Observing a Holy Lent
by the Rev. Jon Hall
The gospel of Mark offers stark themes for this
particular Lenten season. The development of this
gospel shows a messiah who lives with frustration
and pain. Instead of a messiah who brings political
stability, as they had expected, the focus is on his
suffering. Marks depiction of Christ parallels the
suffering of the early church believers under
Neros persecution.
Mark consistently points out that the ruling
powers, and none of the disciples, understand
who Jesus is until the latter part of the gospel.
Then Mark reveals a distinction between those
who understand who this servant of God is, for
the sake of the world as Gods good and

St. Martins has published a
booklet of reflections based on
the daily readings throughout

A new logo
for St. Martins
The beautiful mosaic on the
front of our church is the
inspiration for a new logo for
St. Martins Episcopal Church.
Mary Drastal created the
original mosaic design and was
the driving force behind the
logos creation. Mary has just
finished serving as a member of
our vestry. She is an artist (and
art teacher), but wanted to find
a graphic artist to handle this
project. Holly Heyde, Erv and
Mary K Heydes daughter,
began working on the project
last year. She designed several
drafts for us. St. Martins
member Robin Ragsdale joined
the artistic team and put the
finishing touches on the project
early this year.
Look for the new logo on our
website, our letterhead and all
our church publications. If you
would like to use the logo on
any materials for ministries
within our church, please

Suffering and redemption, continued from page 1redeemable creation, and those
who would not recognize Jesus
at all. Remember that when the
curtain, or veil, between heav-
en and earth was torn that
even the Roman soldier saw clearly and
believed that Jesus was the Son of God.
Mark led the early believers to
recognize that their suffering did not go
unnoticed by God. What seemed like a
series of failures to overcome the de-
moralizing circumstances of their worlds
power structure turned into the greatest
gift possible to the Church:
that nothing could separate
them from Gods presence.
As the community claimed
that gift they were empow-

What if what you did for Lent this
year is to let Jesus love you? What could
be better, letting love, acceptance and
healing deepen in you that it may then
spread throughout the world? Partici-
pating in The Week of Guided Prayer
could be a wonderful way to do the will
of God.
A Week of Guided Prayer is an
individually-directed retreat made during
the course of everyday life. Throughout
the week each participant spends thirty
minutes a day in private prayer and
meets privately with his/her prayer guide
for thirty minutes each day. The confi-
dential, one-on-one meetings with
prayer guides take place in the after-
noons or evenings, at the convenience
of each participant. Prayer guides are
not members of our parish, nor may
companion anyone they know.
The format of this retreat offers
opportunities to:
Explore different ways of praying.
Speak privately with an
experienced prayer guide.
Become more aware of Gods
presence in your life.
Go on retreat while staying at
home.
Participate in an ecumenical
retreat invite your friends from
other parishes and/or
denominations.
Since each participant is unique (as well
as each prayer guide), exactly what
happens during the retreat is different
for each person. The prayer guidelistens and responds with a welcoming,
non-judgmental, compassionate
presence not only to the participant,
but also to Gods Spirit moving in their
midst.
There is no registration fee, but a $44
suggested donation to help with the
cost of the retreat is appreciated.
Week of Guided Prayer offers spiritual retreat
you go behind the huge altar area, or
sanctuary, you can see chapels solely
dedicated to peoples lamentations.
These spaces serve as a reminder to
modern Christians that God cares
about present day sufferings, too.
Perhaps it is during the hardest
times, on the other side of lifes
sanctuary, that our faith offers us the
strength to be with this loving God
who intimately also knew human
suffering. Then we can claim, even a
glimpse, of a way forward with
Christ as our guide.

"Largely to amuse herself, [Gertrude Stein]
wrote The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas in
1932... using as a sounding board her compan-
ion Miss Toklas, who had been with her for
twenty-five years. It has been said that the
writing takes on very much Miss Toklas' con-
versational style, and while this is true the style
is still a variant of Miss Stein's conversation
style. ...She usually insisted that writing is an
entirely different thing from talking, and it is
part of the miracle of this little scheme of ob-
jectification that she could by way of imitating
Miss Toklas put in writing something of herown beautiful conversation. So that, aside from
making a real present of her past, she created a
figure of herself, established an identity a twin,
a Doppelganger.... The book is full of the most
lucid and shapely anecdotes, told in a purer and
more closely fitting prose... than even Gide or
Hemingway have ever commanded .... "

by Heidi Gioia,
Director of Youth Ministries
Last month, I attended a youth
ministry conference and heardKara Powell talk about sticky
faith. She discussed a study that
found 40 - 50% of teens who had
been active in their youth group
lost their faith during the college years.
Despite engaging programming,
missional experiences and strong
relationships in high school, these
college students felt alone in their new
environment. They had left their faith
at home.
Powell offered advice on how to create
a sticky faith, one that supports and
strengthens teens as they gain signifi-
cant independence in college. Id like
to highlight one of the suggestions.:
Create a 5:1 ratio
that is, 5 adults
connected to 1 teen
On the surface, thismay seem unrealistic
and unwanted I cant
imagine any teen
willingly hanging out
with 5 adults on a regular basis. There
will always be a place for teen-centered
programming. But rather than being
relegated to the basement, teens need
to be drawn into relationship with the
larger church. If their only experience with
church is youth group, then they dont see a
place for themselves as a young adult.
Each of us can accomplish this ratio by
getting to know a few teens and sharing
mutual interests. We can ask them
whats going on in their life and then
pray for those things. Another im-
portant way is by hosting intergenera-
tional events like the Lenten program.
We can also invite them to join our
(adult)ministry groups. When teens are given
practice at what it means to be the
church, they are more comfortable
seeking a new church home in early
adulthood.
St. Martins is in a great place to help
create sticky faith. Were cultivating a
vibrant community of connected people.
Our college outreach ministry also
embodies this. Lets continue to involve
our teens in the full life of the church so
they have a lively and loving relationship
with Christ and our church community
for the long run.

Passionate leadership guides Bible studiesChristian stewardship is the grateful and responsible use of God's gifts in the light of God's purpose as
revealed in Jesus Christ. Christian stewards, empowered by the Holy Spirit, commit themselves to conscious,
purposeful decisions.
by Janis Greenbaum
If you stop by St. Martin's on most any day, you're likely to find a lively Bible study group
meeting somewhere in our church. These groups
are all led by members who go above and
beyond the role of "leader." They all have a deep-
seated spirituality and a passion to share their
faith with others. Each of these leaders shows
how stewardship is part of our everyday lives.
Bev Weaver:
Lenten Faith GroupsBev is responsible for instigating, researching and
planning this year's Wednesday evening Lenten
program. After serving as a Stephen Minister for
several years, Bev was looking for a new way to
give back to the church and to find a way to hon-
or Fr. Jon and his vision for our parish. She says
this Faith Group program, which is based on the
concept of Christian Hospitality, is divinely in-
spired. Its the right program at the right time
for our church, Bev said. Its my turn to show
my spiritual connections to St. Martins.

Mary has a contagious enthusiasm for
Bible Study. I began reading the Bible myself
because I was tired of others telling me what it
said, Mary said. As I became more immersed in
my efforts, I wanted to share my enthusiasm with
others. Mary has been leading the (co-ed)
Monday morning group for three years. She
describes the class as a scholarly look at the
Bible. Marys enthusiasm for the Old Testament
led her to begin a second class on Thursdays for
those who have little knowledge or experience
with Bible Study. My faith has grown as I have
begun to understand these ancient writings. The Rev. Virginia Noel
Women's Bible Study
Virginia may be retired as a priest, but she hasnt
stopped serving the church. She continues sharing
her skills through Bible studies and prayer groups
at St. Martin's. Her Tuesday morning classes cater
to women and often feature women in the Bible.
Virginia guides the women in the group to
discover how God is working in their lives every
day.
John Lange:
Men's Bible Study
John is on a life-long faith-seeking journey and is
motivated to invite others to join his quest. He
leads a group of working and retired men in Bible
study every Thursday at 6:30 a.m. The story is
not as simple as we sometimes make it out tobe, John said. He encourages his group to not be
afraid to ask questions, and then pray for and
wrestle with the answers. By studying the Bible,
John hopes to equip his group for ministry
beyond the walls of the church. Its not just a
desire to take it all in, but also a desire to let it all
out.

The Rev. Jon Hall and church
leaders shared their visions for the
new year with members of the
parish at our Jan. 29
Annual Meeting.
Fr. Jon addressed the
congregation and
encouraged all
members to accept an
invitation towards
spiritual growth, by
discerning how God is calling you
to be a servant leader.
Treasurer Larry Cornelius
presented our financial reports,
which include a balanced budget for
2012.
Outgoing Senior Warden Jane
Klieve marked the end of our
congregations transition period and
the first full year of our
life with Father Jon as
our rector. She ex-
pressed her gratitude to
her fellow vestry
members, the staff, all
ministry leaders and
Fr. Jon for all the hard
work that has taken place to have
our church in such a positive
position going in to 2012.
All ministry and financial reports as
well as notes from Fr. Jons address
are available at our website at
stmartinschurch.org.
