CAN YOU HELP US TO TEACH THE CHILDREN SAFE ROAD BEHAVIOURS? IT COULD PREVENT AN INJURY OR EVEN SAVE A LIFE!
No matter how busy we are, there is always enough time to keep children safe. We teach the students about road safety at school, but at the end of the day, they will model what they see their mums and dads doing. Happily, the vast majority of grown-ups around our school do consistently model safe behaviours.
Here is part of a lesson about being a safe pedestrian. You can support us by reinforcing safe behaviours with your children. Travelling to and from school is a great opportunity to talk to your children about how they can keep safe on the roads. Please never teach the children the wrong thing by modelling unsafe behaviours, even when in a hurry. It’s when we are in a hurry, that many accidents happen.

‘Mufti for Michelago’ this Friday 19 June
FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Term 2 Week 8 15 June 2020
When Term 1 commenced this year, much of NSW was in crisis due to bushfires that ravaged communities. Indeed, sadly, some families suffered loss of life and property. Schools were closed, as bushfires threatened or destroyed buildings. We gave thanks that our school community remained safe. In Term 1, the NSW Primary Principals’ Association began organising an initiative, where schools not impacted by bushfires, could lend their support to other schools. At that time, we ‘raised our hand’ to help. John Purchase PS was buddied with Michelago Public School. Sadly, shortly afterwards, the Covid pandemic then interfered with our philanthropic plans.
As we return to a new ‘normal’ and try to re-establish lives, hopes and dreams, it may be a good time to think about something other than Covid-19. So, planning for a mufti (out-of-uniform) day for Michelago PS has begun! Michelago Public School is an integral part of the small village community of Michelago, situated 50 kilometres south of Canberra. It has 38 students. School principal, Claire Plummer, has conveyed these reflections to me:
Michelago families did not suffer as much from properties and homes destroyed due to the fires, although some properties had outlying infrastructure, such as fences and out-buildings damaged. The impact (of the bushfires) was strongest from the point of view of mental health and wellbeing; the trauma caused by such uncertainty and the gravity of the situation, with many families having to evacuate during this time.
Term 2 Week 8 15 June 2020
The Michelago community has suggested to us, that building a “lovely little garden area” would be a calming, peaceful project - something of beauty out of the chaos. We would like to support them in this project. Let’s help Michelago Public School build a rose garden, by holding a mufti (out-of-uniform) day for John Purchase PS students, this Friday 19th June. All gold coin donations will be donated to this initiative. Michelago Public School is pictured in these two images below.
Attendance at School Regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve his or her educational best and increase career and life options. We work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of our students. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children. It is concerning that many students are regularly arriving late to school, which is very disruptive to class routines. Please allow enough time in the mornings for your child to be at school, in time for the commencement of class, at 8:55am. Students who arrive after this time, must report to the office in the first instance, with a note of explanation from a parent (due to adult social distancing requirements in place). When students arrive late without explanation, our administrative staff will email parents concerned. Late arrivals are recorded as partial unexplained absences, unless an explanation is received. The importance of arriving at school on time:
• ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day • helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine • gives students time to greet their friends before class • reduces classroom disruption
Lost Property As parent access to the school has been restricted this term due, to adult social distancing measures, a selection of the students’ lost property will be brought to the Purchase Road footpath outside Gate 3, for parents to check. Parents are encouraged to look through the containers, when on display outside Gate 3.
Term 2 Week 8 15 June 2020
How to Access Your Child’s School Report Online Your child’s school report will be available online, at the end of this term, via the John Purchase Parent Portal (pictured below). Parents who have already registered in 2019, do not have to repeat the process. These prompts will assist the registration process: Step 1 – Access ‘Communication Notes and Forms’ from the JPPS website
Step 2 – Access ‘Parent Websites’ from the JPPS website
Step 3 – Access ‘Parent Portal for School Reports’ from the JPPS website
Term 2 Week 8 15 June 2020
Step 4 – Access ‘Get registered’ to set up your private account and password
Our School Expectations
This week’s expectation is:
Responsibility: Be punctual to school. Lessons begin at 8:55am.
Congratulations to the students who have demonstrated our school expectations of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY or who have tried to ASPIRE.
Term 2 Week 8 15 June 2020
Purchase Pride Badge (10 Purchase Prides)
When students receive ten Purchase Pride awards (pictured above), these should be left in Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the administration corridor. The ten awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name and current class. At this stage, Purchase Prides will continue to be presented in classrooms, as no assemblies are being held at 8:55am. Congratulations to the following recipients: Dhiya (3/4LJ), Tvishu R (4M), Luke B (1C), Max (1M), Harrison (1C), Neal (2N), Sehansa (4L), Justin (1C), Navithu (1M), Jacob (2M), Ellie M (2N), Florence L (3CR), Isabelle C (3S), Thomas W (1F), Ray (4L), Tvisha (4M)
What do I do with my Class Awards?
When a student has received ten green/white class awards (pictured above), they should be handed in to Mrs King’s ‘award shelf’ in the administration corridor. The ten class awards need to be bundled together and clearly labelled with the student’s name, current class and award level reached: 10 Class Awards = Bronze 20 = Silver 30 = Gold 40 = Bronze Medallion 50 = Silver Medallion 60 = Gold Medallion 75 = Platinum Medallion and Principal for the Day! A clear, snap lock bag is ideal for this purpose!
Term 2 Week 8 15 June 2020
Please note: following updated DoE guidelines received on 11 June, modified, special assemblies will be implemented this term. A brief, K-6 assembly (students only) will be held next Thursday 25 June to acknowledge our Silver and Gold Award winners. A Principal’s Morning Tea (students only) for Bronze Award winners, will be held on Tuesday 30 June (Week 10). Due to Covid restrictions, individual (not shared) morning tea refreshments, will be on offer. GOLD AWARD (30 CLASS AWARDS) Congratulations to: Mitchell W (4-O)

FROM THE CANTEEN Sushi - Good news! Sushi will be back on the menu from the beginning of Term 3.
Volunteers - Just a reminder that unfortunately we are not allowed volunteers back in the canteen at the moment. We are hoping this will change soon as we miss our lovely mums/nanas! We will let you know when this changes.
Popcorn - Unfortunately we have had to increase the price of popcorn again. We have had to change to a new brand of popcorn which is a more expensive brand as the Koala brand is no longer being made. Apologies for this increase but it is out of our hands.
