Main Functions
1)Carries oxygen from lungs to cells
2)Carries carbon dioxide from cells to lungs
3)Carries nutrients from intestines to cells
4)Carries cellular wastes from cells to kidneys
Types of Blood Vessels
Arteries
-Carry blood away from the Heart
- Carries oxygenated blood
Veins
-Carry blood to the Heart
- Carries deoxygenated blood
Capillaries
-connect arteries to veins
Parts of The Heart
The Atria (or Atriums)
-Receiving Chambers
The Ventricles
-Pumping Chambers
The Valves
-Prevents backflow
The Septum
-Divides the Heart
Heart The heart is a hollow, muscular organ that
pumps blood. It consists of two pumps that
lie side by side.
These pumps relax when taking in blood and
contract as they send out blood. The left side
of the heart is a stronger pump than the right.
Heart pumps: ~ 70 times per min [90 000
times per day]
Heart beat: “lub” “dub” sound due to
closing of valves
The Heart
Composed of cardiac muscle tissue, nerve tissue and connective tissue
Frequency of heart beat depends on your physical activity level
Exercise increases the volume of blood pumped by the heart
Did you know… – Your circulatory system
is about 60,000 miles long
– Your heart beats more than 2.5 billion times in the average lifetime
– the human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet.
ANATOMY OF THE HEART

PATHWAY OF BLOOD
Think Pair Share: Make a list the
structures that a red blood cell would
pass through when moving in and out
of your heart.
PATHWAY OF BLOOD
1) a. superior vena cava or 1)b. inferior vena cava
2) right atrium
3) right AV valve (between atrium and ventricle)
4) right ventricle
5) right semilunar valve (pulmonary valve)
6) pulmonary artery (goes to lungs)
PATHWAY OF BLOOD
7) pulmonary vein
8) left atrium
9) left AV valve
10) left ventricle
11) left semilunar valve (aortic valve)
12) aorta

listening to?
The Composition of Blood
The Plasma (Fluid) makes up
55% of the blood volume.
