Fr. Chris’ Corner Continued
Dear friends in the Lord, As I mentioned last weekend, our Social Justice Commission is partnering with Cross Catholic Outreach this year for our Lenten Project: Carry the Cross. Together as a community, we are going to pray, fast, and give alms in order to make a difference in the lives of young boys and girls in Meru County, Kenya. These are orphans and vulnerable children who live in a region torn by poverty, division, and violence. Through this project we will help to provide nutritious meals and a quality Catholic education. Fr. Francis is a priest in that region who believes that God has called him to rescue hundreds of orphans and street children. This man trusts Jesus and knows the Lord’s love can redeem and heal children with deep wounds from troubled pasts. His ministry is comprised of three separate outreaches: St. Francis Home for boys; St. Clare Home for girls, and the recently added St. Philomena Home for children infected with the HIV/AIDS virus. Rescued from their fate of wandering in Kenya’s dark and lonely streets, these precious children now know they are valued children of God. Today, more than 1000 children receive nutritious food, an education, Catholic spiritual formation and a safe place to call home. Even with the expansion and growth of the ministry, the most pressing need remains the same: providing food and education. Since many of these children arrive at the Homes malnourished, nutrition is paramount to their upbringing and success in life. Fr. Francis utilizes sustainable farming techniques to help lower the costs, but much help is still needed. In the same way, education is equally important to develop young minds. Many of these children arrive with little to no education so Fr. Francis puts them on a plan to allow them to learn at their own pace and catch up to their peers. In order for us to support their mission to these children, I am asking that you join me in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. We will distribute a prayer card that you can take home to pray. We will also offer that same prayer at Mass right after communion before the announcements. As you know, we refrain from meat on Fridays, but I would like you to join me in fasting on Wednesdays. Fasting would entail having only one main meal, and if necessary, two smaller meals. Lastly, I am asking that you join me in almsgiving as well. Each week of Lent, we are going to have a special collection for these children. Believe it or not, to feed and educate one child is only $60. Since there are 6 Sundays of Lent, I am asking if you will join me in offering an additional $10 a week so that by Easter, each of us will be sponsoring one child.
Thank you so much for your generosity and love as we help Carry the Cross for these children. There is no cross to bear that Christ has not already borne for us, and does not now bear with us. And on the far side of every cross we find the newness of life in the Holy Spirit, that new life which will reach its fulfillment in the resurrection. Faithfully yours in the Lord, Fr. Chris

On February 5th, the students going on the Spring Mission Trip in March to Demont, IA hosted a Trivia Night fundraiser. There were nine teams and over 85 people who participated in this fun and exciting event. There were eight rounds of trivia categories varying from science to Disney to sports. Between the rounds, teams challenged each other to do things like play leap frog or dance an Irish jig for $1. Also, there was a round of "Heads-or-Tails". Overall, the fundraiser was a massive success raising around $730. Thank you to all that came to the event in support of the students to go to Demont, IA.

For Your Information
Hilltop Food Pantry and Social Justice Commission would like to thank you for all of your wonderful donations. It took five trucks/SUV’s
completely loaded to deliver 263 bags of goods to the pantry. The pantry director was overwhelmed by the generosity of the St. Teresa’s community. You truly are a blessing by providing for those in need so that they can serve those God puts in their path. Many thanks also to those who pitched in on January 31 to load, transport, and then unload all of these items. We greatly appreciate everyone’s effort. Social Justice Commission
