DAY 3SACrED VALLEY: OLLANTA, MArAS, MOrAYBreakfast at the hotel. In the morning transfer to Ol-lantaytambo (20 minutes) and visit to its extraordinary fortress, a good example of the military architecture during the Inca times. The massive, highly-finished granite blocks at the top are worth the climb to see. Very interesting is also the old town itself, where time seems to have stopped. For lunch you will be head-ing to a special place off the main road, off a second-ary road, onto a dirt and rock strewn path wending between tall trees and a gurgling stream … Hacienda Huayoccari: a mansion dating back to the seventeenth century that today houses a vast collection of folk art, colonial paintings, ceremonial goblets known as keros, pottery, porcelain and Huamanga stone relics. In the afternoon transfer to the amazing salinas on the pla-teau of Maras. These salt mines have been used since the Inca. People channel the salt water that bubbles to the surface from a spring called Qoripujio towards men made wells. From the exposure to the sun, the wa-ter evaporates and the salt remains on the surface to be transported later to the market to be sold. The view of this complex of nearly 3000 wells is spectacular. A short ride will take us to Moray, a site that contains unusual Inca ruins consisting of several enormous terraced circular depressions, the largest of which is about 30 meters deep. The purpose of these de-pressions is uncertain, but they were probably used to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops. Transfer back to the hotel and time to refresh and relax before dinner that will be followed by a very entertaining circus show with acrobats.

Lunch at the Hacienda Huayoccari. Dinner in restau-rant with circus show and overnight at the hotel.

We travel along-side the impressive valley of the Urubamba river with its deep gorges and tropical vegetation (1.45’). Arrival and short ride by bus (20 minutes) to the majestic ruins of Machu Picchu, known as the “Lost City of the Incas” since it remained hidden from the West until discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. It was built in the fifteenth century, and is attributed to the Inca Pachacutec. The archeological complex is divided into two zones that are contained within approximately twenty hectares. On the sides of the mountain, you can see up to four meters high agricultural terraces. Several plazas and buildings, the most important being the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana or solar clock and calendar, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Main Temple and the Condor Sector, make up the urban sector. There is also an impressive monolith of carved stone, three meters high and seven meters wide at the base, named the Sacred Stone. Machu Picchu is not only a price-less archeological site; it is also associated with rich animal and plant life. In 1983, UNESCO placed it on the World Cultural and Natural Heritage Lists. DAY 5CUSCO: NEArBY rUINS AND CITY TOUrBreakfast at the hotel. In the morning we will begin the visit with the nearby fortress of Sacsayhuaman, a huge building on three levels from which you will have a spectacular view over the city of Cusco. Con-tinuation to the ceremonial centers of Quenco, Tambo Machay and Puca Pucara. returning to Cusco, visit the city on foot: the ancient capital of the Inca Empire has been declared World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1983 and is without a doubt one of the most important destinations in Peru. There are Inca buildings among its cobble-stoned streets, like the koricancha and the palace of Inca roca as well as Andean baroque structures from the Colonial Period like the Cathedral and the Church of the Company of Christ. In the pic-turesque neighborhood of San Blas the best artisans have set up their workshops. Free afternoon dedicated to walking around this enchanting city and cocktail at sunset overlooking Plaza de Armas. At night, dinner in the courtyard of the museum of Pre-Columbian Art, the MAP Café. Upon entering the central courtyard of the museum, any stereotypes about dreary museum cafés are forgotten, as the restaurant appears before your eyes as a beautifully-constructed glass cube, slightly elevated from the rock and cobblestone courtyard. In the evening, the interior of the cube is lit by an abun-dance of candles further adding to both the elegance and welcoming nature of the site. The warm candle lighting, the intimate number of tables, and live Andean harp music set the stage for a unique evening of fine dining. A fantastic way to say goodbye to Cusco.

Lunch in restaurant. Dinner at exclusive MAP Café restau-rant and overnight at the hotel.
