The Tanga Development Corridor (TDC) initiative is designed to link the Tanga port on the Indian Ocean, the Great Lake Zones and to the border with Uganda and Kenya.
In Tanzania, Regions under the TDC are Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Mara
The TDC intends to create an economic growth region, which will stimulate cross border trade and investment, especially in physical infrastructure, agriculture, minerals, industries and the tourism sectors.
The development endeavors of the TDC are intended to be undertaken by three states of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda
Tanga Development Corridor
CURRENT STATUS
The Institutional Framework for planning and consultations from grass roots level to the Regional and National Level, as well as interstate consultations to be agreed soon.
The exact geographical area of the TDC in Tanzania has already been defined
The area for other member state will be decided after consultations
Project scoping and profiling is ongoing.

ECONOMIC GENERATORS
Lake Natron Soda Ash Project Pare Copper Project Gemstones Mining Projects Gold mining Agriculture Livestocks Development Tourism Development Industries Export Processing Zones/Special Economic Zones
Lake Natron Soda Ash Project
The project will involve setting up of Soda Ash processing plant near the lake, with the capacity of 500,000 metric tones per annum ( MTPA) of natural Soda Ash and later on to be expanded to at least 1,000,000 MPTA.
The initial project investment has been estimated at US $ 300 Million with commercial production commencement in 2009. The project on completion is expected to create about 500 jobs as direct employment and over 2000 jobs indirectly.
Industrial uses of Soda Ash
The Soda Ash has extensive application in industry, households and agriculture. It is therefore a basic chemical industry in Tanzania
The Soda can be used in the production of Sheet Glass, Bottles and Glass: production of alkali carbonates, organic chemicals, soap, pulp and paper, cleaning and dying of cotton fabrics; Desulphurisation of pig iron; refining of water, oil, salts, etc. Blazing of clutch wove, enamel ware, etc; manufacture of detergents, dye stuff, etc.
Project Implementation
The National Development Corporation (NDC) and TATA Chemicals Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understating (MOU) for development and implementation of the Project.
Carrying out due diligence and confirmatory studies on going
Investors will be required to participate as equity investors, financiers, equipment suppliers, contractors, O & M, etc
Pare Copper Project
Limited trenching and some diamonds drilling were conducted in the project area during the second half of 1950’s and two open pits were established at Pare Copper Mine Ltd area.
Indications of high copper grade mineralisation were reported with a major thrust zone strike of 15 kilometres long containing small but very rich copper deposits from Mwanga to Lembeni.
NDC is mobilizing financial resources for carrying out feasibility study, including drilling exploration, to determine the economics of developing copper deposits for commercial exploitation.
Gemstones
Tanzania is endowed with various types of colored gemstones including the beautiful Tanzanite (blue zoisite) occurring in the corridor, particularly in Arusha and Mara regions.
Tanzanite is mined at Mererani from weathered rock, sometimes in association with bands, which are also of commercial value. Other gemstones found in the area include ruby, rhodolite, sapphire, emerald, amethyst, chrysoprase, peridot and tormaline.
Official gemstone exports were approximately US$10 million in 1996 majority of which were exported uncut.
Great potential exists in the establishment of lapidary and jewelry manufacturing industry.
Tourism
Tanga Development Corridor lies in the Northern Tourism Circuit (Fig.3) which includes the following tourist attractions:
Mountains:
Kilimanjaro, Pare and Usambara ranges, Ngorongoro Crater
National Parks and the wildlife resources:
Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Kilimanjaro.
Historical features: Oldvai and Amboni cave systems
Investment Opportunities
The major investment opportunities are in the provision of the tourist accommodation facilities in the National parks including permanent Luxury Tented camps, Wildlife lodges, Special campsites (luxury but temporary) and Fly camps (one time use).
Establishment of world class tourist hotels in the major cities such as Arusha and Kilimanjaro
Provision of infrastructures to support the tourism growth including transport and other supportive services.
MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES
In relation to industries there is an opportunity to create and develop Agro based industries at Tanga port in respect to food processing and preservation of food products, oil milling, flour milling; meat processing and leather and diary industries; coffee and sisal processing and related industries; timber/wood, furniture, and related products; glass; soap; detergents (soda ash) and fertilizers.
EPZ/SEZ
Investment Opportunities in KIA and Tanga Port are:
Gemstone Cutting and Jewelry Industry Oil Seeds Processing and Exporting Horticulture and export of flowers Fruit processing Industries Leather Industries goods Sisal rope and twine and sisal bags
SEZ/EPZ Cont.
Other industries considered potentially viable with strong backward linkages while not necessarily appropriate for the Tanga port/Airport are: Furniture industry; Ceramics industry; Tea and coffee processing; Seafood processing/canning, including seaweed processing; Fruit processing/canning; Assembly of low-price, low-tech consumer goods.
Challenges
To sustain adequate political commitment and championship from respective Governments.
To strengthen and sustain effective and consistent participation of key stakeholders especially from the private sector
Mobilization of financing to support expert participation, project preparation and implementation.
Conclusion and Way Forward
