FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
DOCTORS IN SCHOOLS
It can never be said that Wedderburn College does not
embrace opportunity for our students. We are very excited to
announce that we have been successful in obtaining a new
support service for our school that will commence on the first
day of Term one 2017.
The Doctors in Schools Program is designed to ensure that
young people get the support, advice and treatment they need
in order to meet their full potential. Wedderburn College will
receive the services of a General Practitioner one day a week
to provide medical advice and health care to our students. We
will also be provided with an appropriate fit for purpose
building on school grounds that will have an examination
room, waiting room office space and relevant technology.
One hundred and thirty five schools, including Wedderburn
College, applied to be included in this program with one
hundred schools selected. The program will roll out over the
next 2 years in to 2017 and 2018. We are proud that we have
been chosen to be in the first 20 schools to roll this program
out.
I met last week with Departmental personnel to select the
most appropriate site for this building to ensure best privacy
and access for students.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR 2017
On a different note but always with students’ best interest in
mind, the end of the year is fast approaching and although it
seems too early to be thinking about back to school things for
2017, it is important to prepare for the back to school
financial pressures of school starting.
There are some avenues available to support families with
back to school costs.
STATE SCHOOLS’ RELIEF If your family is eligible, you can receive financial assistance to help meet the costs of your child’s education. State
Schools' Relief may cover the cost of new school uniforms, shoes, books and more to assist families in need. State
Schools’ Relief only responds to requests from schools and not from parents. The school will then make a request to
State Schools' Relief on your behalf. Schools, not families, can apply to State Schools’ Relief for this support. For more
information about applying for State Schools’ Relief, contact the College Office.
CAMPS, SPORTS AND EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF) This commenced in 2015 for four years and will provide payments to eligible students to attend camps, sports and
excursions.

CSEF applications for 2016 are closed and open again from term one 2017. Parents and guardians are required to submit
a new CSEF application form each year.
Victorian government Year 7 students who are recipients of the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund are automatically
eligible for a uniform package. Applications for the CSEF Uniform Pack will open on Wednesday 2 November and are
managed through the College. Once the application is approved students will receive either free clothing items from
State Schools Relief’s Student’s Choice range, a voucher subsiding the purchase of items at our uniform supplier,
Bendigo Uniforms Plus or a combination of both.
In 2017 students will also receive a free pair of shoes. There is a choice between shoes to match your school’s uniform
requirements.
In 2017 Prep students who are recipients of the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund are also automatically eligible for
uniform support by a similar process.
For more information read the fact sheets attached to the newsletter and or contact the College Office for details.

YEAR 7-10 NEIGHBOURHOOD MATHS PATHWAY TRIAL
On average, there is an eight year spread of ability in a year 7 class. But it doesn't have to be this way. Wedderburn
College is trialling an exciting new maths program called ‘Maths Pathway' for students in Year 7-10 during Term 4.
100% growth averaged over a year equates to one school year's improvement in one calendar year (this should be the
minimum growth for any student). We have already seen some amazing growth rates by our students - 133%, 200%
even 300% growth. To learn more about this fantastic project and to see how fast your child is growing ask them to log
onto to Maths Pathway. There is a parent page on your child’s dashboard (bottom right of the screen).
YEAR 6 TO YEAR 7 TRANSITION
Grade 6 students will participate in transition activities to Year 7 during this term. Please see below for key Wedderburn
College Grade 6 to Year 7 transition dates:

FEDUNI SCHOOLS OUTREACH YEAR 8 EXPERIENCE CAMP
The experience will be rewarding for all students attending the two day camp – making them aware of the benefits and
possibilities that further education can offer following their successful completion of secondary school. The camp will
allow students to step outside their comfort zone by working with a range of students from other secondary schools as
well as current university staff and students from Federation University (FedUni).
Permission forms must be finalised by Friday 11th November 2016.
SUNSMART HATS
A reminder that as a Sunsmart school, students are required to wear a sunsmart hat during Term 4 whenever they are
outside. This includes recess, lunch and PE. A sunsmart hat is not a baseball style cap! Any student who is not wearing a
sunsmart hat is required to sit in the BER during recess and lunch or not participate in PE activities if they are outside.

YEAR 11-12 NEIGHBOURHOOD
Last week our Year 12 students completed their final official classes and celebrated their last day in 70s style.
Their graduation is a wonderful achievement that in time they will look back on with pride regarding the friends they
have made, the battles they have both won and lost, the experiences they have enjoyed and the success they have
achieved. Success in the coming months for these students may be measured by qualifying for university, getting into
the TAFE course, gaining employment or even embarking on some form of travel.
Regardless of what their endeavours may be, the future is theirs to take advantage of, to make a difference and to
understand what great opportunities there are for the taking. Be brave – take chances, live life and know that you leave
here with our best wishes and blessings. We are so proud of our Year 12’s achievements and look forward to hearing of
their many adventures in the years to come.
It was fabulous opportunities for us to all celebrate together at our Year 12 Celebratory Dinner last Thursday evening. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff, students, parents and community members who supported the

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT
As is often the case at this time of year, the culmination of resource funding applications comes to a close and we find
out if we have been successful. Throughout the year we have applied for a number of funds to do with garden projects
and beautification of our school but at this stage we haven’t been successful with funding applications but guess what.
Wedderburn College has made it through as a finalist in the Resource Smart School Awards in the category of “Water
School of The Year”. There are four finalists in this category and the award will be presented at a ceremony at the
IMAX theatre in Melbourne on Friday 11th November which a team of students and staff from our school will attend.
There will also be a number of other awards presented for various other categories as well as an opportunity to be part of
various workshops happening on the day sponsored by Sustainability Victoria.
Last term Planet Ark sponsored a tree planting day for schools across the state but due to a number of circumstances we
were unable to get on board at the time, so we are having our own unique Tree Planting day on Tuesday 29th November.
We are being generously supported by the Bunnings store at Epsom who will attend the day and run some workshops

with students, and also supply us with plants to place in our indigenous garden. This will be a great event where students
can gain some knowledge of how to care for plants in this dry environment and also join in planting species of plants
that will thrive in the unique kind of soil here. Keep watching for more details of this event.

RESOURCE SMART Last Friday afternoon students and staff were involved with a whole school Clean Up Australia Day.
There were several meeting places for primary and secondary year levels where students and staff were given garbage
bags and gloves then everyone headed to their designated cleaning areas.
The event was a huge success as students showed lots of enthusiasm and wanted to participate.
Thank you to everyone who played a part in this important Resource Smart annual event including Mrs McKenzie
through the SRC and Lorna Booth who made sure there were enough gloves to go around.
