LO1 – Photographic AnalysisPhotographer: Robert JahnsRobert Jahns is known for creating odd, unique and surreal images, whether that be edited or unedited, and putting them online. His images do not follow the usual logical techniques or things you would expect to see in a photograph. He has taken real images from extraordinary places like the top of buildings or the plains of the wild, but is also extremely skilled with photoshop to create illogical and surreal images.Photograph #1

Summary/Category - This is a photo by Robert Jahns, of an astronaut at the International Space Station taking a selfie in orbit around Earth. The photographic category is surreal. Surreal photography uses the element of surprise, unexpected contradictory elements and juxtapositions and illogical scenes to create unique images innit.Purpose – The photograph was taken to create a sense of awe in the image for the viewer. It also gives a sense of scale of the Earth, knowing how high up the astronaut is and how close it still seems that he is to the planet. There is also a sense of scale created by the lights in the image – for example the patch of light to the top left of the astronaut’s helmet is the huge city of Madrid, and it looks tiny in the grand scale of the photo.

Composition – There is a small cohesion to the rule of thirds in this photo. The astronaut’s helmet takes up the central third of the frame & the Earth in the background takes up around 5 of the 9 sections in the rule of thirds grid.Lighting – All of the lighting is from the Sun, however the flashes of light behind the camera are from city lighting such as streetlights and houses.Focus – There is no out-of-focus effect on this image, the entire image is in focus. This is an example of depth of field.Framing – There are 3 subjects in this image. These are;The Astronaut,The Earth,The reflection of the camera & the space stationThe astronaut is the main focus of the image in the centre of the frame, with the stunning view of the Earth in the background as the secondary focus. The earth is positioned to fill the frame. The third focus is in the visor’s reflection, which is in the direct centre of frame. We see the camera & the space station.Cropping – The Image was most likely a raw photo, with no Photoshop editing or cropping present.Meaning – The meaning of this image is making a statement of how far humans have come. We see the earth in the background, and man in the foreground – as well as seeing a man-made structure in space in the reflection. The image leaves the viewer in awe and wondering how it happened.

Summary – This is an image of a patch of forest in a field, with clouds overhead. The category of this image is surreal.Purpose – The purpose of this image is to display the dramatic landscape of the country – it would most likely be used in a gallery and displayed on a large wall or printed for use in homes, as it would make a good canvas wall photograph.

This would most likely generate income from re-prints, and being sold to the public, as it is an appealing image to many.Composition and Framing – The main focus of this image is the small forest. There are 2 other focuses of the photo, which are the field’s grass and the sky above. These 3 work together well as the main focus is surrounded by the 2 secondary focuses, and they all join in the centre of the image. Image Analysis - The use of high contrast, high saturation and a low brightness works well in this image – it gives it a much more dramatic feel and, in a way makes both the sky and the field look more imposing and the small forest look more vulnerable. The forest and sky look to go on forever, and the vast expanse adds to the effect of the vulnerable, small trees. The lighting in this image changes throughout – some patches are well lit, others are not. This gives the image more happening within it – it makes it more detailed and interesting. There is a high depth of field on this image, which means that most of it is in focus.Meaning – The meaning of this image is physical imposition. The image is very dramatic, due to the contrast of the image and the illusion that the field and sky go on forever. The forest is made to look small and threatened by the rest of the aspects of the image.
