Unseen Poetry.
Today you would have had me for 2 lessons so there
are 2 different lessons for you to complete. Both link
to unseen poetry which we have been focussing on.
Lesson 1:
This is comparing the 2 poems we have been looking
at.
First plan 3 points for each poem which focusses on
their feelings towards their children.
Then write the answer. Remember to link back to
balanced debates and use conjunctions to compare
answers.
Lesson 2:
Nettles Poem.
In this lesson, you will be looking to infer what you
think has happened to the author to enable him to
produce this poem.
You will also discuss the vocabulary usage and he
impact this has on the reader.
This is our dedicated Reading Lesson.
Read chapter 3 and 4 of 'The Maze Runner’ by James
Dashner (Chapter 3 starts on p19 of the pdf)
When you have read the chapters, try to find at least
three different language techniques that the author
has used.
Write down each quotation and what technique you
think it uses.
Please send your work to my email below.
To commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day on the 27th
January we are asking students to create a piece of art
work, poetry or creative writing piece with the title
being ‘Be the Light in the Darkness’
This years theme asks everyone to consider different
kinds of ‘darkness’, for example identity-based
persecution, misinformation, denial of justice; and
then also different ways of being the ‘light’ for
example, resistance, acts of solidarity, rescue and
illuminating mistrusts.
For more information see the Support Links below
Deadline: 26th January with the winner announced on
the 27th
Challenge Activity Challenge Activity Challenge Activity
Use the word ‘connotation’ in your answer. Can you
single out pieces of figurative language- is there a
similar example in each piece?
For each quote you have found (3 in total), briefly
describe the effect that the language technique has.
Explain the writer’s intentions and the impact on the
reader.
2- Can you think of alternate pieces of language the
poet could have used to evoke an emotional
response? Write down some examples.
Scaffolding/Support Scaffolding/Support Scaffolding/Support
Use the sentence stems on the PowerPoint to help
structure your answer.
2- Answer the following questions:
What might have happened to the poet to enable him
to write this? What might he have experienced?
Choose some pieces of vocabulary (words or phrases)
which have an emotional impact on the reader.
Explain how your examples might make the reader
feel emotional.

Lessons 4 and 5 Unseen Poetry The focus is on language and imagery in a poem. The poem is ‘A child’s sleep’ by Carol Ann Duffy. Before you follow the slides in the PowerPoint, read the poem through. Make a note of any personal thoughts, feelings or imagery that the poem evokes. All questions which refer to the reader apply to you, you are the reader. It is important to establish a connection with the poem and develop confidence in your ability to analyse and subvert (find a deeper meaning). Carefully annotate the first slides, which provide guidance on analysing tone and imagery. Complete the activities carefully and in as much detail as you can. Proof-read your work and check for errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Narrative (story) openings
Read the opening chapter to ‘Chico Boy’ by Gina
Hooten Pop (what a great name!) This is the
‘blurb’;
When Chico Boy and his friend witness a possible
murder, they go on the run until they can get all
the facts. In a series of twists and turns, they find
themselves hiding out at church camp. After all,
they reason—“No one would murder a kid at
church camp, would they?”
Task:
Read the opening chapter and write a paragraph
explaining what you think would make the reader
want to continue reading this book
