2. PATTERNS

3. PRODUCT DESIGN
a. Product Description: The design and shape of the helmets are to be strictly in accordance with that of the Standard Pattern. The helmets are to be supplied complete with turret, spike, front plate, rosettes and chin strap.

5.1 Design and assembly of all items
• The design, assembly, textures and shades of all items are to be strictly in accordance with that of the guiding standard pattern, except those caused through the effects of natural wear and tear and ageing
5.2 Nickel Plating • Items to have a bright finish are to have a 1.25 µm thick nickel plated base coat
5.3 Silver Plating • All items that have an electroplated coating of silver or silver alloy are to conform to BS 4290 – Cu/Ag 10
5.4 Gold Plating • All items that have an electroplated coating of gold or gold alloy are to conform to BS 4292 Part 2 Cu/Au (91.7) 5
5.3 Material thickness
• The thickness of the material used is to be as defined in the data sheets

6.1 Visual requirements of finished items
• The items are to be compared against the appropriate Standard Pattern for mechanical imperfections and any streakiness or unequal colouring
• They are to be viewed, under no magnification, at a distance of between 30cm to 40cm in daylight or in a daylight colour-matching booth

4. PACKAGING AND LABELLING
a. Packaging and package labelling shall be as detailed in the contract conditions. b. Items shall be packaged in a way to prevent damage during transit and storage. c. All items are to be first wrapped in acid free tissue paper and then individually
wrapped and sealed in a clear polythene bag. d. Helmets are to have a printed self adhesive label (see Table 7) attached to the inside
of the helmet clearly visible through the head lining. Labels are to clearly show: Item Description, NSN, Contract Number, Size, year of manufacture and broad arrow
e. Under no circumstances should the contractor’s name, logo or trademark appear on the items or packaging.

PRODUCT CONSTRUCTION
Shell • The helmet shell is to be made in two parts joined by securely hard soldering at the centre-back and front. The join shall not be visible when the back beading, front plate and spike are attached
• The construction of the shell includes the insertion of holes for the attachment of the various components as per the appropriate standard pattern
• The shape is to be a good match to the Standard Pattern and graded to fit relavent sized liner
Peak • The peak is to be attached at the brow of the helmet using six smoothly finished 3mm diameter brass rivets, positioned as on the standard pattern. Neither the joint or rivets shall be visible once the front plate and side leaves are attached
• The peak when measured from the inside edge of the shell to the edge at the centre of the peak is to be 57mm deep
Back beading • See NATO Stock No. 8415-99-975-4486 for construction details • The back beading is to be secured through the back join by an M3 brass nut
with ø15mm washer and a pair of fixing prongs. The fixing prongs should not be folded over until the liner is in place
• The stud is to be parted off flush to the top of the nut
Side Leaves • Design is to be as the Standard Pattern • The side leaves shall be secured at the side of the helmet so as not to be
visible when rosettes are in place using a ø2mm brass rivet, this shall be smoothly finished

Edge beading • !4mm wide gilding metal strip folded in half longditudinally to 6.5mm wide • The edge beading is to be smooth and without folds or creases and is to be
securely hard soldered along the edge of the helmet shell with the joins in line with the rosette sockets so as to not be visible when the chin strap is attached
• At the rear of the helmet the edge beading is to be smoothly fitted over the back beading
• The beading shall be secured at the joins using a ø2mm brass rivet, this shall be smoothly finished
Spike • See NATO Stock No. 8465-99-188-5583 for construction details • The spike assembly shall be positioned such that the longer points of the base
star are oriented to face the front and back of the helmet as on the Standard Pattern
• The base shall be securely attached to the shell by four M3 brass nuts with ø15mm washers and is to be secured by the ventilation plate on the inside of the helmet.
• The studs are to be parted off flush to the top of the nuts
Front Plate • See NATO Stock No. 8415-99-975-4381 for construction details • The front plate is to be positioned in accordance with the Standard Pattern • It is to be secured to the shell by three M3 brass nuts and ø15mm washers and
four pairs of fixing prongs. The upper central prong should not be folded over until the liner is in place
• The studs are to be parted off flush to the top of the nuts • The edges of the front plate shall be a good fit to the helmet shell and any gaps
no greater than 0.5mm. The front plate shall be secure and free of movement

• The liner shall be fitted into the shell with the seam to the rear and the base of the liner level with the base of the helmet at the side.
• The headband shall be secured front and rear using the central prongs which shall pass through the leather headband and folded over flat
• The liner must not be visible below the edge of the helmet
Socket Rosette • See NATO Stock No. 8455-99-135-7912 for construction details • The sockets shall be securely attached to the sides of the helmet through the
sides of the leather headband using two ø3mm brass rivets and washers. The rivets shall be smoothly finished
Rosette • See NATO Stock No. 8415-99-975-4488 for construction details • The helmet shall be supplied complete with two rosettes • The rosettes shall be screwed into place with a piece of card between the
rosette and helmet to ensure that no scratching occurs during transit and storage

PRODUCT CONSTRUCTION
Headband • The band is to be formed by a 75mm wide length of leather. The band is to be shaped to fit the shell and is to be securely joined at the centre back, with the ends abutted and sewn using seam type 4.01.01 of BS 3870
Restraining straps
• Restraining straps are to be inserted formed by three strips of leather securely sewn to the bottom edge of the headband
• The back strap, 210mm long, 32mm wide, is to be positioned centrally at the back. Two slits, 45mm long, 10mm in from end and sides are to be inserted at the free end. The slits are to finish with 2mm diameter holes
• The left strap, to finish 120mm long, 25mm wide, is to be positioned centrally at the side. The end of the strap is to be turned back 20mm and be securely sewn enclosing the buckle
• The right strap, 270mm long, 25mm wide, with the free end pointed, is to be positioned centrally at the side. Ten pairs of holes are to be punched centrally in the strap, the first at 60mm from the pointed end then spaced 12mm apart, centre to centre
Padding • 6mm thick single ply polyester mesh with sewn tape seams, held between the leather headband and the leather head lining.
Head lining • The lining is to be cut in two pieces and joined at the sides, shaped to fit the head leather, attached using seam type 4.01.01 of BS 3870
• Each lining is to be cut to the shape of that on the appropriate standard pattern, with four extended tongues, each of which are to have an eyelet inserted at the free end
• The holes, punched for receiving eyelets, are not to exceed the diameter of the eyelet being inserted
• A 65cm long draw cord shall be threaded through the eyelets and loosly tied off at the end

Brachering • The padding and head lining shall be securely brachered to the leather headband as in the standard pattern

PRODUCT CONSTRUCTION
Shell • The helmet shell is to be made in two parts joined by securely hard soldering at the centre-back and front. The join shall not be visible when the back beading, front plate and spike are attached
• The construction of the shell includes the insertion of holes for the attachment of the various components as per the appropriate standard pattern
• The shape is to be a good match to the Standard Pattern and graded to fit relavent sized liner
Peak • The peak is to be attached at the brow of the helmet using six smoothly finished 3mm diameter brass rivets, positioned as on the standard pattern. Neither the joint or rivets shall be visible once the front plate and side leaves are attached
• The peak when measured from the inside edge of the shell to the edge at the centre of the peak is to be 57mm deep
Back Beading • See NATO Stock No. 8415-99-978-6496 for construction details • The back beading is to be secured through the back join by an M3 brass nut
with ø15mm washer and a pair of fixing prongs. The fixing prongs should not be folded over until the liner is in place
• The stud is to be parted off flush to the top of the nut

Edge Beading • 14mm wide gilding metal strip folded in half longditudinally to 6.5mm wide • The edge beading is to be smooth and without folds or creases and is to be
securely hard soldered along the edge of the helmet shell with the joins in line with the rosette sockets so as to not be visible when the chin strap is attached
• At the rear of the helmet the edge beading is to be smoothly fitted over the back beading
• The beading shall be secured at the joins using a ø2mm brass rivet, this shall be smoothly finished

star are oriented to face the front and back of the helmet as on the Standard Pattern

Front Plate • See NATO Stock No. 8415-99-975-4451 for construction details • The front plate is to be positioned in accordance with the Standard Pattern • It is to be secured to the shell by three M3 brass nuts and ø15mm washers and
four pairs of fixing prongs. The central prongs should not be folded over until the liner is in place
• The studs are to be parted off flush to the top of the nuts • The edges of the front plate shall be a good fit to the helmet shell and any gaps
no greater than 0.5mm. The front plate shall be secure and free of movement

• The liner shall be fitted into the shell with the seam to the rear and the base of the liner level with the base of the helmet at the side.
