study social work at De Paul.
The majority of Dreamers are in four-year schools planning to graduate in 4 to 4.5 years, so next spring we
expect to celebrate many more graduations. Schools being attended include Northwestern, Illinois, Bradley,
Boston University, Lake Forest College, Dominican, NIU, Marquette, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Knox, Agnes Scott,
Albany State, EIU, and Illinois State.
Graduates, Dreamers, and their families were honored at a graduation dinner at FPCD on May 19.
FPCD will host a Soles 4 Souls shoe drive this June in cooperation with Brighton Collectibles
at Old Orchard. Collection boxes will be placed at church entrances beginning in June
and your participation is greatly appreciated.
Soles for Souls was founded in 2006 by Wayne Elsey in the aftermath of the Tsunami that hit
South East Asia. Like many, Wayne saw the devastation and wanted to help. Soles 4
Souls is a non profit organization that is dedicated to fighting the impact of poverty
through the distribution of shoes to people all over the world who do not have shoes.
The goal is to collect 1200 shoes.

Senior High Junior High
Senior High families will sponsor a bake
sale before and after the June 5 senior
high mission trip commissioning at
the 10:00 am service. This sale will
feature amazing homemade cookies
and treats and will raise funds for
supplies for the summer mission trip to the Yucatan
Peninsula in Mexico. Stop by and treat yourself!
Forty one Senior High youth and chaperones will
travel to the Yucatan Peninsula for this year’s mission
trip. Thom Cunningham and the chaperones are
looking forward to a meaningful service
experience. Past participants have called this
experience “life changing.” The Commissioning
Service is June 5th. Please keep them in your
prayers!

Children’s Ministry
On Friday May 6th, a Junior High Fellowship event was
held. The kids enjoyed a group dinner, an energetic and
challenging scavenger hunt throughout the church, and
an ice cream sundae bar under the
leadership of new Junior High Summer
Intern Dean Scopelliti.
Dean is a lifelong member of First
Presbyterian Church of Deerfield and
an active participant in the junior and
senior high programs. Dean will serve
as a wonderful role model for all of our
youth.
Summer Sunday School Sure to be a “Whirl” of fun as our kids explore our faith
story with the help of the “Whirl” Kids. Each week
participants will watch a short animated video in which
the “Whirl Kids” explore how to practice their faith.
Gatherings will include: a Bible story, video, games, crafts,
and other activities to help bring meaning to the stories of
our faith for our kids.
Following the children’s sermon, our summer intern will
lead the group to the Family Room (room 17) where all
the adventure begins. Parents can pick up their kids
following worship. Each week we will need shepherds to
help in the classroom so please consider volunteering by
placing your name on the sign-up sheet in the classroom.
Summer Family Adventure Camp
Parents with kids 10 years of age and younger are invited
to this summer program that combines faith formation and
family time. Each outing consists of a gathering at a
special location where we will have dinner and explore
God's creation, while relaxing and enjoying each other's
company.
This nontraditional approach to the old fashioned
vacation Bible school was very successful last year and we
are hoping to add to our numbers. There is a one time $50
fee which helps to cover most of the costs for excursions
as well as dinners. Our schedule is:
July 12- A visit to Lake Michigan
July 19- The Eagles Nest
July 26– Pantry

Updated Church Photo
Directory Needs You!
Watch for sign up information for a new FPCD
photo directory. The directory is an invaluable tool
for helping the congregation keep connected
and it is not complete without you.
There is no expense to have your picture in the
directory. You may buy pictures – perhaps as
Christmas gifts for the person that has everything!
Plan family gatherings for the photo shoot days so
that you can have your entire family’s picture
taken. PLUS do not forget your pets! They can be
included in your picture as well.
Soon you will be able to sign up for dates and
times on line and with paper and pen at the
Friendly Desk. The dates are: August 9, 10,11 and
September 15, 16, 17 and October 3. We will let
you know when the sign up opportunity begins
and how to access the internet sign up site.
Questions? Call Connie Wesley 847 821-8626.
Bring a Friend to
Sundae Sunday –
June 5th
What better way to show off our
fun and “sweet” side than sharing
with friends hot dogs, chips and
ice cream sundaes with all the
toppings! We will be once again entertained by
the Hummers and Strummers. Plan on staying after
the second service and meet and greet new and
long time friends!
Samaritan Counseling Center
To Open in Deerfield
The North Shore Samaritan Counseling Center will
soon open a counseling office in the First
Presbyterian Church of Deerfield facility.
The Samaritan Center is a professional counseling
center integrating psychotherapy and spirituality in
their counseling, education and consulting services.
They offer hope, healing and restoration to
wholeness in a confidential manner that is
professional, ethical, caring and accessible to all.
Staff therapists are licensed, certified and
theologically informed. Samaritan Counseling
Center is accredited by The Samaritan Institute in
Denver.
Samaritan Counseling Center adds a layer of
caregiving to the care ministries provided by FPCD.
The addition of licensed professional counseling
extends the pastoral care and counseling we can
provide to church members and the community. The
Samaritan Center provides assessment, counseling
and consulting services for a fee, using a sliding-
scale fee structure for those with lower income. They
serve adults, adolescents, children, couples and
families.
Confidential Deerfield counseling will take place in
our Room 14, the Stephen Ministry Room, downstairs
in our new wing. Offices also exist in host churches
across the North Shore with administrative offices
based in Winnetka.
More information on Samaritan Center is available at
www.northshoresamaritan.org or 847-446-6955.

Session Happenings
The governing body of every PCUSA (Presbyterian Church of the United States of America) is called a Session.
The Session is made up of elected officers called elders. “Elder” comers from a Greek word “presbuteros” that
means “a mature person having seasoned judgment.” Elders are elected by majority from the congregation and
serve 3 years at a time.
This month the matters that were deliberated and decided by the elders of your Session included:
Confirmands attended session and had conversation with the Elders on their faith journey. A motion was
made and approved to receive the following confirmands into membership at First Presbyterian Church
Deerfield.
Madeleine O’Donnell
Abigail Knaus
Olivia Vani
Stephen Samson
Zachary Kehlert was also part of the discussion and will be confirmed at a later date
Confirmands and their parents shared in a communion service followed by a reception to welcome them to
our church family.
Finance reports revenue and expenses for April showing revenues (pledges and other) 1% below budget.
Additionally a notice to remind folks to pay their per capita will be sent out in June.
Councils were urged to take a Fellowship hour slot in the fall with snacks and materials to feature their council.
Outreach distributed a draft Connection brochure that highlights key connection areas available to the
membership including Church Life phone app, website content and Facebook.
Voluntary contributions from members and friends of FPCD for continuation of the Internship of Lawrence
Sharrett have been pledged. The internship was funded from General Pledges through May 2016. Lawrence
serves as lay worship leader, teacher for JH TNT, various mission projects and assisting with visitation in homes
and to the hospital bound.
Lawrence and Courtney will be leaving for a mission project in Bulgaria on May 31 and will be back on
July 17. They will be hosting a special Bulgarian Coffee Fellowship upon their return.
Personnel reported on the next phase of transition for our support staff. Dilyanka Chardaklieva and Jori
Maguire (temporary book keeper and office manager) assisted in the interim but are no longer employed
with our church.
Personnel is interviewing candidates for a full time Office Manager/Bookkeeper.
Douglas Coulter, a book keeper/accountant, who is an expert in the church’s financial system (ACS)
is assisting with transition and streamlining financial systems and workflows. He is in the office on
Wednesday and Friday.
Kathy Knezevic is serving as temporary Office Manager. Her first project is updating the church
calendar and setting up procedures for adding items to the calendar.
PADS at our site is completed for the summer. Prayers were asked for identification of a headquarters
location for this important ministry to the homeless in our community.
Christian Beginnings informed that full time summer camp will start in June.
More than 100 surveys have been received. Session is reviewing for discussion in June.
NW Quadrant discussions continue with alignment reached with area stakeholders to not have a road
through the church parking lot in the interest of safety. Next step is for report to go back to Deerfield planning
commission with inclusion of key criteria (such as safety for CB pick up and drop off, etc.). Session to review
and align on criteria by June session meeting.
Deerfield is planning a right in/out entrance to the South Parking lot in conjunction with the Deerfield
road construction.
More info can be found on the Church website and Deerfield city website.
