Cathedrals, Basilicas, and Shrines If you happen to be a visitor of churches when you travel, you may have puz-zled over these terms. Interestingly, the word Cathedral can be traced to the Latin cathedra, which means “bishops chair,” so there we observe this spe-cial chair is on a raised platform within the sanctuary. To understand Basili-cas, we return in thought to the ancient Roman Empire; for the Romans, the word signified a building with a tall ceiling and three long aisles which could be used as a court, a public meeting place, or even a market. When the Em-peror Constantine legalized Christianity, many bishops began to model their churches on this very style, with the altar on the far end of the main aisle. What’s important—and wonderful—about a Shrine is that they can be near-ly anything as long as they are regarded seriously and with reverence. That special box in your home that holds a relic is a shrine. A statue of a saint in your yard, perhaps the Blessed Mother, St. Joseph, or St. Anthony, is a also a shrine. And if you haven’t yet done so, consider creating your own shrine in your home, on your farm, or in a beautiful place on your lawn. Not everyone knows that Father Gregory has a shrine made of fieldstones on his 13 acre wildlife refuge, and another one is in his rectory, which is an entire room where he can pray in silence for all of us in the presence of his relics. Father Gregory, like many of us, knows our homes and families can be strengthened and protected by shrines.
