The Cell Cycle5A

How eukaryotic cells divide to

make new cells

Page 2: The Cell Cycle 5A

Just like people have phases of development,

Page 3: The Cell Cycle 5A

Cells have phases too.

Page 4: The Cell Cycle 5A

In somatic (body) cells, a parent cell produces 2 daughter cells.

The purpose of mitosis is for growth and repair of tissue.

Page 5: The Cell Cycle 5A

Three Phases or Stages

1. Interphase2. M (Mitosis) phase3.Cytokinesis

Page 6: The Cell Cycle 5A

Interphase

Page 7: The Cell Cycle 5A

Interphase DNA and organelles replicate

Cell spends most of its life in this stage

Page 8: The Cell Cycle 5A
Page 9: The Cell Cycle 5A

Stages of InterphaseG1 (growth)

S (synthesis)

G2 (growth)

Page 10: The Cell Cycle 5A

G1 (growth)

• Aka First Gap• The cell grow larger• Makes proteins and

organelles

Page 11: The Cell Cycle 5A

S (synthesis)

• DNA replication occurs - genetic material is duplicated so each daughter cell contains the same amount of genetic material as the parent cell

• Chromosomes duplicate to form sister chromatids

Page 12: The Cell Cycle 5A
Page 13: The Cell Cycle 5A
Page 14: The Cell Cycle 5A

G2 (growth)

• Aka Second Gap• More growth & protein

synthesis occurs• preparing for cell division

Page 16: The Cell Cycle 5A

M phase

• Aka Mitosis • Shortest of all phases• Division of the

nucleus

Page 17: The Cell Cycle 5A

Mitosis

Nucleus divides Duplicated DNA is divided

into two new nuclei

Stages of Mitosis

ProphaseMetaphaseAnaphaseTelophase

Page 21: The Cell Cycle 5A

Prophase

Page 22: The Cell Cycle 5A

Prophase

• Nuclear membrane breaks down• Genetic material (chromosomes)

enlarges, thickens &condenses• In the cytoplasm, Centrioles

migrate to opposite ends of poles•Microtubules attach to centrioles

Page 23: The Cell Cycle 5A

Prophase

Page 24: The Cell Cycle 5A

Metaphase

Page 25: The Cell Cycle 5A

Metaphase

• Duplicated chromosomes line up on the equator of the cell

• Spindles attach to chromosomes at the centromere & pull the sister chromatids into a line in the center of the cell

Page 26: The Cell Cycle 5A

Metaphase

Page 27: The Cell Cycle 5A

Anaphase

Page 28: The Cell Cycle 5A

Anaphase

• Shortest phase• As the spindle contracts,

the sister chromatids separate and are pulled to opposite sides of the cell

Page 29: The Cell Cycle 5A

Anaphase

Page 30: The Cell Cycle 5A

Telophase

Page 31: The Cell Cycle 5A

Telophase

• New nuclear membranes form to separate the genetic material

• Chromosomes shrink• Spindle breaks apart

Page 32: The Cell Cycle 5A

Telophase

Page 33: The Cell Cycle 5A

Mitosis

Page 34: The Cell Cycle 5A

Cytokinesis

Page 35: The Cell Cycle 5A

Cytokinesis

• Occurs AFTER telophase and BEFORE interphase

• Cytoplasm divides• Forms 2 new cells

Page 36: The Cell Cycle 5A

What happens when cells divide at an uncontrollable rate?

Cancer is caused by the loss of cell’s ability to control division. Cancer cells divide uncontrollably.

• Tobacco•Radiation exposure•Viral infections (HPV)•Genetics
