Youth ministry and Children’s faith formation
UNDERSTANDING HOMESCHOOL BASED FAITH FORMATION
FOR PRE-K through 5th Grades
The Church teaches that parents are the first and primary educators of their children in the faith. Some parents, in fulfilling this role, will choose to decline the assistance of parish catechetical programs and provide systematic catechesis in their homes. Some families also home-school their children in their academic subjects as well as their catechetical formation, while for others this is a decision limited exclusively to their faith formation.
Parents of children who receive systematic catechesis in their home are strongly encouraged to visit the parish and have a discussion with the parish catechetical leader. Leaders have been provided guidelines about how to proceed with this endeavor. Parents are to be provided a textbook which correlates to the child's age and is the same textbook used in the parish religious education program. Cardinal DiNardo has directed that those books that serve as primary resources for catechetical instruction be among the texts reviewed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Committee to Oversee the use of the Catechism, and found to be in conformity with the Cate-chism of the Catholic Church.
The parish catechetical leader will want to have a conversation with the child(ren) to determine readiness for the ap-propriate grade level. The leader will request parents bring the child in on a regular basis (perhaps monthly, maybe at the end of a textbook unit, etc.) to "check-in" regarding progress and to see if there are any parental needs.
Save the date and check back soon for link to register.
We are still in NEED of Catechists and Aides!!
TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME How o en when asked to do something for another do you respond, “Yes I want to help, but first I have to…” Or, when a er making a resolu on to be more a en ve to your health, you look at the steak and dessert on the menu and say to yourself, “Yes I want to preserve my God-given health, but tomorrow…” Our self-sacrificing ac ons and good inten-
ons are o en easily placed on the back burner. In today’s Gospel Jesus tells the crowd that there are no “buts” or “back burners” when it comes to following
Him. Aware of what lies ahead for Himself, Jesus is impelled to cau on the crowd about the demands of discipleship. The three condi ons that He iden fies in the passage are no stroll on a sunny day.
Using hyperbole Jesus reveals the first condi on of discipleship is that we choose in macy with Him above all others. Our rela onship with Jesus must come first. To really be a disciple then I cannot say “Yes, I choose in macy with You above all others, but…have no me for prayer today.” The second condi on is that we accept the suffering that comes with discipleship; actually embrace our suffering as gi , for giving witness to Jesus and to grow in our in -macy with the Lord. Because the cross calls us into trus ng the deeper mysteries of life and God, to really be a disci-ple means I cannot say “Yes, I want to carry my cross and follow you, but…make sure I get that job today, or else...”
The first two condi ons of discipleship in the Gospel are followed by two brief parables that challenge us to be aware of and to wisely assess our ability to meet the demands of discipleship, and lead us to Jesus’ third condi on. We must be prepared to renounce all of our possessions. Jesus insists that to be His disciple demands a right-ordered disposi on toward all things; one that loves all of life and crea on, and yet recognizes everything as gi from the Holy One. Just like the first two, this third condi on requires self-sacrificing love that puts the Lord above all else in our life. To really be a disciple then I cannot say “Yes, I want to give all that I have to follow the Lord, but…my luxury car is more necessary than my support of those in need.
In your heart are you really a “buts” or “back burner” responder to the Lord’s invita ons to deeper discipleship? Do you no ce that too soon a er a retreat or prayer experience “high” your fire for the Lord fizzles? Maybe you are easily distracted by what gli ers right in front of your eyes. It is me to pray for Divine wisdom and strength to choose in macy with the Lord, to accept is cost, and to hold everything lightly as gi , so that you can respond posi vely and faithfully to Lord Jesus Christ as a true disciple. We need the help—discipleship is no stroll on a sunny day. kathleen⁺AMDG⁺
TAKE IT TO HEART Salvation is free, but discipleship costs everything we have –Billy Graham (1918-2018)
William Franklin Graham, Jr. was an American evangelist, a prominent evangelical Christian figure, and an ordained Southern Baptist minister who became well-known internationally in the late 1940s. He was one of the most influential Christian leaders of the 20th century.

LOST GOSPELS OR FALSE GOSPELS?
A 12 week ADULT BIBLE STUDY beginning September 12th
Every Thursday from 10:00 - 11:30 AM
In Parish Life Center, St. Dominic Room Are the reliable accounts of the life and teachings of
Jesus only to be found in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John?
What about the recent discovery of alternative writ-ings about Jesus bearing the names of such promi-nent early Christians such as Peter, Thomas, Mary Magdalene, Judas and James?
Some of these writings are said to contain “secret” teachings of Jesus filling the gaps of his childhood, and some contradict the New Testament canon. What should informed Christians make of them? How should we view these Lost Gospels and why
were they banned from the Bible?
For the answer to these questions and to understand the diversity of early Christianity, please join us for a Thurs-day morning Adult Bible Study.
HURRY AND SIGN UP!!! For more information call Steph Weber at 713-306-0583 or email her at: [email protected]. You can also contact the parish Faith Formation Office at [email protected] or call 281-778-0400 ext. 109 or 111.
For child care during this class we have GREAT NEWS!!!!!! Child care can be provided for a small
fee by the “Bible Buddies.” Www.stamericigh.com/bible-buddies

PARISH AND COMMUNITY LIFE 2019 Guide Book & Directory
In order to help us all know more about our Church and to have an annually updat-ed Church directory, we have contracted the Guide Book Publishing to produce a “Guide Book & Directory.” The book will be direct mailed to every household in our Church and is being provided at no cost to our church. This Guide Book & Directo-
ry is and shall remain property of this church and is intended for the private use of the members of this congregation only. Use of this book by anyone for a business purpose or for telephone or mail solicitations is strictly forbidden.
If you do not want your phone number and/or your address listed in this publication, please email the Church office at [email protected] by September 27, 2019.
Advertising Opportunity We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the Church. This book will be the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of our Congregation. The book is being provided at no cost to our Church, in-cluding the mailing to each family, and again is being subsidized by local businesses that advertise in it. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Church Office.
Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.
Update Membership Information Does our Church database have YOUR family membership record correct? It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family
over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Do you want your record published?
If you have not already informed the Church Office about changes to your record, please let us know NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 27,2019 so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct.

Imposter priest email/texting scams In recent months, there have been numerous reports in Texas of in-dividuals impersonating a parish priest and soliciting do-nations – normally in the form of gift cards – from mem-bers of their congregation. The Texas Attorney issued a related consumer alert in regards to these scammers. In an effort to minimize the impact of these fraudulent actions, pastors are encouraged to remind their membership that priests/churches would never make such appeals to the parish community. Please ad-vise parishioners to notify the church office immediately if they receive any unfamil-iar donation requests.
IMPORTANT CONTACT INFORMATION In light of the most recent sex abuse scandal, I would urge anyone who has experienced sexual assault or har-assment by ANYONE in the church to come forward.
