2011—DECEMBER 1 THE FAIRVIEWAN
My beloved members,
Heartiest greetings in the wonderful name of
Jesus! Praise God for one hundred and two years of
ministry in the Oklahoma City community. Each
year provides us with an opportunity to look back,
to see ourselves as we are, and to look into the
future.
Our history is a chronicle of the inspiration,
dedication and hard work of the Pastors and members as they were
guided by the Holy Spirit to organize, build, support and serve the
church.
May the Lord help us to continue the sacrifices and services
needed to make real His Kingdom in the lives of men. This is a time
of a new beginning and a time when we can re-evaluate whatever we
are doing for our people. It is also a time when our leadership
should take stock of themselves and see where the weaknesses are
and where new strength can be added.
Excitement and willingness on the part of our people is the key to
success or failure, whichever the case may be. Without success we
cannot impress this community and without excitement and
willingness of our people we will not be a success as a church.
As your Pastor, I want to be as kind and considerate as possible
but I also want to see this church do what its mission is supposed to
be.
I am of the opinion that there are enough Christian people who
are interested to do a good job in all Ministries of this church to turn
it upside down for God.
The Lord has truly blessed us as a Church Family. Therefore,
we go forward into our future, confident our great expectations will give birth to even greater achievements!

If you believe in your heart that Jesus Is Lord, the Christ,
the Savior, the Son of the Living God, and you are willing to
turn from sin to God, then receive Jesus Christ now by faith
and pray this prayer:
Lord Jesus I am a sinner. Forgive me of all my sins, come into my heart
and save me. I do now confess you as my risen Lord.

2011—DECEMBER 3 THE FAIRVIEWAN
ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, the Fairview
Baptist Church held the monthly Fishes and Loaves
Food Give-away. Over a thousand persons were
able to enjoy turkey and the trimmings provided by
the Fairview Missionary Baptist Church for
Thanksgiving.
This Ministry had over 30 regular
volunteers, along with Fairview’s Drill Team and
others of the Youth Ministry, Fairview’s Men’s
Ministry, The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity from
Langston University, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority from
Oklahoma University, Sigma Lam Beta Fraternity
from Oklahoma University, Phi Beta Sigma from
Oklahoma University and the AKA who gave of
their time to aid the community. There were
students from Shidler Elementary and some young
men whose parents wanted them to be a part of
giving back to the community.
The atmosphere was full of love and
thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father who always
make certain we have enough food for everyone in
need.
The Fishes and Loaves Ministry and the
recipients hear a spirit-filled message each month
that is usually delivered by our own Rev. Derrick
Walters. We were blessed on November 19 with a
Thanksgiving message by Youth Pastor Rev. Derek
Nettles that assured us God can use everybody and
He uses broken vessels to carry out His plan;
sometimes you have to make it on broken pieces,
bad habits or missed opportunities.
The Fishes and Loaves Food Give-away is
held each month on the 3rd or 4th Saturday from
10am - 12pm, or until the food is gone, and the
dedicated Ministry workers are always present and
willing to serve. The Ministry is led by Sisters
Teressa Hunter and Theresa Kirklin as Co-
Directors. Essential elements that bears
mentioning is Brother Charles Hardrick, Men’s
Ministry Director, and the men who have been
instrumental in making certain that some of the
men of the church are available to meet the truck to
unload the food for distribution and assist in setup.
Another arm of the Ministry is the deliveries to sick
and shut-ins, which is done primarily by Brother
Carlos and Sister Maxine Brown and Brother Ardis
and Sister Mary Franklin. Many others workers,
too many to name, faithfully show up, month after
month, to give of themselves for this cause. Other
Fairview members come from time to time to
assist. Without the physical and monetary support
and prayers of the Fairview Church Family, this
Ministry would not be able to be the blessing that it
has been to so many families over the past years.
This has been an exceptionally blessed year
for this Ministry and we are thankful to God and to
our Pastor, Rev. John A. Reed, Jr., who has a
vision for this church and is a light in this
community. Thank you to all the workers for your
untiring commitment and to the Church Family all that
you’ve done and are doing. We invite you to come
and share with us.

FAIRVIEW PROVIDES A THANKSGIVING DINNER FOR OVER A THOUSAND !
2011—DECEMBER 4 THE FAIRVIEWAN
The JR Inspirational Choir held its annual musi-
cal at Fairview on Sunday, November 6 at
6:00 PM. The choir did a celebration march into the
choir stand and each choir member looked eager to make
a joyful noise unto the Lord. After marching in, they
continued with the lyrics of the high spirited selection and
continued to get their praise on in the choir stand.
The joy of the choir members permeated the room. The
atmosphere was highly charged and full of praises. There
is a song the choir has performed with the following lyr-
ics, “The blessing of the Lord is here; the blessing
of the Lord is here. I can feel it in the atmos-
phere; the blessing of the Lord is Here!!” This is
the best description of this year’s musical as the choir
members were on one accord to Praise the Lord!
The musical was dedicated to the men of God who pro-
claim His Word in the pulpit. As several of the communi-
ty’s clergy were present for the musical, a primary objec-
tive of the musical was to be an encouragement to
preachers to continue to Illuminate the Community in the
ministry of God’s Word. We were all truly encouraged
by this fine choir ushering in the presence of the Lord.

2011—DECEMBER 5 THE FAIRVIEWAN
As the Christmas holiday approaches, I am
reminded of friends like you who make Fairview so
special and my work as a Pastor so rewarding. It is
truly an honor to have all of you as a part of our
Ministry. I appreciate your faithful service as we
serve the Lord together through the Fairview
Church.
The Fairview Family is in my prayers during the holiday season. I
pray that God will surround you with the peace and comfort that
come from only Him … and may the warmth and love of friends
and loved ones help make this a special season of celebration.
I am reminded of the angel’s words recorded in Luke 2:10-11 “Fear
not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be
to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a
Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” My prayer is that you reflect
on the birth of Christ, you will feel the inner joy that is the real
meaning of Christmas.
Wife and I wish you a very blessed holiday season.
In celebration of Him,
Your Pastor

2011—DECEMBER 8 THE FAIRVIEWAN
A Holy Land Experience
—By M. Patterson, Editor
On November 7, 2011, 14 travelers from Oklahoma, Texas and
Utah met in Chicago, Illinois, to begin what most would term “an
experience of a lifetime” — a trip to The Holy Land. The host of
the group was Rev. J. A. Reed, Jr., Pastor of Fairview and Vice
President—Western Region of the National Baptist Convention,
USA, Inc.
Eight of the travelers were from Fairview: Pastor Reed and
Sister Pat Reed, Rita Wommack, Teresa Hill, Maeleatha Patterson,
Lola Fields, and Lonnie and Rosie Hunt. Also from the Oklahoma
City area were Joyce Thompson, Betty Winters and Charlie Mae
Sumpter, all from Tabitha Baptist Church, and Effie Owens from
Loving St. James Baptist Church in Spencer. The Oklahoma City
group left Will Rogers Airport at 7:05 a.m. and met the remaining
two, Rev. Larry Mouton of Crockett, Texas, and Lula Brock of
Ogden, Utah, in Chicago.
A bond developed among the “pilgrims” at Chicago O’Hare as
we waited for the flight that would take us to JFK New York. After
arriving at JFK, we went through the last phase of security checks
to board the plane for a 10 1/2 hour flight to our destination. The
flight presented none of the anxieties anticipated by this writer but
instead added new experiences, along with some moments of
excitement!
We arrived in Tel Aviv on Tuesday evening, November 8
(Israel time). Israel is 8 hours ahead of CST. As we left the airport
to board our tour bus for the hotel, all concepts of time had left me.
I left OKC on the morning of the 7th, left New York in the evening
of the 7th, and it was now the next day, the 8th— and dark! We
were met at the airport in Tel Aviv by our tour guide and driver,
Joseph and Mike, who became a part of our family for the
remainder of our time in Israel.
The rest of the trip presented experiences and memories that
will forever be a part of the lives of the group. Our first night’s stay
at Nathanya was at a
hotel with balconies
that overlooked the
majestic Great
Mediterranean Sea.
The worst part of it
was that we were
only there one night
and was not
afforded the
opportunity to enjoy
the view from our
porches. However,
our first day’s tour
included a walk
down to the Seaside
where we were able
to actually get in the
water, collect
seashells, sand, etc.
Each day was
scheduled: wakeup
call at 5:30 a.m.;
breakfast at 6:30
PASTOR REED TO BE HONORED AT MACU 60TH
COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES
The Board of Trustees of Mid
America Christian University
(MACU) unanimously voted to
bestow upon Rev. John A. Reed, Jr.
the Doctor of Divinity degree during
the 60th Commencement Exercises
of Mid-America Christian University
(MACU) to be held Saturday,
December 10, 2011, at 2:00 p.m.
MACU President John Fozard explained: “The degree
recognizes a lifetime of superlative public service and
impactful leadership. A board cannot bestow any higher
award than this when wanting to honor one’s life’s
accomplishments. For this reason, the Board of Trustees at
Mid-America Christian University gives out such degrees
very selectively and sparingly.”
The Honorable Todd Lamb, Lieutenant Governor of
Oklahoma, will present the commencement address to
graduates, guests and visitors, and the MACU academic
community. During the exercises, degrees will be conferred
upon 132 graduates representing 25 degree programs.
Rev. John A. Reed, Jr., has served more than 50 years as a
minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for over 48 years
as Pastor of Fairview Baptist Church. He has also served
and continue to serve in a number of leadership positions in
the religious community and civil community, including:
President of the Oklahoma Baptist State Congress of
Christian Education; Moderator of the East Zion
Consolidated District Association; President of the
Oklahoma Baptist State Convention; 5th Vice President of
the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, an
affiliate of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.;
Vice President for the Western Region of the National
Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., President of the Baptist
Ministers Association of Oklahoma City; President of the
Concerned Clergy for Spiritual Renewal; President of
the ,nts for the 7.5 million member body. He was given the
responsibility of leadership over the Western Region,
presently constituted by the following states and territories:
Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Nevada,
Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, and
Washington. In addition to his ministry, Rev. Reed,
alongside friends and colleagues, launched The Oklahoma
City Herald, a progressive newspaper for the African
American community that has become one of the most
widely read weekly publications in Oklahoma. Rev. Reed
serves as the Herald’s editor.
The 60th Commencement Exercises of Mid-America
Christian University are open to the public and begin at
2:00 p.m. at Gaulke Activity Center on the university
campus, 3500 SW 119th Street, Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma. Seating is limited.
2011—DECEMBER 9 THE FAIRVIEWAN
a.m.; on the bus at 7:30 a.m. Lunch was
along the tour route and back to our hotel
for the night for dinner at 6:30 p.m.
Other hotel stays were two nights in
Tiberias with a balcony view of the Sea
of Galilee and the city. The last two
nights were in the city of Jerusalem; our
rooms gave us a picturesque view of the
great city.
A few of the sites visited during the
tour (not in the order listed) include
Caesarea on the Mediterranean,
Capernaum where we were able to walk
among the ruins of the first century
synagogue where Jesus preached and
Caesarea Philippi where Peter made his
confession. Nazareth (the hometown of
Jesus) and the Church of Annunciation,
marking the announcement of the
forthcoming Son of God; in Bethlehem,
the Church of the Nativity where we
were able to kneel and touch the “Star of
Bethlehem,” which marks the exact spot
where our Lord was born. There was the
Mount of Beatitudes where Jesus gave
the Sermon on the Mount.
We took a boat ride on the Sea of
Galilee on a replica of the boat that Jesus
was on when He calmed the storm. We
went to the Jordan and some were
baptized by Rev. Reed and Rev. Mouton.
Some others that were not baptized were
able to wade in the Jordan. We looked
upon Mt. Hermon and Mt. Tabor,
different schools of thought as to which
is actually the Mount of Transfiguration.
One of the most moving experiences
was to stand on Mt. Carmel, the site of
Elijah’s contest with the prophets of
Baal, and look down in the valley upon
the fields of Armageddon, the place of
the last battle.
There were many
other sites with each
bringing its own
impression and
experience. We saw
many ruins, places that
we’ve studied and read
about but to be able to see
them made what had been Biblical
readings become alive.
I must mention the visit to the
Western (Wailing) Wall and the walk
along Via Dolorosa (the Way of the
Cross), down the streets of Old
Jerusalem, the route that Jesus took as He
carried the cross. Some of the places we
visited were said to possibly have been
the places but some, the guide pointed
out that it was certain to have been the
place where our Lord actually walked, or
taught, or performed miracles.
We visited the Garden Tomb and
Golgotha (Place of the Skull). We
participated in the Lord’s Supper, issued
by Pastor Reed. Other places of interest
were visits to the Dead Sea, JFK
Memorial, Martin Luther King
Memorial, and to see the Dead Sea
Scrolls. We shopped and some rode
camels!
Our visits and experiences are too
numerous to mention. I spoke with some
of the tour group and most gave the same
response to their experience. It’s
something that a person has to experience
for themselves. It has strengthen their
reading and understanding of the
Scriptures because of the ability to say,
“I saw that” or I was there.” Overall, it
brought about a spiritual, mental and
physical renewal. We walked where
Jesus walked, we ate the foods that were
typical of those times and there were
constant reminders of being in “Bible
country,” and seeing the reality of the
scriptures. A common statement was “it
was a life-changing experience.”
On early Monday morning, shortly
after midnight, we began our trip back:
Tel Aviv to JFK (New York) to Chicago
O’Hare, where said our goodbyes to as a
group, and made our way back to our
respective homes. Thanks to all for your
prayers and, above all, thank God for
granting us the opportunity to make the
trip and His traveling grace while we
were gone.
Should the opportunity be extended
again, I pray to be able to once again
make the make the trip.

2011—DECEMBER 13 THE FAIRVIEWAN
Holiday Greetings in the name of our Lord
and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Once more we
greet you prayerfully, looking to the hills
from whence cometh our help, praying that
God continues to make His face shine upon
each of you.
The Ministry continues to serve in support of
our Church family, doing those things which
God is pleased for us to be engaged in. Let
me begin by saying thanks to those of you
who answered the call to come help with the
huge mass of people that the Fishes and
Loaves Ministry served the weekend prior to
Thanksgiving. I personally do not know how
we would have made it without your help.
Thanks again and it’s my earnest prayer that
we will continue to see you each designated
weekend that we have the monthly food give
away. Your help is desperately needed every
month.
Also, we want to send well wishes and
Holiday greetings to our fellow member,
Brother Terry Peeler, while he is away. We
anticipate his return in February and pray
that God does not see fit anymore to take him
away from his family and church for these
extended periods of time.
Men, there are a number of the brethren who
are sick and afflicted and some shut ins
among our ranks. Let us not forget to pray
for them and visit with them whenever and
wherever possible. Also, let us pray for
those who are incarcerated and cannot be
with us. Bro. Billy Marshall, a faithful
member and participant in some of our
ministries, including Deacon and Music
Ministries, advised me recently that he is
facing surgery and would be inactive for
roughly two months from that surgery. Let
us uphold Billy in prayer and I urged him to
continue to trust in and lean on Jesus Christ.
He can and will sustain him. His
surgery is scheduled before the
first of December and I will
report on his condition as soon as
its available to me.
December is the month that Pastor has
excused us from all of our monthly meetings,
but he has not excused us from being at
morning worship each Sunday and paying
our tithes and offerings. So even though we
may be out of town, let us not forget to
worship on Sunday morning and let’s bring
and leave all of our tithes into the storehouse,
preferable before taking them out of town
with you.
AGAIN, WE WANT TO EXTEND TO
YOU OUR WISHES FOR THE HAPPIEST
OF HOLIDAYS AND A PROSPEROUS
AND BLESSED NEW YEAR.
Scripture for the Month: For unto you is
born this day in the city of David, a
Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this
shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the
babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying
in a manger. And suddenly
there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host
praising God, and saying.
Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Luke 2:11-14

2011—DECEMBER 15 THE FAIRVIEWAN
Brother Larry Dale Richardson
Sister Bridgette C. Pickett
In Memory
In memory of Brother Larry Richardson and Sister Bridgette Pickett. We offer our condolences, prayers and support to
the families of Brother Larry and Sister Bridgette. May God continually cover you with His loving, tender love, grace
and mercy. Hold fast to His promises!
“Lo! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at
the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For
this perishable nature must put on the imperishable, and this mortal nature must put on immortality. When the perisha-
ble puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:
"Death is swallowed up in victory." "O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?" The sting of death is
sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. - I Corinthians 15:51-57

The staff of The Fairviewan would like to take this time to wish our faithful
readers and the Fairview Church Family a blessed holiday season. As you celebrate the
Savior's birth, may you experience the same joy and peace that was heralded by the
angels over 2000 years ago.
Thank you for the support you have given to this publication over the past 18
years! It is your prayers and God’s mercy and grace that have enabled us to continue
this work. It is our hope that it has been a blessing to you. We hold fast to the mission
of presenting and uplifting Christ, that souls may be saved, backsliders reclaimed and
un-churched seek to be an active part of the body of Christ.
We look forward with faith and hope to sharing with you in the coming year.
You may now view issues of the newsletter in full color on the church’s website at

May God's grace and mercy be with you and give you peace!
