The Order is the highest decoration in France. It was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802.

Amongst past recipients of the award are the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, and US President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Dr. Kantor received the award, presented by H.E. Ambassador Philippe Etienne, Permanent Representative of the French Republic to the European Union, for working towards the rights of minorities, promoting interfaith relations, leading the fight against racism and anti-Semitism and pushing for a more tolerant Europe.

Memorial session was hosted at the European Parliament, under the patronage of its new President, Mr. Martin Schulz, who declared: ”The Shoah is an incomparable unique tragedy and the most tragic case of genocide in the history of mankind. It is our duty to remember. We wish to remember for a purpose: to ensure that never again will evil prevail, as it did for the millions of innocent victims of Nazism”.

This year marked 70 years since the infamous Wannsee Conference and 50 years since the end of the trial of Adolf Eichmann.The President of EJC, who spares no effort to

preserve the memory of the biggest tragedy of the Jewish people, said: “If we do not

remember and learn about the Holocaust, we can never be confident we can recognize evil and stop its emergence in time”.

“Today we look to the East, to Iran, and we face again a regime that abuses its own citizens, that threatens the only democratic state of the Jewish people, and threatens the very destruction of Western civilization”.

“We are witnessing a rise in anti-Semitism; European leaders should do all they can to fight this dangerous phenomenon as it threatens not only the Jews but also peaceful life in Europe”.
