LITURGY NOTES There will be NO CONFESSIONS on the Tuesdays of August. There will be Confessions on Thursdays 5:30 -6:30 PM.
SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Monday’s schedule of Masses for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation this year since it falls on a Monday, is: 8:30 AM English Mass and 7:00 PM Bilingual Mass. Since Mary was preserved free from all stain of original sin, her body was spared earthly decay. She was taken up into heaven body and soul once her earthly life was over. Since Mary was the mother of Jesus and the first to believe in him, she was raised by Him to the glorified life of heaven. It is, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, "a singular participation in her Son's Resurrection" (no. 966). Mary is also a symbol of the Church and a model for all Christians. The Assumption of Mary is the realization of the hope that all believers share. Her entrance into Heaven is a sign of the promise made by Jesus that one day we too will be received into paradise.
O almighty and merciful God, Lord of the universe and of history, all that You have created is good and your compassion for the mistakes of mankind knows no limits. We come to You today to ask You to keep in peace the world and its people, to keep far away from it the devastating wave of terrorism, to restore friendship and instill in the hearts of your creatures the gift of trust and of readiness to forgive. O Giver of life, we pray to You also for all those who have died as victims of brutal terrorist attacks. Grant them their eternal reward. May they intercede for the world that is torn apart by conflicts and disagreements. O Jesus, Prince of Peace, we pray to You for the ones who have been wounded in these acts of inhuman violence: children and young people, old people and innocent people accidentally involved in evil. Heal their bodies and hearts; console them with Your strength and, at the same time, take away any hatred and a desire for revenge. Holy Spirit Consoler, visit the families of the victims of terrorism, families that suffer through no fault of their own.
Wrap them in the mantle of Your divine mercy. Make them find again in You and in themselves the strength and courage to continue to be brothers and sisters for others, above all for immigrants, giving witness to Your love by their lives. Touch the hearts of terrorists so that they may recognize the evil of their actions and may turn to the way of peace and goodness, of respect for the life and for the dignity of every human being, regardless of religion, origin, wealth or poverty. O God, Eternal Father, in Your mercy hear our prayer which we raise up to You amidst the deafening noise and desperation of the world. We turn to You with great hope, full of trust in Your infinite Mercy. Made strong by the examples of the blessed martyrs of Perú, Zbigniew and Michael, who have rendered courageous testimony to the Gospel, to the point of offering their blood, we entrust ourselves to the intercession of Your Most Holy Mother. We ask for the gift of peace and of the elimination from our midst of the sore of terrorism. Through Christ our Lord.

Ministry and Continuing Education for Adults Because Our Faith is too Rich to have ever Learned it All…
Contact Heidi Clark, Director of Adult Ministry, 281.333.3891, Ext. 328 or [email protected] for more information.
Adult faith formation at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church is centered around the understanding that living
“The Way” taught by Jesus Christ is a life-long, evolving journey, involving both effort and decision. To enable adults to explore the
faith and deepen their knowledge of God’s Word, we provide many opportunities to come together in a learning environment. As a
diverse community with a small parish feel, we know it is important to walk that journey with others and to share what we have
learned along the way.
Do you want to be Catholic? Then please join us at the weekly Inquiry session that takes place every Sunday after the 9 AM Mass. The group meets in the Conference Room from about 10:15-11 AM. Contact Heidi at [email protected] for information.
Next Sunday’s Mass Themes Next Sunday is the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time and we continue our reading of the Gospel of Luke (12:5-7, 11-13) where a question is posed to Jesus about who will be saved, and he takes the opportunity to warn his fellow Jews against assuming that their status as children of Abraham guarantees them anything. The possibility is real of being excluded from the kingdom.
Next Men’s ACTS Retreat Registrations are being taken to attend the next men’s ACTS retreat scheduled for Thursday, Sept.1, to Sunday, Sept. 4. To get one, contact Bob Milmoe, 409.795.7227.
Pope Francis on Hypocrites “When God told Jonah to go to Nineveh to condemn the sin of the people, Jonah fled. This is the Jonah Syndrome…and Jesus condemns it. For example, in Chapter 23 of Matthew’s Gospel, those who have this syndrome are called hypocrites. They do not want the poor to be saved. The Jonah Syndrome afflicts those without zeal for the conversion of others; what they are looking for is a holiness, if I may say, a holiness they can pick up at the dry cleaners. It is cleaned and pressed, but wholly lacking in the zeal that leads us to preach and proclaim the Lord.”
--Homily, Domus Sanctae Marthae October 14, 2013
Confirmation for Adults If you or someone you know is a baptized Catholic who has received first Eucharist but has not been confirmed, please contact Heidi Clark to make arrangements to complete your sacraments of initiation: 281.333.3891, Ext. 328 or [email protected].
Men Who Cook Thank you to everyone who came out to support Men Who Cook, especially the cooks and volunteers who made the delicious evening the tasty success that it was!
Christian Ministry Formation This fall, St. Paul is once again honored and excited to host the diocesan education program called Formation toward Christian Ministry. This exciting and enriching program is meant for Catholics who want to deepen their commitment to Jesus and more fully answer their baptismal call to understand the Word of God and serve as His disciple. This fall’s classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 PM, and the topics that will be offered include Catholic Beliefs (basic concepts in Christian theology and doctrine), Christology (Who the Church understands Jesus to be), and Sacraments (including the liturgy). Classes are $50 per semester unless you are actively involved in ministry at St. Paul, in which case the fee is reduced to $25. Classes begin Wednesday, August 24. Registration forms are at the Welcome Center.
Prayer Shawl Ministry If you enjoy knitting, or would even like to learn, our prayer shawl ministry needs you. This group of knitters meets twice monthly, on the 2nd and 4th Thursday, to prayerfully knit shawls for people who are ill, home-bound, or who would otherwise be blessed from knowing that our community is praying for them. They gather from 3-5 PM in Parlor A. Their meetings resume Thursday, September 8.
A Pro-Life Request from the Texas Catholic Conference
The state of Texas intends to kill two individuals (Robert Pruett and Jeff Woods) on August 23 and 24, 2016. In both cases, there are strong indicators that the defendants may be innocent. A gross misuse of justice does not serve the victims, our society or those who have been sentenced to death. Please consider joining the bishops, through the Texas Catholic Conference, in requesting a stay of execution for both Robert Pruett and Jeff Wood. You may write to both the Texas governor and the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles at the addresses below: The Honorable Greg Abott Texas Board of Pardons Governor's Office and Paroles P.O. Where did our summer go? It seems like June and July lasted 5 seconds! Our little Pre-school resumes classes on August 29th. It is not too late to enroll your little one. We offer a warm nurturing environment that encourages curiosity, imagination and creativity. Give us a call today or more information can be found on the church website under the Children’s ministry tab. Celebrate the end of summer with a theme party like:
Olympic Game night-set up some games in the back yard and have your own family Olympic night, Luau night-dress everyone up in a Hawaiian shirt and get some leis from the dollar store. Have a hula hoop contest and
teriyaki kabobs for dinner. Take the time to enjoy the last days of summer.
Staff Changes: Katie Mahoney, Youth Ministry Director and David Rofrano, Music Ministry Director, loved members of our St. Paul family and our parish staff, said goodbye this week as God leads them to the next steps in their ministries. We wish them His continued Blessings and thank them for the gifts
they have shared with us here at St. Paul. Both, through their unique skills and talents have left their handprints indelibly printed on our hearts individually, and as a parish. Thank you to the volunteers in each of these ministries who are helping us continue with activities while we search to fill these two positions.
