The following referral booklet provides you with easy access to Counselling
Psychologists in your local community. Counselling Psychologists are
registered Medicare and private health fund providers.
This booklet is linked to our website (www.counsellingpsychologists.org),
with a search function to help you find Counselling Psychologists in specific
regions or to identify practitioners with a specific interest or expertise. You
will find a guide to areas of practice and locality in the index.
Counselling Psychology
Counselling Psychology is the second largest of the nine areas of practice
endorsement, recognised by the Psychology Board of Australia.
Endorsement of a psychologist's registration is a legal mechanism under
the National Law to identify practitioners who have an additional
qualification and advanced supervised practice recognised by the
Psychology Board of Australia.
Counselling Psychologists provide assessment, formulation, diagnosis and
psychotherapy to individuals, couples, families, children and groups, and
work in a wide range of settings, including private practice, GP clinics,
hospitals, sexual abuse treatment and support services, military and
veteran’s support, prisons, child protection, peri‐natal mental health
centres, relationship centres, and in a variety of other community agencies.

Association of Counselling Psychologists
The Association of Counselling Psychologists (ACP) is an independent
representative body for Counselling Psychologists in Australia. For the past
23 years the ACP has been addressing the needs of our members, referring
practitioners and people in the community who require the expertise of a
Counselling Psychologist.
All practitioners in this booklet are members of the ACP and are
Counselling Psychologists with an area of practice endorsement (section 1),
or a Registered Psychologist (who has completed a Masters of Counselling
Psychology), and may be working towards the area of practice
endorsement (section 2).
If you have any queries, or would like to request more copies of the
booklet, please contact us at [email protected]

What is a Counselling Psychologist?
Counselling Psychologists use their knowledge and understanding of
psychology, psychotherapy, and mental health to treat a wide range of
psychological problems, and mental health disorders. Counselling
Psychologists provide assessment, formulation, diagnosis and
psychotherapy for individuals, couples, families and groups across the
lifespan. Counselling Psychologists use evidence‐based therapies to assist
clients to resolve mental health disorders or psychological problems and
move toward greater psychological health. They research, evaluate, and
develop new methods for improving psychological health and therapeutic
interventions for psychological disorders.
The minimum standard of training for a Counselling Psychologist is 8 years,
including accredited post‐graduate training through a Masters, Doctorate,
or PhD in Counselling Psychology, followed by supervised practice in the
field. Counselling Psychologists are rigorously assessed for their
competence with a particular focus on managing complex and challenging
cases.
Counselling Psychologists receive advanced training in psychopathology to
work with a wide range of complex psychological problems and disorders
such as depression, anxiety, self‐esteem, eating disorders, post‐traumatic
stress and personality disorders. They also assist people with challenging or
viii
prolonged difficulties encountered in the usual course of living, such as
bereavement, intimacy issues, relationship breakdown, transition to
parenthood, attachment issues, adjustment to step‐parenting, involuntary
redundancy, sexual assault or abuse, or release from prison. Counselling
Psychologists work in a wide range of settings, including private practice,
GP clinics, hospitals, sexual abuse treatment and support services, military
and veteran’s support, prisons, child protection, peri‐natal mental health
centres, relationship centres, and in a variety of other community agencies.
Individual Psychotherapy
Counselling Psychologists are trained in a wider range of psychotherapy
techniques than any other area of endorsement. This includes a diverse
range of evidence‐based therapies and common treatment factors. They
frequently provide eclectic or integrative treatments inclusive of but not
limited to, cognitive‐behaviour therapy, interpersonal therapy, brief
dynamic, psychodynamic and existential psychotherapy. Counselling
Psychologists tailor their therapeutic
approach to meet the unique needs of
individual clients, paying close attention
to aligning treatment with the context
of a specific case, and the personal
values and meaning system of the
individual client.
ix
Couple and Family Therapy
Counselling psychologists provide assessment, formulation, interventions
and treatment to families across the lifespan. They assist people with
difficult transitions in relationships that create adjustment issues, such as
forming a new relationship, having children, and ageing. They are
competent in attachment‐based approaches that facilitate understanding
of interpersonal dynamics. Treatment is directed towards developing
greater satisfaction and wellbeing by improving communication,
developing emotional and physical intimacy, resolving conflict and
respecting individual differences.
Counselling psychologists recognise and treat complex presentations that
injure interpersonal relationships, working with people to facilitate
understanding and minimise distress to significant others.
Group Therapy
Counselling psychologists also receive in‐depth training in the delivery of
group‐based psychotherapies. They are skilled in the design and facilitation
of groups for both psycho‐education and therapeutic purposes. Across a
range of settings and client populations, Counselling Psychologists develop
and apply group interventions tailored to the specific needs of agencies,
programs, and individuals seeking support.
