SAB/SAR Index. 1935 - 1985 SIEGFRIED MEWS, Compiler
The present Index continues a tradition that was begun by the SAB's
founding fathers but not adhered to during the entire fifty years of our
journal's existence; hence the necessity of bringing the record up to date. Indices for the following volumes were published previously:
Volumes 1-5 (May 1935 - Feb. 1940), 6-10 (April 1940 - Feb.
1945), 11-15 (April 1945 - March 1950), 16-20 (April 1945 - March 1950), 16-20 (May 1950 - March 1955), 21-25 (May 1955 - May 1960), 26-30 (May 1960 - Nov. 1965), 31-34 (Jan. 1966 - Nov. 1969).
These indices - back copies of the first of which were available for ten cents each-are fairly inclusive, that is, they list abstracts (which were then published in the SAB), articles, and news notes concerning re- search or academics. Only "notices and small items of ephemeral interest," as the first Index for volumes 1-5 puts it, were not entered.
The present Index does not seek to duplicate information published before; rather, for the period from 1935 through 1969 it endeavors to
provide a selective account that concentrates on scholarly contributions and those addressing broader professional concerns. Owing to the fact that genuinely scholarly articles become more conspicuous in the pages of the journal during the sixties and particularly after 1970, the year in which the new format of the SAB was adopted, the Index tends to be far more inclusive for the last twenty-five years or so than for the preceding period. Generally speaking, only such categories as business meeting minutes, financial and other reports, listings of dissertations and theses as well as book reviews have been excluded.
The present Index goes beyond its predecessors by providing entries
by both author (followed by title) and subject. The Author/Title Index as well as the Subject Index refer the reader to volume, issue, year, and
pages of any given article; the subject index has been arranged accord-
ing to broad categories that correspond approximately to those in the

MLA International Bibliography. The completion of this Index would not have been possible without
the contributions of the following persons: Peter Batke, who devised the
original PC program; Margaret Mills Harper, who entered the items and assisted editorially; Steven E Lamb, who transferred files and kept the PC in working order. They all deserve thanks.
The financial assistance granted for the preparation of the Index by the University Research Council of the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill is hereby gratefully acknowleged.
