American Songbook I Meet the Artists

Singer-songwriter Dawn Landes has been writing songs for most of herlife and already has nearly a decade of experience as a recording artist.Raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Ms. Landes studied psychology and litera-ture at New York University, which she left to begin honing her productionand engineering skills. She cut her teeth at Stratosphere Sound and atPhilip Glass’s personal recording studio before launching Saltlands Studioin Brooklyn with partners Steve Salett and Gary Maurer. To date she hasreleased four critically acclaimed albums: Dawn’s Music (2005), Fireproof(2008), Sweet Heart Rodeo (2010), and Bluebird (2014). Ms. Landes hastoured extensively in the U.S., Europe, and around the world, often shar-ing the stage with artists such as Ray LaMontagne, Bryan Ferry, andAndrew Bird. In the studio she has collaborated with contemporaries suchas Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Norah Jones, and composer Nico Muhly.

Ms. Landes’s new album, Bluebird (Western Vinyl), was produced in col-laboration with Thomas Bartlett, who joins her this evening as musicaldirector. Her songs have been featured in commercials, popular films, andTV shows, including Bored to Death, House, Gossip Girl, and The GoodWife. She composed original scores for two feature films, Showtime’sFamiliar Strangers and Adam Rapp’s Blackbird, and penned the end-creditsong for Savage Grace starring Julianne Moore. In 2012 she released MalHabillée, a collection of original French songs packaged in interactive e-book form with illustrations by the artist Danica Novgorodoff. Ms. Landeshas also appeared with the Boston Pops and New York City Ballet. InJanuary she was featured as a guest singer on the album Road Trip byLondon’s Aurora Orchestra (Sony Classics). Also forthcoming this year,Ms. Landes will be finishing a new musical, a stage adaptation of theadventure memoir A Pearl in the Storm, commissioned by New York’sPublic Theater.

Thomas Bartlett

Thomas Bartlett (musical director and piano), aka Doveman, is a producer andsongwriter best known for his work with The Gloaming, Glen Hansard, TheNational, Antony and the Johnsons, and Nico Muhly.

Kyle Sanna

Guitarist and composer Kyle Sanna (guitar) has collaborated and performedwith artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile, Mark Gould, andTheodosii Spassov, with some of the greatest living interpreters of Irish music(Kevin Burke, Martin Hayes, and Dennis Cahill), and with many veterans ofNew York’s experimental scene. He has performed his original music through-out North America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. Mr. Sanna studiedjazz at the University of Oregon and composition at the Université LumièreLyon 2 in France. He lives in Brooklyn and is a member of Uri Sharlin and theDogCat Ensemble, Marika Hughes & Bottom Heavy, Compagnia de’Colombari, the Kinan Azmeh Quartet, We the Gleaners, and a duo with violin-ist Dana Lyn.

Tony Scherr

Tony Scherr (bass) plays bass with Bill Frisell and Sex Mob. He has also playedguitar and/or bass with many other artists, including John Lurie and theLounge Lizards, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, Rickie Lee Jones, Dakota Staton,Feist, and Aaron Neville with Keith Richards. Mr. Scherr can usually be foundlocally on Mondays at Rockwood Music Hall with his trio featuring drummerAnton Fier and Rob Jost on bass.

Ray Rizzo

Ray Rizzo (drums) is a drummer, writer, actor, and producer. He is a memberof the bands Mesiko and Corporal, and has recorded with Yo-Yo Ma, GlenHansard, Days of the New, Trixie Whitley, Frogbelly and Symphony, DawnLandes, James Rago, Little Silver, and Julia Stone. Theater credits includeTwelfth Night (New York Shakespeare Festival), Balm in Gilead (LakeLucille/Beau Willimon production), and Essential Self-Defense (PlaywrightsHorizons), for which Mr. Rizzo received a 2007 Drama Desk nomination forBest Music in a Play. He is the founder of Motherlodge Live Arts Exchange.

Annie Nero

Annie Nero (vocals) has accompanied many musicians in all types of bandsaround New York City since the early 2000s. An accomplished bassist and

singer, she has been a member of the Bandana Splits, Yellowbirds, andMesiko, to name just a few, and also heads her own project, A Nero, withmusician Josh Kaufman. Ms. Nero also works in the public-radio world, aidingin the quest to make science programming fun, accessible, and free for sci-ence enthusiasts everywhere.

Justin Kantor

Justin Kantor (cello) is a co-founder of Le Poisson Rouge (LPR), a multimediaperformance space, art gallery, and cabaret in New York City’s GreenwichVillage. LPR has hosted artists such as the Kronos Quartet, Lou Reed, Yo-YoMa, Florence & the Machine, Norah Jones, the Juilliard String Quartet, andothers. In addition to being an active partner in LPR, Mr. Kantor is a cellist whohas performed with the Wordless Music Orchestra, the Glenn BrancaEnsemble, Karen O, and Ensemble LPR.

Christiana Liberis

Born in Italy of Italian, Greek, and Polish heritage, violinist/violist ChristianaLiberis (violin) performs diverse musical genres, from classical to tango, jazz,Broadway, electric improvisation, and other eclectic styles. Popular artists shehas performed on tours or shared the stage with recently include Jay Z, TheRoots, John Legend, Common, Beyoncé, Alicia Keyes, Josh Groban, NatalieMerchant, James Franco, Il Divo, Pink Martini, Deep Purple, Jeff Beck,Michael Bublé, and Alicia Keyes. Ms. Liberis has also performed at major con-cert venues like Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, Joe’sPub, and Radio City Music Hall; in radio and television broadcasts includingSaturday Night Live and the Late Show with David Letterman, as well as onfilm soundtracks. She has recorded for artists including Ricky Martin, Shakira,and Gil Scott-Heron. Based in New York City, Ms. Liberis tours regularly on aninternational circuit. Her debut solo CD will be released this year.

Marc Szammer

Marc Szammer (violin) has performed as a soloist and in chamber musicrecitals across Europe and North America. As a New York–based freelancer, heconcertizes and records with numerous ensembles and independent artists.He performs regularly at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, as well as venuessuch as Blue Note and Le Poisson Rouge. Mr. Szammer has appeared with popartists such as Shakira, Gloria Estefan, Patti LaBelle, Carlos Santana, JohnLegend, the Miami Sound Machine, Amy Grant, Andrew Wyatt, members ofSigur Rós, and Olivia Newton-John. Born in Quebec, Canada, Mr. Szammerbegan his musical studies at age five. He continued his musical training at theMannes College of Music, receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees as astudent of Sally Thomas. A dedicated teacher, he is also a certified ski instruc-tor and enjoys teaching both skiing and music to students of all ages.

Yuiko Kamakari

Yuiko Kamakari’s (viola) graduated from the Tokyo National University of FineArts and Music and holds a master’s degree from the Manhattan School ofMusic. She has been studying violin since she was three years old. Ms.Kamakari held the violin/keyboard chair in the Tony Award–winning Broadwaymusical Next to Normal and performed in Karen O’s opera Stop the Virgens.She has subbed for a number of other musicals, including Spiderman: Turn Offthe Dark, The Addams Family, Cinderella, and Kinky Boots. She was also theconcertmaster for the American premiere of Man and Boy: Dada, an opera byMichael Nyman. On television and DVD, she has performed with AliceColtrane, Beyoncé, Fergie, will.i.am, Mary J. Blige, Tricia Yearwood, ArturoSandoval, Scott Weiland, Il Divo, Mick Jagger, Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), andPaul Banks (Interpol), as well as numerous orchestral and chamber musicensembles. Ms. Kamakari is also featured on recordings with Soul Cycle,Charlie Haden, Nick Zinner, and many others.

American Songbook

In 1998, Lincoln Center launched American Songbook, dedicated to the cele-bration of popular American song. Designed to highlight and affirm the cre-ative mastery of America’s songwriters from their emergence at the turn ofthe 19th century up through the present, American Songbook spans all stylesand genres, from the form’s early roots in Tin Pan Alley and Broadway to theeclecticism of today’s singer-songwriters. American Songbook also show-cases the outstanding interpreters of popular song, including established andemerging concert, cabaret, theater, and songwriter performers.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Inc.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA) serves three primary roles: pre-senter of artistic programming, national leader in arts and education and com-munity relations, and manager of the Lincoln Center campus. A presenter of more than 3,000 free and ticketed events, performances, tours, and edu-cational activities annually, LCPA offers 15 programs, series, and festivalsincluding American Songbook, Great Performers, Lincoln Center Festival,Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Midsummer Night Swing, the Mostly MozartFestival, and the White Light Festival, as well as the Emmy Award–winningLive From Lincoln Center, which airs nationally on PBS. Matt Berman

Matt Berman is the resident lighting designer for Lincoln Center’s AmericanSongbook. He continues his design work for Kristin Chenoweth, Liza Minnelli,Kaye Ballard, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Lea Salonga, and Elaine Paige on the road.Through his work with the American Society of Composers, Authors andPublishers (ASCAP) and several U.S.-based charities, Mr. Berman has designedfor a starry roster that includes Bernadette Peters, Barbra Streisand, RebaMcEntire, Melissa Errico, Deborah Voigt, Michael Urie, Stevie Wonder, IndiaArie, Garth Brooks, Billy Joel, and Sting. His international touring schedule hasallowed him to design for iconic venues such as Royal Albert Hall, the ParisOpera, the Olympia Theater in Paris, Royal Carré Theater in Amsterdam, theSporting Club in Monte Carlo, the Acropolis, the Taormina Amphitheater inSicily, Luna Park in Buenos Aires, the Sydney Opera House, and, closer tohome, the Hollywood Bowl, Alice Tully Hall, and Carnegie Hall. Mr. Berman’stelevision work includes Chenoweth’s recently released special Coming Home,as well as seven Live From Lincoln Center broadcasts and the TonyAward–winning Liza’s at the Palace, which he also designed for Broadway.Other Broadway credits include Bea Arthur on Broadway, Nancy LaMott’s Justin Time for Christmas, and Kathy Griffin Wants a Tony at the Belasco Theater.

Scott Stauffer

Scott Stauffer has been the sound designer for Lincoln Center’s AmericanSongbook (1999–2015); the Actors Fund concerts of Frank Loesser, Broadway101, Hair, and On the Twentieth Century; and Brian Stokes Mitchell at Carnegie

Hall. His Broadway credits include A Free Man of Color, The Rivals, Contact(also in London and Tokyo), Marie Christine, Twelfth Night, and Jekyll & Hyde.Off-Broadway Mr. Stauffer has worked on Hereafter, A Minister’s Wife,Bernarda Alba, Third, Belle Epoque, Big Bill, Elegies, Hello Again, The SpitfireGrill, Pageant, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. His regional credits include pro-ductions at the Hanger Theatre, Berkshire Theatre Festival, ChicagoShakespeare Theater, and Alley Theatre. As a sound engineer, Mr. Stauffer hasworked on The Lion King, Juan Darién, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Carousel,Once on This Island, and Little Shop of Horrors (Off-Broadway).

sesses a unique gift of conceptualizing projects thatfuse the jazz idiom with his extensive knowledge ofpercussion and Latin rhythms. Along with his bandthe Jass Syncopators and special guests trumpeterand Dizzy Gillespie protégé Jon Faddis and singer, cel-list, and banjo player Leyla McCalla, Villafranca willpresent Cinqué- Suite of the Caribbean, a debut workfocusing on the influences of the Congolese traditionsof rhythms, melodies, and dances through the musicof Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Haiti, Jamaica, andCuba. The prodigious Diehl, who has re-imagined the music of masters like New Orleans’ ownJelly Roll Morton, serves as Music Director. DownBeatcalls Suggs, “A commanding singer... steeped in tradi-tion... but with modern sensibilities." The WashingtonPost describes Thelonious Monk International VocalCompetition finalist Aimée as possessing “a voice likefine whiskey – oaky and smooth, with a hint of smoki-ness.” The evening continues with The New OrleansJazz Orchestra’s premiere of founding Artistic DirectorIrvin Mayfield’s “New Orleans Jazz Market,” a compo-sition celebrating the orchestra’s soon-to-be-built per-manent home of the same name.
