On June 4th, 64 registered walkers took time out of their busy schedules to participate in the KHAIR Program’s third annual Walk for KHAIR. Ten teams raised more than $3,000 to help support the program. Walkers were encouraged to participate in a variety of other health and fitness activities, such as tennis cardio and yoga. After the walk, participants had the chance to enter a raffle that offered some amazing prizes such as a 4-Burner Gas Grill and tickets to local amusement parks. For the first time, music was provided by local radio station WYBC FM.

KHAIR Takes on a New StructureIn 2016, the Community Health Network of Connecticut Foundation, Inc., restructured the KHAIR Program to serve its participants and community partners better. For 10 years, the KHAIR Program has consistently provided exceptional care for the emotional health of young people in our communities. While it’s important to support young people’s emotional well-being, it’s equally important to educate and prepare them for the future. That’s why our new curriculum has an increased focus on life skills that will help KHAIR participants from our Classic and Wilbur Cross High School programs achieve great success.
Ta’Nina Gatison, a 2016 Fall Season Wilbur Cross High School KHAIR graduate, is an example of how KHAIR impacts the lives of teenagers through the services we provide.
“I struggled with earning a spot in the workforce at job interviews. These workshops made me aware of what I was doing wrong, because I previously believed I was doing everything right.” Ta’Nina said that she integrated as much information from the workshops as she could, making it a habit to sit up straight, give a firm handshake, and maintain eye contact.
“All of this helped me get a job, and I just want to say how grateful I am for the help.”
Ta’Nina is just one of the many success stories we have. Her story is why we believed KHAIR had to be restructured to prepare participants for their futures. We continue to focus on the importance of grooming and how it relates to success, and continue to provide exceptional care for the emotional health of young people. By focusing on life skills, we work together with community partners to improve the KHAIR program and help produce better outcomes in the lives of young people.
What is KHAIR? The name KHAIR now stands for Kids Healthy Attitude Inspire Reflect
We believe: Kids are Healthy when they have a positive Attitude and are Inspired to Reflect on their unique qualities.

From October 17 – November 21, Cooking Matters hosted a class at Wilbur Cross High School sponsored by Special Olympics Connecticut that included students who are Special Olympics Connecticut athletes. Ten teens participated in the early Monday morning program with Cooking Matters instructor Gina Marie Vecchitto. Most of the students were on a non-verbal spectrum and started off a little reserved and quiet the first few classes. As the sessions progressed, every student became more and more comfortable with both Gina Marie and the student volunteers.
Throughout the 6-week course the teens actively and enthusiastically engaged in preparing different kinds of recipes from the chopping, measuring, stirring, and completing all of the necessary tasks to enjoy the final meal which consisted of veggie pizzas on English muffins, mozzarella sticks, tomato sauce, and black bean brownies. By graduation day, every student was speaking and engaging more and expressed looking forward to the next class session. Instructor Gina Marie said, “This was an amazing group of teens and I can’t wait to work with them again!”
Special Olympics Connecticut provides year-round sports training and competitions to over 13,000 athletes (individuals with intellectual disabilities) and Unified Sports® partners (individuals without intellectual disabilities are the athletes’ teammates).
However, it is about so much more than just sports. It is a movement that transforms lives by inspiring inclusion, understanding and respect for people of all abilities, both on the playing field and in communities across the state.
Special Olympics Connecticut also promotes a healthy lifestyle by offering free health screenings at events, and providing participants with the education and resources to improve their sports performance and enhance their overall health and fitness.

In 2016, A Modern Tea celebrated its 10th anniversary at the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale with the theme, “The Heart of the Matter.” This annual event was designed to educate guests on the importance of staying healthy and informed of the best healthcare practices. Mayor Toni Harp of New Haven and Yale University First Lady Marta Elisa Moret, MPH served as honorary co-chairs. Anees Chagpar, Director of the Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven Hospital and an associate professor of surgery at Yale, served as the keynote speaker. Our mistress of ceremonies was Amanda Raus of FOX 61.
Health exhibitors provided our guests with important health information and free on-site health assessments. Guests attended healthy living workshops presented by our invited speakers. The workshops included:
A Modern Tea began in 2006 as a heart-health event for women. It turned into a spectacular annual affair promoting health and wellness throughout Connecticut. While A Modern Tea grew in size and scope over the years, the Foundation was required to downsize.
Your support has helped us keep our mission in motion: to advance, support and promote programs and activities that fundamentally improve the health status of the people of Connecticut. The Foundation is both proud and grateful to have been able to contribute to the health and well-being of the Greater New Haven area for the last 10 years through A Modern Tea. Thank you again for your continued support and for being a faithful partner to the A Modern Tea event.
The Foundation will continue to raise funds to support our important and beneficial programs, KHAIR and Cooking Matters of Connecticut.
