WELCOME
Dear Colleagues,SPIN for Success is the theme of AWCI’s Convention & Intex Expo 2014—a convention that promises to deliver the best in education sessions, networking and, of course, the Intex Expo. What does this mean for you?
S – Socialize at all the available networking events. Networking is the #1 reason most registrants give for attending the convention. That’s because networking enables you to solve your challenges with peers who understand the complexities of the wall and ceiling industry.
P – Participate in all the convention has to offer—education sessions, committee meetings, fundraisers, receptions—to get the biggest bang for your buck.
I – Impress your peers and the competition when you return from AWCI’s Convention with new ideas and plans for making your company even more successful.
N – Navigate your way through hundreds of Intex Expo booths full of exhibitors ready to wow you with the latest wall and ceiling industry products and services.
We know you’ll walk away with at least one great idea that will more than pay for your investment of time and money to attend.
Based on positive feedback from last year’s convention we are again offering a discounted registration for contractors under age 35, and a mobile app.
AWCI’s 2014 annual convention will be the best convention yet. A special prize drawing will be held on the last day of the trade show. Will you be the lucky winner?
I urge you to read through the information, reserve your hotel room and register early for what promises to be an outstanding event.

How to Avoid Confrontation with Change Orders and Scope CreepEthan E. Cowles, FMI CorporationLet’s face it, change orders are a way of life in construction and unfortunately, so is the conflict that seems to be inherent with trying to convince your customer of the added cost that results from a change in project scope. However, there are ways to avoid that confrontation and still be paid for the additional work that you have done. During this session you will accomplish the following:
• Master the art of dealing with delays, accelerations, addition, deletions and other changes.
• Learn to recognize a change, and get paid for it.• Understand how to document and determine the amount of a change
order, and how to communicate changes and their costs to clients and personnel.
• Examine change costs, contract terms and overhead, and the impact they have on scheduling and retention.
Ethan Cowles is a senior consultant with FMI, management consultants and investment bankers for the construction industry. Cowles has worked with both general and self-performing contractors helping them to develop a strong understanding of the financial risks and rewards inherent to operational issues. Prior to joining FMI, Cowles spent more than 14 years working his way up the construction ranks and held jobs as a carpenter, superintendent and project manager. As a prior service United States Marine, Cowles gained heavy equipment operations experience and is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Cloud, Mobile, Social and Other Innovative Ways Smart Wall and Ceiling Contractors Will Grow in a Slow EconomyStill working in the old world? Afraid of losing the competitive edge? Isn’t it time to get up to speed?
Winning companies have learned to do more with less, and it’s because of technology. The managers of today are looking to capitalize on the trends of tomorrow. Smart business people know this.
So what technology trends will impact your business in 2014? And for the next five years after that? What should you be doing now to profit in the future?

Everything You Always Wanted to Know about EQ Studs (But Were Afraid to Ask)Although EQ studs are now being widely used in commercial construction today, there are still many questions that designers, contactors and inspectors have about their proper use. This session tackles these questions head-on, starting with the topics that AWCI and SFIA members asked about in a recent poll, including these:
• How do you build fire-rated walls with EQ studs?• What special installation requirements are there for composite and
non-composite walls?• How do you verify the EQ studs meet the requirements in the gypsum
board manufacturer’s installation manual?• What is the proper installation methods for EQ studs at jambs and
headers?A panel of experts, including contractors, technical experts and representatives of the major manufacturers, will field these questions— and more.

Continuous Insulation: Construction Projects Are Heating UpThis session will explore the hot topic of continuous insulation. What’s driving the trend? What materials and installation procedures do you need to follow? What role can a building manufacturer play in the success of a construction project? Should you use mineral wool, rigid foam, or can you use spray-in insulation? All these questions and more will be discussed from a contractor’s perspective. Facilitated by a recognized industry expert, this round-table discussion will be chaired by experienced professionals.
Robert Grupe spent more than 38 years with United States Gypsum Company where he held various technical and management positions. He currently is a consultant to the construction community where he has worked on several large scale international construction projects.
Richard Huntley, president of WeKanDo Construction in Puerto Rico, is a fourth generation contractor. Huntley has been involved as a project manager and supervisor in the growth and expansion of his company from being only a plastering company to a company that specializes in spray-on fireproofing, exterior metal framing, EIFS, metal lath and plaster, and specialty wall and finish systems.
Mikel Poellinger, a past president of AWCI and the Foundation of the Wall and Ceiling Industry, is president and owner of Poellinger, Inc. in Wisconsin. Since 1957, Poellinger, Inc. has been a commercial and residential contractor in the upper Midwest and beyond.

Attracting Young People into Construction Field PositionsToday’s youths are the future and the future of the wall and ceiling industry. Ranging in age from 10 to 35, they comprise about 80 million people. As they seek to enter the workforce, will they consider work in construction field positions? Do young people know what wall and ceiling construction has to offer? What should be the industry’s pitch? And, how will boomers and millennials need to compromise their ideologies for training, mentoring and transitions to occur?

Exterior Envelope—Doing It Right®
The 2012 International Energy Conservation Code® promises to offer challenges to anyone in the construction industry who designs and installs exterior wall assemblies. The code has new stringent requirements for thermal resistance as well as new thresholds of performance on water and air tightness. Today’s architects need to know how to design to meet the IECC requirements. They must also provide solutions where details aren’t always available and the requirements are constantly changing. This forces contractors to struggle with constructing exterior assemblies with cladding over multiple inches of continuous insulation and highly complex air and water barriers.
This course is aimed at contractors and architects who want to expand their knowledge about the IECC’s exterior thermal envelope requirement for exterior wall assemblies when combined with ASTM and ASHRAE construction standards.
Robert Grupe spent more than 38 years with United States Gypsum Company where he held various technical and management positions. Activities included product and system design and technical consultation to the AEC community. He currently is a consultant to the construction community where he has worked on several large scale international construction projects. He has authored numerous articles and given presentations on fire, sound and environmental issues as they relate to wall and ceiling assemblies.
Gypsum—Doing It Right®
This seminar is based on industry standards and best practices for the installation of gypsum board systems. Developed under the guidance of an expert oversight group made up of contractors and manufacturers, a few of the topics covered include codes and standards, design issues, types of gypsum systems, red flags and solutions, finish systems and project management/quality control.
Jason Fell formed Jason W. Fell, Inc. in 2009 and is currently serving the wall and ceiling industry as a drywall consultant. He is an active member of ICBO, ASTM, CSI and AIA and holds three ACIA certifications: construction inspector, project manager
and construction consultant. He is also a department of education credentialed drywall instructor as certified by the state of California.

Developed under the guidance of an expert oversight group made up of contractors and manufacturers, some of the topics covered include codes and standards, substrates, design considerations, materials, weather concerns and limitations of material/stress control/cracking.
In 2002, after 40 years successful experience as a plaster and drywall subcontractor, Mike Boyd formed Boyd Consulting Group. His company serves architects, building owners, developers, property managers, general contractors, exterior wall subcontractors, attorneys, insurance companies, realtors and homeowners. He is a Certified EIFS Inspector as certified by AWCI, the Exterior Design Institute and the Moisture Warranty Corporation.
