Editorial Ramblings Hope you’ve all had a good Christmas and New Year—some of you may be reading this before January as it’s had to go off to the printers relatively early this month for the Christmas break, but hopefully it will reach you in good time. If you do get it by post I hope the Royal Mail manage to get it to you—we’ve had no most over recent days due to the recent snow and “health and safety.” I’ve made it to Kent for work and it seems as though it was worse there than North of the river. The main event for us this month was The Preston back at the beginning of December. I’m pleased to say we finished, for the second successive year with my-self driving and Matt navigating, and had a better result than last year. We spent the night with the heater running on full once again, having lost half the front bumper before the first passage control on the first section causing the radiator to clog up with mud, but although the car was making a number of funny noises, it made it! We’re also looking forward to the Longmoor Loco which is a stage rally on 28th December. We haven’t done it before, but it was full within 2.5 days of entries opening so that’s a good sign. The main event after that is The Carpetbagger, a rally based in Devon towards the end of January. I’ve got Andy Elcomb navigating for me, and Matt has en-tered with Kevin Ablitt navving, so there’s a few things to sort out on the cars [Matt is changing a gear-box as we type...!] and we’ll be ready. Who needs a winter break?! By now, everyone should have had their renewal re-quests in the post for your 7oaks membership - if you haven't, please contact Andy Elcomb whose details are at the front. Hope to see you at the dinner dance at the end of the month—provisional results tables are at the back of this month’s Acorn. Suze Endean
Chin’s Chairman’s Chat Whew! I’ve just finished putting all the Acorns which Diana Franks gave me from November 1959 with only a few gaps. The committee list at the front of the Nov ’59 issue contains one name still on our membership list – one Vic Elford – whatever happened to him? (too long and great a list to include here!) Also there was a notice for a Bonfire Night Fireworks display which warned that - “…. young ladies are advised to wear slacks.” Anyone needing help with these terms, please call. The same notice also advised – “ If your wife wants to drive – don’t stand in her way.” Andy Kilby and I are getting the B ready for the Exeter Trial in early January and have found an exhaust place that will actually bend pipes to pattern – Maidstone Exhausts, Bower Lane, Maidstone – very useful. We should be ready before Christmas which takes the pressure off a bit. Trials are great fun as a few other members know – I’d highly recommend them. I hope that by now you’ll all have order your Awards Night tickets, that’s for you, your family and your friends. Your club is subsidising the cost to include a band to dance to – just like the good old days. We’re going on until 1.00am so it’ll be a night to remember – make sure you’ve booked. Crystal Palace – May 2010: Running an event of this type is an enormous under-taking when local authorities and the paying public are involved. We’ve just a couple of loose ends to tie up before the event is 100% up and running, but considering what we’ve achieved so far I can congratulate those who’ve contributed to reach this point with every prospect of a cracking event. The organising team is gaining very valuable members and is all but set for the ‘all systems go’ call which should come before you read this. Karen Webber has been inundated with entry enquiries and we’ve had offers of help from all sorts of people and clubs, it’s amazing how much enthusiasm this historic venue generates. Watch this space and answer your phone, email etc. when help is needed – there’ll be lots to do. During 2010 I hope to do a lot more competing – I’ll have to buy some new overall and gloves so I hope it’ll be worth the expense. If you’re not planning the same then you should be – it has always been and should always be FUN –p that’s what we’re here for. Happy and successful New Year to you all. Chin

SDMC SOCIAL SCENE IS NOW UNDER NEW
MANAGEMENT !! Rosemary and Nigel Mead are your new Social Secre-
taries and can be contacted on Tel.No.: 01892 832420. (An e-mail address will also
be available shortly).
Social evenings are easy to remember – the 3rd Wednesday in every month.
(So pencil them in your diaries now!!).
All Club members are invited to The Bell at Kemsing (OS188 map reference: 556586) on every social eve-ning for a Noggin & Natter, usually from 7:30pm on-
wards. Food is available to order from the bar. (NB. for organised events it would be very helpful for
John, the landlord, to know in advance how many people wish to eat. So, to avoid the disappointment of no food being available for you, please contact Rosemary or Nigel prior to the event if you wish to
purchase food).
In addition to the usual Noggin & Natter we will be organising extra activities on some of these evenings for you. Look out for our S&DMC Social Event Calen-
dar which will be posted in the Acorn.
We are open to suggestions (polite ones only please!!) – if you have any requests for future new events, or just wish to recommend existing ones, please let us
know and we will do our best to include them.
Make a New Years resolution to come along to at least one social evening in 2010.
We very much look forward to seeing you there.

What a Hero To set the scene, it was the Sevenoaks Motor Club’s PCT at Stoneacre on 8th November. The weather had been very inclement prior to this event, precipitating a great deal of ‘dampness’ to the ground, and John Kemp did his bit by designing the tests in his imitable way, ie not or the tentative driver. So to test one, which started to the left of the field, near the river and behind the sheds and on up the hill. Chris Dennis was marshal for this test. He valiantly held his position half way up this hill, having estimated the most likely failure gate and where he could maintain a foothold! The car in front of us, the driver shall be nameless, set off at great speed to clean the test but unfortunately failed. However in the process revved so much that mud from the back wheels was flying in all directions especially at Chris. He was absolutely covered in mud – face, glasses and clothing as the photograph shows. He continued to call the next car (ours) without any complaint. When we failed at the same gate he calmly came over to mark our card as if nothing untoward had occurred. Unfortunately I got the fit of the giggles, so Chris, this is an apology for my rudeness and I think you did a splendid job.
Christine Balderson
Chris has also won the November Monthly Mug for his efforts.

Christmas Health & Safety The Rocking Song Little Jesus, sweetly sleep, do not stir; We will lend a coat of fur, We will rock you, rock you, rock you, We will rock you, rock you, rock you: Fur is no longer appropriate wear for small infants, both due to risk of allergy to animal fur, and for ethical reasons. Therefore faux fur, anice cellular blanket or perhaps micro-fleece material should be considered a suitable alternative. Please note, only persons who have been subject to a Criminal Record Bureau check and have enhanced clear-ance will be permitted to rock baby Jesus. Persons must carry their CRB disclosure with them at all times and be prepared to provide three forms of identification before rocking commences.
Jingle Bells
Dashing through the snow In a one horse open sleigh O'er the fields we go Laughing all the way A risk assessment must be submitted before an open sleigh is considered safe for members of the public to travel on. The risk assessment must also consider whether it is appropriate to use only one horse for such a venture, particularly if passengers are of larger proportions. Please note, permission must be gained from landowners before entering their fields. To avoid offending those not participating in celebrations, we would request that laughter is moderate only and not loud enough to be considered a noise nuisance.
While Shepherds Watched While shepherds watched Their flocks by night All seated on the ground The angel of the Lord came down And glory shone around The union of Shepherds has complained that it breaches health and safety regulations to insist that shepherds watch their flocks without appropriate seating arrangements being provided, therefore benches, stools and orthopaedic chairs are now available. Shepherds have also requested that due to the inclement weather condi-tions at this time of year that they should watch their flocks via cctv cameras from centrally heated shepherd observation huts. Please note, the angel of the lord is reminded that before shining his /her glory all around she / he must as-certain that all shepherds have been issued with glasses capable of filtering out the harmful effects of UVA, UVB and Glory.
Little Donkey Little donkey, little donkey on the dusty road Got to keep on plodding onwards with your precious load The RSPCA have issued strict guidelines with regard to how heavy a load that a donkey of small stature is per-mitted to carry, also included in the guidelines is guidance regarding how often to feed the donkey and how many rest breaks are required over a four hour plodding period. Please note that due to the increased risk of pollution from the dusty road, Mary and Joseph are required to wear face masks to prevent inhalation of any airborne particles. The donkey has expressed his discomfort at being labelled 'little' and would prefer just to be simply referred to as Mr. Donkey. To comment upon his height or lack thereof may be considered an in-fringement of his equine rights.

Christmas Healthy & Safety, continued…. Rudolph the red nosed reindeer Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose. And if you ever saw him, you would even say it glows. You are advised that under the Equal Opportunities for All policy, it is inappropriate for persons to make com-ment with regard to the ruddiness of any part of Mr. R. Reindeer. Further to this, exclusion of Mr R Reindeer from the Reindeer Games will be considered discriminatory and disciplinary action will be taken against those found guilty of this offence. A full investigation will be implemented and sanctions - including suspension on full pay - will be considered whilst this investigation takes place.

Trophy Tables 2009 Here are the results for the year 2009 so far – these are provisional for the next few weeks, please let us know if you have any queries.. The tables which relate to our events are complete as our year has now finished, but those involving other clubs’ events are yet to be finalized as there are some events yet to run – I know that our lovely editor and her man are doing the Longmoor Loco Stages after Christmas (good luck Suze & Matt). There are also a few tables for which the sums are not yet complete – final details next month – or better still, book your place at our Awards Dinner and Dance on 30th January and support the winners and find out the final results. Each year seems to bring a slightly different set of events. This year, instead of the trek up to the wilds, sorry, Wolds of Lincolnshire for the Cadwell Sprint, this year we were at Lydden with the London Irish Motor Club. None-theless, our core events, the Autotest Series, 12-cars, Scatters and Car Trials continue to be very well supported which shows what a strong grass roots level of support and involvement our club has. Trog Trophy For those sad people, sorry, organizers, who spend their days making it possible for us to compete – thanks to all of them. Andy Elcomb has had a really busy year. It’s sometimes hard work but it’s also very rewarding, come and join us to find out (or Chin will be on the phone – you have been warned).
C E White Trophy Awarded for marshalling on our events which again allows the rest of us to play – more thanks well deserved. It is good to see more than sixty names on this list, there’s hope for the future. Those of you who aren’t on the list, have a look at the 2010 calendar in this acorn and put the dates in your diary to come and join us if you’re not competing.

It’s good to see nearly ninety names on this list , lets see if we can break the hundred mark in 2010 – don’t forget, this represents a whole lot of fun had during the year. Congratulations to Daren Hall – again! Somebody please give him a run for his money next year – Chris Judge tried but made the mistake of choosing Chin to navigate for him on a couple of events.

The trophies decided by your committee are awarded as follows: Firstly the two trophies which can prove to be the most expensive to win: The Batturd Cup – David Balderson The Bent Con-Rod – Iain Gibson The Basil Elkington Trophy – Suze Endean The President’s Trophy – Jay Grossmith A new award introduced this year courtesy of Jim Giddings Furniture Ltd.: The JGF Acorn Tankard – Darren Tyre The Paul Brooks-Johnson Trophy and the Elford Bowl had no qualifiers of sufficient merit this year and so will not be awarded – please try harder next year. As I mentioned earlier we are still wrking on the remaining awards – the sums are more complicated – so more next month. Well done to all members who appear in one or more of our tables – to those who don’t we still welcome you but please think what fun you’re missing. Russell Giddings
