A note for visitors: Were thankful that you could join us for worship today, and we pray God blesses you in your time here. The service is printed in your bulletin. If youhave any questions dont hesitate to ask someone around you!
St. Francis Church we want to encourage families to worship together. In order tobe a community where all ages feel welcome, we provide coloring materials for childrento use during worship and seek to understand the speci c gifts and challenges that children bring. We encourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so, to sit toward the front with your children, as little-ones are often more attentive if they can see what ishappening.
We understand that there may be times when it is best to take advantage of child care, and nursury is provided.
Prayer in Preparation for worship:
O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and
of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections we may worship you in spirit and in truth; though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect of the Day: Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.Celebrant: Let us pray.
Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, that we may continually be given to good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you andthe Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading: Amos 5:6-7,10-15 All sit.
A Reading from the book of the prophet Amos.
Seek the Lord and live, lest he break out like re in the house of Joseph, and it devour, with none to quench it for Bethel, O you who turn justice to wormwood, and cast downrighteousness to the earth! They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks the truth. Therefore because you trample upon the poor and take from himexactions of wheat, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them;
you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine. For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sinsyou who af ict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate. Therefore he who is prudent willkeep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time. Seek good, and not evil, that you may live;and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said. Hate evil, and lovegood, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will begracious to the remnant of Joseph.
Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
The Psalm of the day: Psalm 90:12-17
12 So teach us to number our days *that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.
13 Return, O Lord; how long will you tarry? * be gracious to your servants.
14 Satisfy us by your loving-kindness in the morning; *
so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.
15 Make us glad by the measure of the days that you af icted us *and the years in which we suffered adversity.
16 Show your servants your works *and your splendor to their children.

17 May the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; *

Second Reading: Hebrews 4:12-16
A Reading from Pauls letter to the Hebrews.
A Reading from Pauls letter to the Hebrews.
The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing tothe division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts andintentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are open and laid bare to the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, butone who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with
con dence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and nd grace tohelp in time of need.

Holy Gospel: Mark 10:17-31
Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
A nd as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and askedhim, Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said to him,Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments:Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do notdefraud, Honor your father and mother. And he said to him, Teacher, all these I haveobserved from my youth. And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, Youlack one thing; go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasurein heaven; and come, follow me. At that saying his countenance fell, and he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions. And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! And thedisciples were amazed at his words.

The Celebrant continues
Holy and gracious Father: In your in nite love you made us for yourself; and, when wehad fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent JesusChrist, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us,to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross,
and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacri ce for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread;and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said,Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shedfor you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for theremembrance of me.
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:Christ has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacri ce of praise andthanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at
the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in theunity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.
AMEN .
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say ,

A Note on Todays Readings Proper 23, Year B
Welcome to St. Francis Church. In the themes of the Sundays in this part of the year, we face someof the strongest challenges presented by our faith. We have reached the portion of the Gospel of Mark in which Jesus, nearing the nal con ict, is preparing his followers for what lies ahead, not
only for him, but also for them in the remainder of their lives. So todays Gospel is the account of the rich young man who discovers that there is more to salvation than following the Law. Jesuscalls for a complete submission to God, even to the point of giving up everything. Only then can wegain what we really need.
The Old Testament reading from the prophet Amos presents a situation in which those who controlIsrael are so caught up in amassing personal wealth that they ignore the needs of the poor. Thatsocial injustice, God warns, will lead to the destruction of the society.
We are reading through the Epistle to the Hebrews during this period. This letter to early Christians presents Jesus as Savior, as high priest, and as the model for Christian living. In todays passage thewriter tells us that although Gods judgment lays all our failure open to God, we know that Godsresponse is that of the merciful high priest and therefore we may approach God with con dence.
Todays liturgy is lled with challenge and with hope. We are faced with the demands of the Gospeland also with its promise of salvation to those who persevere. We are called to enter into the painfulyet joyful project of God in bringing the kingdom into the lives of all people in our time.
