Atpresent,mostofusnolongerknowhowtomaintainourownhealthandareeitheractivelyorpassively participatinginthedestructionoftheearth.Wehavebeentaughttomaintainthestructureofasocietythat valuestheacquisitionofwealthaboveallelse.Thispathcontinuestoseparateusfromeachotherandfrom everythingwithinnature.Manyofushavedecidedtorejectthisinpart,andareenvisioningaworldview thatacknowledgeshumanneedsandspirituality.Ayurvedaisahealthsysteminseparablefromitsspiritual foundation.Itsworldviewrecognizesthedivinitywithineachhumanbeingaspartofthedivineandits energies.Itplacesresponsibilityforhumankindtoactonhisorherhigherspiritualnatureandovercome thediseasebornoflust,greed,andignorance.
ThevastandcompletenatureofAyurvedarequiressystematictrainingbasedonitstraditionaltheoriesas wellasclinicalexperience.Keepingthisinmind,theneedforaspecificacademicandclassroom-training programforWesterncountriesbecameobvious). AyurvedaisnotaseparatedscienceapartfromtheVedicScriptures.It,ontheotherhand,isintegrated withinandpermeatedthroughouttheliteratureasthehealthsystemforthisbodyofknowledge.Asa science,Ayurvedacanbeintegratedintoanyotherreligionsinceitisbasedonnature’slawsandtheforces ofthecreatorthatliveswithineachoneofusregardlessofanycreed,race,orclass.Ayurvedasayswecameheretomasterourselves,andpartoflearningishealingandbecomingawareofwhoweare.
TheAyurvedaPhilosophy
Ayurveda,the"scienceoflife,"preventionandlongevityistheoldestandmostholisticmedicalsystem availableontheplanettoday.Itwasplacedinwrittenformover5,000yearsagoinIndiaandwassaidto beaworldmedicinedealingwithbothbodyandspirit.Beforetheadventofwriting,theancientwisdom ofthishealingsystemwasapartofthespiritualtraditionoftheSanatanaDharma(UniversalReligion),or VedicReligion.VedaVyasa,thefamoussage,ShaktaveshaavatarofVishnu,putintowritingthecomplete knowledgeofAyurveda,alongwiththemoredirectlyspiritualinsightsofself-realizationintoabodyof scripturalliteraturecalledtheVedasandtheVedicliteratures.

TheHistoryofAyurveda
Therewereoriginallyfourmainbooksofspirituality,whichincludedamongothertopics;health,astrology, business,government,army,poetry,andspirituallivingandbehavior.Thesebooksareknownasthefour Vedas;Rik,Sama,Yajur,andAtharva.TheRigVeda,acompilationofverseonthenatureofexistence,is theoldestsurvivingbookofanyIndo-Europeanlanguage(3000B.C.).TheRikVeda(alsoknownasRig Veda)referstothecosmologyknownasSankhya,whichliesatthebaseofbothAyurvedaandYoga, containsversesonthenatureofhealthanddisease,pathogenesisandprinciplesoftreatment.Amongthe RigVedasarefounddiscussionsofthethreedoshas;Vata,Pitta,andKapha-andtheuseofherbstoheal thediseasesofthemindandbodyandtofosterlongevity.TheAtharvaVedaliststheeightdivisionsof Ayurveda;InternalMedicine,SurgeryofHeadandNeck,OpthamologyandOtorinolaryngology,Surgery, Toxicology,Psychiatry,Pediatrics,GerontologyorScienceofRejuvenation,andtheScienceofFertility (thesearenotpracticedinAyurvedatodayintheWestunlessyouareaM.D.).TheVedicsagestookthe passagesfromtheVedicScripturesrelatingtoAyurvedaandcompiledseparatebooksdealingonlywith Ayurveda.Oneofthesebooks,calledtheAtreyaSamhita,istheoldestmedicalbookintheworld!The VedicBrahmanaswerenotonlypriestsperformingreligiousritesandceremonies,theyalsobecame Vaidyas(physiciansofAyurveda).Thesage-physician-surgeonsofthetimewerethesamesagesorseers, deeplydevotedholypeople,whosawhealthasanintegralpartofspirituallife.Itissaidthattheyreceived theirtrainingofAyurvedathroughdirectcognitionduringmeditation.Inotherwords,theknowledgeof theuseofvariousmethodsofhealing,prevention,longevity,andsurgerycamethroughDivinerevelation; therewasnoguessingortestingandharminganimals.Theserevelationsweretranscribedfromtheoral traditionintobookform,interspersedwiththeotheraspectsoflifeandspirituality.Whatisfascinatingis Ayurveda'suseofherbs,foods,aromas,gems,colors,yoga,mantras,lifestyle,andsurgery.Consequently, AyurvedagrewintoarespectedandwidelyusedsystemofhealinginIndia.Around1500B.C.Ayurveda wasdelineatedintoeightspecificbranchesofmedicine.ThereweretwomainschoolsofAyurvedaatthat time,Atreya-theschoolofphysicians,andDhanvantari-theschoolofsurgeons.Thesetwoschoolsmade Ayurvedaamorescientificallyverifiableandclassifiablemedicalsystem.
Ayurvedateachesushowtocreatebalanceinordertoattainperfecthealth.Thus,weareabletobring harmonytoourselvesandtothosearoundus.Asweunderstandourbody-mind-spiritconnectionweare abletoextendthespanoflifeandcreatelongevity.Themainpurposeofthisscienceistocreateself- understanding,toattainmastery,andtoknowourselves.Ayurvedaalsorecognizesthatourbodiesare constantlychangingandthatweliveinaworldofduality;ourjobistojoinwiththepartofusthatisalways there-theknower,theseer,theinfinitesource.Withpracticeandmasteryofourselveswebecomefreeof suffering.Andasweawakentoourtruepotential,wecreatefreedominourbodies.Ayurvedarecognizes thatwecametothisearthtorememberwhoweareandtofollowthatdharma,thatpurposewhichistolearn totakecareofthisphysicalexistence.Oncethatharmonyisestablished,webecomeconsciousof everythingthatthereis.
Ournatureisdivineandeverythingthatweneedtoknowisalreadyavailable;itisalreadywithinus.As welearntoopenthischannelthroughmeditation,everythingisgiven.TheDivineMotherhasgiven pharmacology;thereismedicineavailableforeverythingthatwedo.Whenwesupportourbodywith theseprinciples,weareopentotheunlimitedpossibilitiesandpotentialtoliveourlifeasweweretrulyare meanttobe.Whenwemissthetarget,weareabletowakeupanddoitagainuntilwebecomemasterof thevehicle.

Ayurveda
Aromatherapyistheartandscienceofusingessentialoilstobeautify,purify,rejuvenate,andenhance wellbeing.Thisancientsciencegoesback3,500yearsandwasusedintheEgyptian,Indian,Greek,Roman, andChinesecivilizationsandtheuseofessentialoilswasanintegralpartofthemedicinalsystemofthese cultures.
