Rescue Review
The staff and volunteers of Castaway Animal Rescue Effort know that one of the keys to rescuing more animals from kill shelters is to have a great adoption program. In addition to our two adoption centers, we also have a mobile adoption trailer which we can take to other locations to adopt out our animals. We try to ensure that no opportunity for an adoption is missed!
C.A.R.E. often takes our adop-tion trailer to Petsmart on South Glenstone. Petsmart is a great organization that tries to promote adoption from shelters and rescues through adoption days. They also have occasional “National Adoption Weekends” in which all Petsmarts across the nation invite rescues to
come and adopt out animals at their stores. C.A.R.E. participated in one such weekend during February 14th and 15th of this year.
On the 14th, which was coincidental-ly Valentine’s Day, two cats and one dog were adopted into their forever homes. On the 15th, a Saturday, a total of thirteen C.A.R.E. animals found new families! The C.A.R.E. team was completing adoptions well into the evening that day; leaving Petsmart after the sun had set. The long hours were definitely worth it, with a total of sixteen pets adopted in just two days! This opened up space for even more animals to be rescued from the euthanasia list, getting a second chance at finding a loving family.

The C.A.R.E. MISSION
To rescue as many adoptable animals from “death row” as we can properly care for.
To provide medical treatment to sick or injured stray animals.
To combine an aggressive spay/neuter program with a high volume adoption program while providing quality lifetime care for unadopted pets.
To network with and provide a rescue service for other shelters, ultimately reducing the kill-rate in Southwest Missouri.

Subaru Shares the Love with C.A.R.E.! C.A.R.E. is an organization which relies solely upon donations to operate and rescue unwanted animals. We are not city or state funded, instead we rely on the kindness and dedication of our supporters. One such supporter is Reliable Subaru, located near Chestnut Expressway and Highway 65. Every year Subaru holds a “celebrity spokesdog” contest during November and December, in which they invite dog owners to post a picture of their pet on their website. The dog with the most votes then appears in Subaru advertising for the following year. C.A.R.E. participates in several on-the-lot events at Reliable Sub-aru during the contest. Some of the events included a dog fashion show featuring CARE dogs and the latest fashions from All About Dogs & Cats, the C.A.R.E. mobile adoption trailer with adoptable animals, prize give aways, and pet questions answered by local vet Dr. Reid.
C.A.R.E. in the CommunityTaking a look at some of the generous local
businesses that supported C.A.R.E. this winter!
These events tie into the national Subaru Share the Love Event. For every vehicle sold or leased between Novem-ber 21, 2013 and January 2, 2014, Subaru donated money to the consumer’s choice among five national charity partners and a sixth local charity chosen by individual dealers. C.A.R.E. was chosen by Reliable Subaru. During this time, over $4,400 was raised by Subaru for C.A.R.E.! This amount reflects not only the dedication of Subaru to animals, but also the support of the local residents of Springfield. Thank you to all who chose us, and thank you again to Subaru!

Meet Goober, this super fun fellow will keep you entertained with his playful silliness. This dashing Catahoula Hound mix wants to be loved! He can be bashful of new people at first but soon will warm your heart with his affections. Goober is searching for a person that would like a dog to take hiking, biking or just to play with and love.
He has been waiting for a special family of his own for quite a while. Can you give him a chance to shine?

Oodi is a 6 year old Mountain Cur. He likes to be both indoors and outdoors. Oodi is the sweetest boy, he loves to cuddle! He is well behaved and calm. He was very frightened when he first arrived at our adoption center, but has since come out of his shell and enjoys meeting new people. He is lonely and longs for a family that will love him. He would be so grateful for a home!

Oliver wants to be loved! He has been at our shelter a long time be-cause he doesn’t always make a good first impression. Even though he feels scared of some strangers at first he is an amazingly loyal and affectionate companion once he trusts you. He plays well with most other dogs. He enjoys playing in a fenced yard but would also like to be indoors with his family.
If you have a big heart and want to help a pet that truly needs you, this is your guy!

Chester is his own cat. He is mature and likes quiet petting and soft beds. Although he sneaks in a few games of chase he would rather look out the widow than chase a ball of twine. Chester is the kind of cat that likes to think things through before he takes action so he spends much of his day pondering. He is a king looking for a castle. Chester would do great in a senior home or with any calm loving family. Could this beautiful orange lion be king in your castle?
Updates From Adopters!
Below are facebook messages and photos from past adopters. All of the animals pictured were once on the euthanasia list at Animal Control, but thanks to your support, they have found loving homes instead!

Adopted this sweet girl around a year ago from the C.A.R.E. Shelter. She is cuddly and playful and has her own soft
spot in my heart!-Abby O.
This is Irene. I got her at your Springfield shelter mid December. She was called Sandy at the time but she didn’t know it so I changed it. She is such an amazing dog. So sweet. She was very shy in the shelter but got comfortable almost immediately when I
brought her home”-Alma D.

1. Planning an Easter Egg hunt for your kids or grandchildren? Keep track of where you hide that candy and make sure that your pets do not have access to it until the hunt is over. Chocolate and other sweeteners can be highly toxic to both dogs and cats. Also be aware the Easter lilies can be fatal to pets if ingested.
2. Be mindful of how easy it is for your beloved pet to overheat in the car. On a sunny day a car’s temperature can increase by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, and 40 degrees in just half an hour! This means that a 60 degree day could turn into a 100 degree oven for your dog before you make it out of the store.
3. Love to garden? Be sure to keep your pets out of any fertilizers or pesticides used. These can contain toxic ingredients that can be very harmful to your dog or cat. Also be sure to check online to see if any new additions to your garden are poisonous to your pets.
4. As the temperature outside increases, so does the prevalence of insects and pests. Make sure you take your furry family members to the vet so you can pick up some year-round heartworm medicine, as well as flea and tick protection!
Hopefully these tips will keep you and your pets safe as you enjoy the outdoors!
