Ex-DARPA director Peter Lee takes the helm of Microsoft Research
with focus on telepresence Story and images by Robert Buderi / Xconomy
How do you help invigorate the Microsoft machine? Well, for Peter Lee,
the answer lies in the frontiers of computer science. Lee is the new
managing director of Microsoft Research, the company's global research
arm. His job is to help his parent company, not always quick on the
uptake with emerging technology, understand the latest advances in
computer science and better integrate them into both new and existing
products--in other words, to put some fresh life in Microsoft's innovation
step. Continue reading...
InForm: MIT tech makes it possible to 'be' two places at once Story and images by Tim Hornyak / CNET
It's still impossible to be in two places at once, unless you've got one of these
gadgets lying around. The InForm is a dynamic shape display from MIT's Tangible
Media Group. It turns 3D data into crude, physical representations in real time.

Sonus Enhances Video Support: Provides a Complete SBC Powered
UC Experience November 5, 2013 | David S. Maldow, Esq.
Sonus has announced the release of the latest version of their
SBC 5000 series of session border controllers. Session border
controllers have historically been known for handling general
media, interworking and network security issues, but I found
this release interesting because of its heavy new support for
video traffic. Overall, the release has over 100 updates,
including the increasingly essential advanced Lync support.
Once again, the ever increasing pervasiveness of video in the
workplace is having ripple effects beyond the traditional
telepresence paradigm. Today, even SBCs are all about the
video.

New Telepresence Options Report: Quality Audio is Crucial for
Visual Collaboration November 4, 2013 | David S. Maldow, Esq.
Telepresence Options is announcing the
addition of a new Technology Brief to our
growing report library. The paper, sponsored
by Phoenix Audio Technologies, is titled
"Quality Audio is Crucial for Visual
Collaboration: A Quick Note for Users,
Vendors, and Integrators of Collaboration
Technology" and is available free at
the Telepresence Options Scribd Library.
Video-based collaboration is an exciting and
empowering business tool. But with all the
focus on video, some of us may be taking
audio for granted. Audio quality can have a
much greater impact on your meetings and
working sessions than you may realize. This
Technology Brief drills down into the
relationship between audio quality, worker
fatigue, and meeting effectiveness. Learn
what you need to know, to ensure you aren't
hurting your team's productivity.

Vaddio's GroupSTATION Transforms Your Meeting Room into a
Smart Meeting Room October 31, 2013 | David S. Maldow, Esq.
Today's meeting rooms and shared workspaces force
us to make an unfortunate choice. We can use our
personal devices, or we can use the premium
meeting room collaboration tools in the room. If we
use our own devices, life is simple, there is no
learning curve, no complicated tools to learn. But
you are limited by the screen size and audio
capabilities of your device. The result is a smoothly
run presentation / meeting with limited impact.
This is where Vaddio steps in with its GroupSTATION
solution (which has gone GA today). We met with
Vaddio CEO, Rob Sheeley, to see this offering in action and get the details about Vaddio's plan to embrace the
BYOD revolution. Click through to see what we learned.

It’s the Age of Attending Trade Shows Using Telepresence Robots!
Last week Suitable Technologies made history by making 50 of their Beam remote presence devices (which the
rest of the world knows as "telepresence robots") available for
rental at the RoboConference in Silicon Valley. Telepresence
Options publisher Howard Lichtman and editor David Maldow
attended using two different Beams to gauge the experience of
attending a conference using a "remote presence device". What
we discovered was fascinating and holds important implications for
the $100 Billion+ global trade show and conference industry. Get
the pros, cons, and logistics of attending your next conference or
trade show as a telepresence robot.

Cisco's Tough Sell for Videoconferencing
Story and images by Ari Levy / Bloomberg Businessweek
John Chambers, the chief executive officer of Cisco Systems (CSCO), used to call
telepresence his favorite new technology. In 2006, the year Cisco unveiled
videoconferencing hardware priced as high as $300,000 per system, Chambers said
it would set records for how fast it became a $1 billion business. "This is the first
time in my career that I have seen this type of excitement and interest from CEOs
for a technology," he said a year later on an earnings call.

WebRTC Video Codec Unresolved
Story and images by Irwin Lazar / nojitter
The IETF RTCweb working group's failure to agree on a Mandatory to
Implement (MTI) video codec will constrain WebRTC's momentum.
Last week's RTCweb working group meeting at IETF 88 in Vancouver
failed to reach agreement on a Mandatory to Implement (MTI) video
codec for WebRTC. As Eric Krapf noted, the debate has been between
Google's royalty free codec (VP8) and H.264, use of which can require
royalty payment for use to MPEG-LA. Prior to the meeting, Cisco
attempted to break the logjam by releasing an H.264 module that
anyone could use, that it would turn into an open source project, and
announcing that it agreed to pay licensing fees for use.

Video Conference Tools for Small Business
Story and images by Mike Gingerich / Business 2 Community
Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses can go High Tech!
One of the benefits of the fast changing and ever-evolving world of digital
technology is the advancements in tools and features available for small
businesses. For example, only a few years ago, video conferencing was a
tool only for the big corporations. It was expensive, required some robust
hardware and software, and was therefore out of the reach of most small
and medium sized businesses.
Now, however, affordable and even free video conferencing is available to
any business.
Here are three tools for hosting online video conference meetings
that any business can use.

me to the wrong hotel. "With a video meeting, it's just
one virtual meeting room in the online space. There's no
