Success at the Petite AnseReef Restoration Project

Following the launch of the Petite Anse ReefRestoration Project with our marine education andconservation partner WiseOceans in March 2015, weare thrilled to share the news that already over 1,000fragments of coral have been placed in the CoralNursery, and that the first of these fragments have beenpermanently transplanted onto the reef to help preservethe overall ecosystem of the bay.

The Project, which aims to protect and nurture 10,000square metres (100,000 square feet) of limestone reefin the Resort’s horseshoe bay, is scheduled to takeplace over a three year period. During this time,WiseOceans aims to transplant 16,000 fragments ofnaturally damaged broken coral onto small metalsupports that will be hung underwater in the CoralNursery. In this environment, the coral is able to grow to a more robust size and secure itself firmly to its support.

Once large enough, the coral fragments are transplanted to bare areas of the reef where they will grow happily intolarge, healthy coral colonies to provide food and habitat, and allowing other species of marine life, such as turtles,to thrive. With the successful growth of the first nursery fragments, WiseOceans is already able to begintransplanting coral fragments to bare areas of reef, aiding the recovery of the Petite Anse reef.

Stationed at the Resort’s Coral Cabana just metresfrom the beach, the team of WiseOceans MarineEducators ensure daily monitoring of the Coral Nurseryand provide regular guided snorkelling excursions forguests, sharing their expert insights on all of the variousmarine life that calls Petite Anse bay home.
