Learn how the work of enslaved individuals such as William Lee, Caroline Brannum, and Christopher Sheels made Mount Vernon a successful 18th-century plantation. The daily lives of the enslaved men, women, and children, as well as the hardships they endured, are discussed. The evolution of Washington’s views on the institution of slavery is also presented.

From 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., experience 18th-century plantation life at Mount Vernon during this unique program! at the Pioneer Farm, students encounter costumed interpreters producing 18th-century goods; learn about George Washington’s innovative farming practices; visit the reconstructed Slave Cabin; play colonial games; and see farm animals. Students may also participate in a special ceremony at Washington’s Tomb.
