The Birka Warrior

The Birka Warrior focuses on the martial aspects of life in the Viking Age trading post of Birka, particularly its Garrison. The long-distance contacts of the warriors are refl ected through an extensive fi nd-materi-al, illustrating their work and worldview, and their relation to the con-temporary warriors of eastern and western Europe. Through studies of style and artefact distribution, Birka is set in an international context, revealing political and diplomatic contacts with such power-political centres as Kiev and Constantinople.

Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson is active at the Archaeological Research Laboratory. Within the projects Birka’s Fortifi cations and Strongholds and Fortifi cations in Central Sweden AD 400—1100, she participated in the archaeological research excavations at Birka from 1997—2004.
