The“clinic”daysgiveeveryoneachancetoplayandlearnabouttheinstrumentstheywouldliketoplayduringtheseason.Thesedayswillbelow-stress,andthefocuswillbeonsettingeachindividualupforasuccessfulseason.Aftereachclinicdaystudentswillbegivenfeedback,andmaybeaskedtotryadifferentinstrumentatthenextclinicday.TheDrumLinewillbesetattheconclusionofthe“FinalClinic”.YoumustattendeachclinicdaytobeintheDrumLine.

Expectations

PositionsintheDrumLineEveryonewhowantstobeintheBlazeBandDrumLinecanbe.Whileitwouldbenicetogiveeveryoneaspotontheirfirstchoiceofinstrument,weonlyhaveacertainnumberofdrumsatBlackman,andwealsoneedtohavecertainratiosofeachinstrumenttosoundgood.Beopentolearningsomethingnewandunexpected.Dependingonhowmanypeopleaudition,wemaymarchwith:7SnareDrums4-6Quads6BassDrums6Racks5-8Cymbals

GeneralApproach
• Relaxed-Asyouplay,staycompletelyrelaxedfromyourwaistup.Weneedtoplaywiththetophalfofourbody,whilethebottomhalfgetsuswhereweneedtogo
• Rebounded-Eachstroke,highorlow,willutilizereboundfromthedrumthesameway• WristInitiated-Eachstrokeisinitiatedfromthewrist.Bendatthewristasifknocking
onadoor(Bassdrumswillrotateasifopeningadoorknob).Donotliftthestickbyopeningupthefingersorbyraisingthearm
StrokeTypes• Full-startupandendup;utilizethenaturalreboundofthestick• Down-startupandenddown;usetheweightofyourrelaxedhandtostopthestick

LeftHand-Theleftstickwillsitinthewebbedarea(fulcrum)betweenthethumbandfirstfinger.Thefingers
wewillthenmakearelaxed“C”shape.Thethumbwilltouchthefirstfingeratthelastknuckle;themiddle
fingershouldalwaysstayincontactwiththestick.The

PlayingZones
Properplayingzonesarecrucialforsoundqualityandeaseofmovementaroundthedrums.
• Beadsareplacedapproximately1½inchesfromtherim,directlyinthe“sweetspot.”
Thesmaller“spock”drumwillbeplayeddirectlyinthecenter.
• A“teedup”approachisusedfortheouterdrums.Theoutsidehandwillbeslightly
fartherforwardwhenontheseoutsidedrums.
Crossovers
Whencrossingover,itisvitaltomaintainsoundquality,technique,andheights.Therearetwo
typesofcrossovers:
• Thethumbcrossoverisperformeddirectlyatthethumbsorfulcrum.Usedbetween
twoadjacentdrums.
• Thewristcrossoverisperformeddirectlywherethewristturnstoexecuteastroke.
Usedbetweendrums1-2drumsapart.
Notation
Bass Drum GripThefulcrumislocatedbetweenthethumbandtheindexfinger.Thebuttofthestickshouldlineupwiththebottomofyourpinkyfinger.Thefingersshouldbewrappednaturallyaroundthestick.Theyshouldbelooseandrelaxedbutcanneverleavethestick.The

Playingposition
Fromarelaxedstandingposition,armshangingatyourside,raiseyourforearmsuntiltheyareparalleltotheground.Yourhandshouldbeanextensionofyourforearm,neither
breakinginorout,upordown.Themalletheadshouldbeinthecenterofthedrum,about½aninchawayfromthe
surface.Alwaysadjustthedrumtoyou.Yourhandshouldbe
asclosetherimaspossiblewithouttouching.
Rotation
Unlikeasnaredrum,thestrokeusedtoplaythebassdrumisinitiatedbyarotationofthe
forearm.Thefingersshouldopenupastheheightsgethigher.Themalletwillfollowan
ellipticalpathduringaproperrotation.
Splits
Alsounlikeasnaredrum,bassdrummersplaypartsthataresplitacrossallofthebassdrums.Yourmostimportanttoolinfindingyoursplitnoteisyourfeet.
