Dear Parents, What an amazing term it has been for St. Finbar’s School! The calendar has been full of many special events including: School Carols, Year 6 Big Day out, swimming lessons, beach days, School Swimming carnival, Grandparents and Special Friends Day, 2016 Foundation Student’s Orientation days, Basketball Tournaments, Farm excursions, Special Mass celebrations, Year 3 Day camp, St. John’s Ambulance First Aid training for students, Year 5 & 6 Brighton schools cluster day, Year 5 Student Leadership events, Year 6 Graduation, Year 4 Sailing, Year 3 Ten Pin Bowling, Fire Ed Visits for Foundation Students, Staff Planning days for 2016, Year 2 Farm Visit and chickens hatching, Year 4 Parishioner morning tea and Year 1 City excursion to name a few. All of this on top of the regular educational opportunities our students receive on a weekly basis here at school. We certainly have a lot to be thankful for at St. Finbar’s. Congratulations to Nathan in 3Mc who also won a state chess award recently! I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the members of staff who are departing at the end of the year: Mrs. Tammesild who has been a dedicated member and leader of St. Finbar’s staff for the past 16 years. Ms. Karen May who departed from St. Finbar’s school at the end of Term 3 after taking Long Service Leave. Miss Jessica Agganis who is taking up her first teaching position at another school in 2016 and Miss Muireann McGowan who filled in for Mrs. McDonald during Term 4 who has also gained employment at another school in 2016. I wish them all well in their future endeavours. A list of 2016 teaching staff and their roles is listed further in this newsletter. On Wednesday we had our farewell Mass, Assembly and Morning Tea for Mrs. Tammesild. What an incredibly special celebration it was for a very special person. Thanks to all of the people who contributed to making the event so special for her it is greatly appreciated. On Wednesday we also had our ‘Up’ Day for all students who will be attending St. Finbar’s in 2016. This was an excellent opportunity for students to meet their 2016 teacher and classmates. Special thanks to the class teachers of 2015 who spent many hours placing students in next year class groupings. It is an incredibly difficult job with many variables to consider in the best interests of the students involved. I would also like to acknowledge the tireless work of Jenni Mongan ~ President of P & F and Tania Olson ~ Chairperson of School Advisory Board, who have both finished their tenures in their roles. Thank you both on behalf of the school community for the amazing work you have both done for St. Finbar’s school this year. School reports will go out to families tomorrow, Friday 11

We move into the third week of Advent and officially begin our Year of Mercy. This week’s gospel from Luke has a clear message, which is still applicable to our lives today – the need to live as people of generosity and justice. Pope Francis calls us to enter into a Year of Mercy, where we reflect on our relationships – with ourselves, with others and with God. We are challenged to take actions that will make us people of forgiveness, reconciliation and outreach. As we rapidly move towards the end of the 2015 school year it is good to take a moment or two to reflect on the year that has been … looking at the students, it is very easy to see the physical changes in them – they have certainly grown so much this year! However, I have been extremely touched by their spiritual growth – especially in the way they have responded to their prayer nights; class masses; sacramental preparations; school masses and weekly attendance at mass with parishioners.

Swimming Carnival Success
–WHAT A DAY !
It worked – we put our energies & prayers into providing a great weather forecast on the BOM website and..... finally scored a 28deg day sun-filled day! Woohoo! This year our F-2’s carnival took on a re-vamped approach to compliment the two weeks of skills they developed from their Learn to Swim lessons at GESAC this term. It was so wonderful to see all students take to their 25m races with gusto and try their best – well done to all Junior students! The Senior Yr3-6 carnival also took on a different approach with no timing of events & the introduction of some 25m relays – which proved to be a lot of fun! We did miss the majority of our Year 6 girls who all were off at their Orientation for Secondary school, but made up for it, with some fun at the end of the day - a game of water polo and some free time. Congratulations goes to our winning House......... NAGLE! They clearly dominated this year by achieving the most points in the Junior as well as the Senior Carnival!
MANY THANKS goes to all staff that put in 100% on the day to help support our students. We’d also like to say a HUGE thank you to our AMAZING PARENTS & PAST STUDENTS that helped in roles for both our Junior and Senior carnivals – we are very lucky to have such supportive parents & students that are willing to give up their time to allow us run carnivals to this capacity – MUCH APPRECIATED!!!! District Swimming Trials for interested Yr 3-6 students will be held in Week 2 of 2016 : Try-Out notices will go home in the first 2 days of 2016 for any student wishing to try out for our District Team: 2 swimmers will selected to represent the
school for each of the 4 swimming strokes (max of 2 indl events/student). The 2016 District Carnival is set for Thursday 25
th February at Oakleigh Rec Pool.

Carols at Mayflower Each year the parish organises a group of children to sing carols for the residents at Mayflower Nursing Home in the week before Christmas. We usually have 20 to 30 children (this is not a drop-off event), we have a short practice in the church before walking up to Mayflower and singing 7 or 8 carols, the children are then given an icy pole or other afternoon tea. The parents who have organised it for the past few years have older children now, so this year we are hoping someone will come along with us with the prospect of taking over the (very simple) organisation of the event in the future. If you, and perhaps with a friend, are interested please contact the parish office to let us know.
Flower arranging in the church. Own transport is required. On the job training is available. Volunteers will be rostered ON for two weeks, then OFF for a number of weeks depending on how many volunteers we have. If you can assist please call Diane on 9557 6214. Please consider joining with a friend to share the load.

13 December 2015 Rejoice Rejoice is the theme of today’s Mass, shown in the hope-filled bible readings, the sight of the pink candle amid the purple three, and the deeper realisation that all the promises of the prophecies, that began in the third chapter of Genesis, were about to happen. John the Baptist is the person to introduce the “God-Man” Jesus to the Jewish people – a person who has been prepared by God in his desert training, so John’s message is truthful, stark and joy-filled. God wants us to (and we can) join in the joy of God being with us, by listening attentively to the scriptures and being aware of the needs of others. Fr Malcolm Crawford
