I recently heard a delightful expression that a father in eastern European uses to praise
their child. He says: “I kiss your mother!” It is a way of thanking his wife for her success
in helping to raise such a wonderful child. Of course, all parents take delight in the success
of their children. But many mothers and fathers make the mistake of measuring their self-
worth entirely in terms of how well their children do. If their son or daughter succeeds, the
parent succeeds. If their child fails, then they, too, are failures.
If Mary, the mother of Jesus, saw her self-worth solely in terms of the accomplishments of her son, hers would
be a very large ego — her Son is the savior of the world, after all. But Mary possessed a more personal and inspiring
understanding of her purpose in life. We honor Mary not because of what her son did, but because of what she did.
Mary heard the word of God and observed it. And that is why all generations will call her “blessed.”
Mary showed us how to remain in God's love and be empowered by God's promise, whatever may come our
way. That is why we set aside a special day in August to remember Mary’s life and honor her for her place in
heaven. In so doing we are invited to ponder how available we've been to share in God’s work during the past year.
Have we carried our crosses with humility and patience? Have we embraced all of the joyful, sorrowful, luminous,
and glorious moments of our lives as part of God’s unfolding will for us, as Mary did?
It is likely that we have not been as successful as we would have hoped. Nevertheless our Father proudly
proclaims: “I kiss your mother!” God loves us as a parent loves a child. And Mary has gifted her daughters and sons
with the wisdom to be truly successful and happy.
