TAIPAN Workshop Discussion
AAO, 6 August 2013
Issues for discussion - 1
What are the instrumental limitations? Primarily # of fibres/starbugs - 150 vs 300 Are other instrument parameters okay?
Strategy for marrying the various surveys: cosmology + galaxy evolution + peculiar
velocities What about pushing into north? into ZoA?
Making the survey simulations more realistic How can they be improved?
What are best targets for cosmology survey? LRGs or ELGs? Trade speed/bias/selectability etc.
Issues for discussion – 2
Survey source catalogues/photometry? What are the options? VHS? SkyMapper? Who will do the large amount of work?
Is TAIPAN ‘pointy’ or ‘legacy’? What’s its angle? Local universe? Multi-
wavelength? What is most valuable additional science?
Galaxy evolution, groups, dwarfs, radio/HI…?
Tweak survey parameters to optimize this science?
E.g. going fainter picks up many more EMU sources
