PRATT AND WHITNEY MUSEUM TRIP
21 July, 2011
Thirteen members of the Thames River Composite
Squadron were treated to a three hour tour of the
Pratt and Whitney Museum and Customer ServiceCenter in East Hartford. The tour was led by Mr.
Robert Reynolds, the grandfather of Cadet
Chartier. Mr. Reynolds has forty years of experience as a maintenance instructor at Pratt and
explained much about the highly technical
manufacturing, maintenance, and customer servicecomponents of Pratt and Whitney Corporation. By
chance the trip occurred on the day before the 86th
anniversary of the founding of Pratt as an aircraft
engine manufacturer.
Cadets Cathcart and Flynn listen as Mr. Reynoldsexplains details of the diffuser used in the PW4000
high pressure turbine.
The history of the corporation extends back to the
Civil War and Pratt and Whitney was one of the
many companies which developed during thegolden age of American industrial development.
In 1925, Frederick Rentschler, an executive withthe Wright Aeronautical Corp. saw an opportunity
to produce air cooled radial engines for the U.S.
Navy. He raised the capital and recruited a
talented pool of engineers from Wright whichincluded George Mead, an engine designer par
excellence. On Christmas, 1925, the first Wasp
engine was produced, the progenitor of a line of legendary power-plants.
