In thinking about what to write for
this issue of The Encounter I confess to having a bit of writer’s block. Sitting at my desk, attempting to clear my mind by looking over the hundreds of volumes on my bookshelf I began to see a wall of knowledge both from a secular as well as theological perspective. Many of these books I read long ago, others are reference works that were never intended to be read cover to cover, but merely to be cited for research. Some of the books on my shelf have never even been opened. Not to say they never will be, but at present they remain unread.
While looking at the library God has blessed me with my eyes fixed upon the name of one man whose books and ministry greatly impacted and influenced my ministry and thinking. We both spoke and wrote so profoundly but also so simply. His words were both a marvel to the distinguished and interesting to the novice. The church that he planted grew at an astonishing rate in one of the most unlikely of places. It is fair to say that this man was used by God to shape and influence a generation of Christian leaders.
So, what’s this man doing now? Not too much. He lost his church, his church planting network, and much of his sphere of influence. I went from hearing something about him every day to having to dig around just to find anything current about him.
What happened? There were no affairs, no addictions, and nothing else we so often hear about once powerful but no defunct ministers. There were some charges of pride and intimidation surrounding his ministry. Nothing that a court would become involved with or anything he could face prison time for. In short, what happened was this man is a sinner. Though he is a sinner saved by grace he was and is still prone to temptation and carnality. No matter who we are, no matter what we achieve, no matter how much God is using us we are never beyond the reach and influence of sin. That’s why the Scriptures give us this warning in 1 Corinthians 10:12, “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.” Satan fell, our first parents fell, and we too can fall into sin. No matter who you are, no matter how long you’ve been standing. “Take heed, lest you fall.” Kyle Noffsinger

REST Are you exhausted today? Are you taking pills for energy to get through the day or are you on a nervous high and need something to slow you down? Perhaps what your body is really crying for its rest. Is there rest for anyone in this tension-filled world? As the disciples returned from a missionary journey, they were elated with their success. They gave glowing reports of how God had worked. Jesus was glad to hear their accounts, but he new that they needed physical rest after their arduous journey. He invited them to come rest with him in a quiet place. We, too, need to refresh ourselves to maintain physical and spiritual strength. Our schedules ar demanding. They drain our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual life. God’s Holy Spirit give us strength for his schedule for us I believe God plans for us to include times of rest and relaxation in our schedule. If the disciples needed rest, so do we. Our rest times may consist of a vacation where we can rest and relax, a change of environment, or simply a respit right where we are. Time spent with the Lord brings renewal and refreshment.
