FORMER FIRE CHIEF SHOT (Salamanca Republican Press, 6/4/1935)
SALAMANCA-Addison J. Crockett, about sixty-five years old, a former
fire chief of Salamanca and recently one of the fire Commissioners, was
fatally shot at his home at 136 River Street, Monday afternoon.
A relative expressed belief Mr. Crockett was shot accidentally while
examining the gun a 22-caliber revolver with long barrel he had purchased
recently for his collection of old guns. He had been sitting on the porch
of his home with Harry Pierce, his brother-in-law, but a short time
before, and went upstairs after saying he would put the gun away, it was
stated. He was shot in the heart, Coroner Bourne said. A formal
certificate will be rendered later.
Besides his widow, Mr. Crockett leaves two daughters: Mr. Paul Yeager
of Cleveland and Mrs. Clifford Case of Eden, and a son Bruce Crockett of
Brooklyn.

document eight family genealogical lines that are now available on the
Internet at casegenealogy.webs.com. Mrs. Case was also an expert in
crafts whether it be crocheting, embroidering, or knitting.
During her marriage, Mrs. Case traveled extensively throughout the

HELEN B. RANDOLPH
1932 - 2020
OLEAN - Helen B. Randolph passed away Wednesday (July 29, 2020) at the
home of her daughter, Susan Randolph James. She fought a long, hard fight
with breast cancer for the last three years.
She was born on Sept 14, 1932, to George and Flossie Barlow Case. On

friends," Leigh and Mary. She had such a large heart that she would do
anything for anyone. She always put other's needs far before her own. She
could often times be found at the ball fields, soccer fields or any place
that her grandchildren would be playing a game. The "Helenator" as she was
affectionately known, was truly loved and admired.
Helen is survived by her children, Barbara (Ricky) Rupp, Jim Randolph,
Nancy (Doug) Hamilton, Ken (Sue) Randolph, Patricia (Gilbert) Colbey,
Michael (Amy) Randolph, Susan (Mark) James and Andrew (Jennifer) Randolph;
a daughter in-law, Linda Randolph; 34 grandchildren; 51 great-
grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and one other great-great-
grandchild due later in August. She will be missed by her best friend in

THOMAS E. RANDOLPH
1958-2020

Pollock: Randolph’s death ends a career of writing, crusading
Feb 20, 2020
It’s been an unprecedented nine days in my long career at the Times
Herald. Over that span I’ve written three columns about the passing of
acquaintances. First it was Jim Barillo, area golf instructor
extraordinaire, then Don Haskins, a skilled compositor at the TH for 44
years and, today, Thom Randolph.
My relationship with Thom was different from the other two, as he
worked a decade for me as an intern as well as the paper’s motorsports
writer. He died unexpectedly last Friday, at age 61, in his home at
Mebane, N.C.
We met in 1987 and his background fascinated me. A native of Cuba, who
graduated from Bolivar Central School, he had a degree in journalism/mass
communications from St. Bonaventure but was managing the Pizza Hut in
Springville.
Thom was desperate to get into the newspaper business and while we
didn’t have a full-time opening in the TH sports department, I hired him
as an admittedly over-qualified intern knowing the bonus would be his
interest in the local auto racing scene and his love of writing about it.
44
Indeed, his affection for the area’s stock car tracks led to his
creating a seasonally-produced, mini-tabloid called Twin Tiers
Motorsports.
In 1996, Thom moved to Florida starting a truck-driving career for
three different grocery suppliers while free-lancing for the Orlando
Sentinel covering high school sports.
He returned to the Southern Tier in 2005 and had a two-year stretch
driving for Stroehmann Bakeries before being hired as a driver for
Walmart, a job he held until his passing.
TOM DONAHUE, a former Times Herald managing editor and fellow resident
of Thom’s hometown, recalled, “I’d run into Thom now and again. He was
always happy to see you ... always greeted you with a big smile. If he was
with someone, he’d introduce me as ‘Cuba’s most famous citizen,’ then show
that big crooked grin and give me a wink.
“He always wanted so badly to be a full-time sports writer at the
Times Herald. He managed one of the Sugar Creek stores in Olean and I’m
sure he was a devoted employee, but you knew he’d rather be writing. He
finally gave up the dream when he became a driver for Walmart. And he
loved it, or so he’d tell me each time we met up ... good pay, manageable
runs and lots of time off. I’ll bet he was one of their best and most
loyal drivers.”
FROM MY perspective, the only times I ever saw Thom without a smile
was when he talked about his step-daughter, Shannon Pepper.
The offspring of his wife, Linda, Pepper died at age 37 in a fire at her
Cuba apartment in February of 2015. But, two years prior to that, she was
the victim of a brutal case of domestic abuse at the hands of her former
live-in boyfriend.
He used a DVD player and candlestick holder to beat her. Pepper was
comatose for months as she suffered multiple head injuries, broken ribs, a
brain bleed, a shattered jaw, bruised eyes and lips so badly bitten that
she almost lost them.
As a result, Thom and Linda became fierce advocates of Brittany’s Law,
a statute in honor of Geneva resident Brittany Passalacqua and her mother
who were fatal victims of domestic violence in 2009. The law, which
stipulates a registry for felons convicted of such abuse, has been bogged
down in the New York State Assembly for years.
After Pepper’s passing, Thom became the family’s de facto spokesperson
in both the broadcast and print media, campaigning for the Assembly to
address and pass Brittany’s Law. It became his life’s focal point.
When I last saw Thom, it was two years ago in the Bolivar-Richburg
football press box. We talked through halftime and before leaving he
looked back, cracked that smile and speculated that this time Brittany’s
Law would finally pass.

HARVEY L. CASE
1936-2020
PECULIAR - Harvey Lee Case, born May 9, 1936, in Olean, NY, passed
away peacefully June 14, 2020 at his home in Peculiar, MO.
Harvey lived his early life in Little Genesee, NY and attended the
nearby Bolivar Central High School. During these years, he was an eager
participant in many activities including band, choir, football,
basketball, baseball, and golf earning several awards and honors such as
the Babe Ruth award, selection to the All State Choir, Student Council
President, and a 4-year Letterman. After High School Harvey briefly
attended Alfred State College before joining the US Air Force where he
served 4 years at Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, MO, where he not
only reached the rank of Airman First Class, but also where he met his
wife of 60 years, Mary Lynn Case.
After the military, Harvey began a career in the field of data
collection and insurance reporting. Harvey initially worked for Retail
Credit (now Equifax Services) for 25 years before working his way up to
eventually start his own business, Case Profile Services, where he, with
Mary as his partner, contracted his services nationwide, interviewing many
well-known individuals in business, entertainment, and sports. It was
through this time that Harvey added repertoire to his incredible gift of
storytelling.
Harvey had a true passion for people in his family, friends, and the
community around him. He coached countless baseball, basketball, and
softball teams for Catholic schools and other youth organizations; he was
a member and elder at South Broadland Presbyterian Church where he also
sang in the choir; and he often showed his great sense of humor and knack
for warm conversation with everyone he met. He also loved KU sports and
rarely missed a Royals or Chiefs game.
Above all Harvey will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his
family. His wife and 4 children recall his doting love, constant
encouragement, and pride in their many activities from sports to music and
theater. His grandchildren benefited greatly from his active role in
their upbringing. In his final years he even had opportunity to enjoy
53
getting to know his great-grandchildren. He was also a proud uncle to
many nephews and nieces in whom he showed great interest.
Harvey is preceded in death by his father George; mother Flossie; and
brothers, Burdette, George, and Don. He is survived by his sister Helen
Randolph; wife Mary; children, Brian Case (Caroline), Sherryl Tripaldi
(Darin Thomas), Dennis Case (Megan), and Cindy Howe (Bob Farney);
grandchildren, Brandon, Alex (Kirsten), Caty (Jonathan), Dylan, Keleigh,
Haley (Shawn), Mandy, Tara, and Logan; and great grandchildren, Axel and
Ryleigh.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June
27th at 3pm at South Broadland Presbyterian Church at 7850 Holmes Rd.,
Kansas City, MO.
